Did You Know…Horses 101

Dr. Claudia Sonder on Pet Life Radio ........

..Dr. Claudia Sonder............................

.....................................

They may not be the most popular pet in the United States, numbering 4,856,000 in 2014.  They may not fit in our lap but they have a special place in the American heart. Horses have a mystique not matched by any other animal.  Man started harnessing the power and grace of horses around 4000 B.C.  They have been used for their speed, strength, have been beasts of burden and are hands down fabulous athletes. Caring for them requires a knowledgeable owner teaming with a dedicated veterinarian like my guest Dr. Claudia Sonder, Director of the Center for Equine Health at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Claudia Sonder, DVM, a 1995 graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, has been appointed assistant director of the Center for Equine Health . Working with Director Gregory Ferraro, she is responsible for day-to-day management of the facilities, fund-raising for endowments, research development and related duties. Sonder adds her expertise and experience to the intramural grants selection process. She is working on developing improvements to the testing program for Contagious Equine Metritus. Sonder also works with Ferraro as a liaison among industry representatives and veterinary faculty to find solutions to equine health and welfare problems.

Sonder has been a practicing veterinarian for the past 15 years and owns Napa Valley Veterinary Hospital, a companion animal practice. She began riding horses at the age of 7 and competed in the hunter/jumper show circuits in New England until 1990. The years of competition provided her with the understanding of what is expected of the elite show jumping horse. Her training has included an equine emphasis, and she is particularly interested in lameness evaluation and treatment of performance horses.
