Hello, I am an associate professor and chair of the WVU HRE Counseling Department. I am also a faculty member in the Rehabilitation Counselor Education Program. In my opinion, there is no better job than as a rehabilitation counselor if you like variety and being independent in your work!
I graduated from the doctoral program in counseling at The George Washington University and hold a Master of Science in rehabilitation counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. I also have been on the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University and Montana State University.
My current research interests lie in integrative health care and how the rehabilitation counseling field fits. I am undertaking training in complementary and alternative health care practices, energy medicine and nutrition, in an effort to expand my knowledge of how these might better serve people with disabilities, in particular those with a substance use disorder. It has turned into an exciting venture and I have started publishing on the topics.
I have served as a founding member and president of the West Virginia Council on Problem Gambling. I am also a past president of the National Council on Rehabilitation Education.
My job includes directing various grant-funded programs. I am the director of the Long Term Training Program (RSA Scholars) funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Rehabilitation Services Administration. We have two, one for rehabilitation counselors currently employed in the state – federal vocational rehabilitation system who must upgrade their credentials. The other is for people who have a goal to become a rehabilitation counselor in one of the state agencies upon graduation.
The best part of my biography is that I have worked as a rehabilitation counselor and provided training for the field for 30 years. I directed a Resource Center on Substance Abuse Prevention and Disability as well as a national training project targeting rehabilitation professionals. I have also been employed as a rehabilitation counselor and administrator for the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services and as coordinator of Homeless Services for the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board’s Alcohol and Drug Services.
