How do you know if your pet is experiencing a medical emergency and should be seen by a veterinarian? If you think it is an emergency, then it is one. Don’t wait…don’t play amateur veterinarian and scour the internet for the answer. Don’t call your best friend and see what they have to say. It is better to be cautious rather than have matters worsen. Problems caught early are typically easier to treat, have a better outcome and cost less to manage.
My guest today knows all about emergencies. Dr. Heather Mineo not only works at referral animal hospital, one with a variety of specialists but is one of a handful of veterinarians in the United States who is a criticalist- board certified in veterinary emergency and critical care.

Dr. Heather K. Mineo is a native of Southern California. She attended college at the University of San Diego and completed her DVM degree at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on the island of St. Kitts in 2000. In 2001, she concluded a one-year internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at VCA Manhattan Veterinary Group in New York before moving home to California to begin work as an emergency veterinarian in San Diego County. She later completed a residency in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care and earned her Specialist Certification in 2009.
Wound management, soft tissue surgery, trauma, tracheal stent placement, and mechanical ventilation are some of Dr. Heather K. Mineo’s special interests. Many of her cases are referred for advanced imaging procedures and emergency surgeries as well as for intensive management and diagnosis of unstable internal medicine patients. Dr. Heather K. Mineo has specialized training in abdominal and thoracic ultrasound, rhinoscopy, endoscopy, fluoroscopy, and laparoscopy. She has extensive experience in managing Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia and Thrombocytopenia, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Sepsis/SIRS, and pneumonia cases among others.
Dr. Heather K. Mineo lives in North Orange County with her husband and four children. She has three dogs, all of whom have been rescued as abandoned or relinquished hospital patients. When she’s not at work, she enjoys time at the beach, reading, country dancing, and wine tasting. She spends a great deal of time with her extended family and they frequently travel together. She also enjoys concert-going and is a big fan of the Dave Matthews Band.
