BIO:
I’ve been a writer since the third-grade, when my class put on a play I wrote. I thought it was amazing to hear people reading my words, and I immediately decided to become a writer.
After college, I started out as a newspaper reporter, interviewing intriguing people and writing about every topic imaginable. This background taught me how to write succinctly and under tight deadlines. Next, I wrote and edited for consumer and trade magazines. Then I caught the book bug when I worked as a managing editor for two children’s publishing companies. Now I've finally found my niche, working as a freelance writer—the most rewarding job ever!
When I meet kids at book festivals and in classrooms, they always ask where I get my ideas. Most ideas are staring you right in the face. Many of my books are written about my passion: animals both wild and tame. Others are written about people and topics that I want to know more about. I’ve written about all kinds of cool things: deep-sea robots, transposing pianos, political cartoons, and a heroine pig!
When I’m not writing, you can find me hiking up to fire towers with my dogs, swimming or kayaking in the local lake, snowshoeing, taking photos of animals and nature, volunteering at humane societies, cooking vegetarian delights, and reading up a storm!
