Finding good adoptive homes for healthy homeless animals is a daunting task that many good people throughout New York devote their lives to. But finding adoptive homes for homeless animals with special needs is even more of a challenge. Often, the medical costs of rehabilitating an abused or neglected animal is prohibitive, leaving cash-strapped animal rescue agencies to make heartbreaking choices.

The American Humane Association, which has been a voice for abused and neglected animals and children since 1877, is seeking to alleviate some of the financial burden with their recently established  “ Second Chance Fund”. By providing financial assistance, in select cases, to animal welfare organizations responsible for the temporary care of animals as they are prepared for adoption into permanent, loving homes, the program provides animal victims of abuse or neglect with a “second chance” at life. One of the fund’s many beneficiaries includes “Under My Wing Avian Refuge” of Franklin, New Jersey.

New York socialite and fashion designer Tinsley Mortimer, who has been described as “one of the most photographed socialites in New York”, is hoping some of her celebu-shine will spill over onto American Humane’s “Second Chance” fund. The fundraising effort was launched with a glittering fundraiser held last fall at the high-end Madison Avenue accessories shop, Samantha Thavasa, for which Tinsley designs a line of handbags. Pets In the City attended the bash and later had the opportunity to speak with Tinsley and American Humane’s President and Chief Executive Officer Robin R. Ganzert, Listen in for an exclusive peek inside of Tinsley’s everyday life, including what being a ‘socialite’ means to her and her efforts on behalf of animals, and how her own two Chihuahuas inspire her.
