Scratching Deep into Pet Allergies

I can always tell the owner of the incessantly scratching pet as they wait in my reception area. I don’t even have to see their pet. The signs are unmistakable…the haggard look, the bags under their eyes, the tinge of irritability from lack of sleep and their furrowed brow from worrying about their dog or cat.
Itching, biting, scratching, chewing and just plain futzing with themselves can drive a pet and their owner crazy. What are some of the most common causes of these skin issues and what can a pet parent do? My guest is a board certified veterinary dermatologist, Dr. Ursula Thomas. Dr. Thomas is also a veterinary service manager, for Ceva Animal Health.

Dr. Ursula Thomas is an Austrian native who graduated from the Veterinary School of Vienna, Austria. After completing a doctoral thesis at the Veterinary School of Vienna’s Dermatology Service in 2008, Dr. Thomas then moved to the United States of America to start a three-year residency program in clinical and investigative veterinary dermatology at North Carolina State University. Dr. Thomas became board certified with the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Dermatology in 2011. Since then she has worked as faculty at the University of Florida’s Dermatology Service, and as veterinary dermatologist at an emergency clinic in Southern Massachusetts, as well as veterinary dermatologist for the MSPCA at their clinic near Boston. After more than eight years of clinical experience as a veterinarian, Dr. Thomas joined Ceva in January 2015 as part of the Companion Animal Veterinary Services team. Dr. Thomas’ special interests include: skin allergies, bacterial and fungal skin infections, ear diseases, metabolic and endocrine diseases, as well as auto-immune skin diseases and illnesses that lead to hair loss.
