Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant joined the ASPCA in 1997, and is Vice President of the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), which is housed in the ASPCA’s Midwest Office in Urbana, Ill. The premier animal poison control center in North America, the APCC is an allied agency of the University of Illinois, and its specially-trained staff provides assistance to pet owners and specific analysis and treatment recommendations to veterinarians pertaining to toxic chemicals and dangerous plants, products or substances, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Dr. Gwaltney-Brant is responsible for the training and management of the APCC hotline staff, which currently includes five veterinary assistants, 12 certified veterinary technicians, 7 board-certified toxicologists/veterinary toxicologists and 26 veterinarians. She is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology (ABVT) as well as the American Board of Toxicology (DABT), and holds an adjunct instructor position at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Gwaltney-Brant received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from North Carolina State University.  After completing three years in private small animal practice, she entered a combined pathology residency/graduate program at Kansas State University, where she obtained a PhD in veterinary pathology. Prior to joining the ASPCA, she completed a post-doctoral position at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa.

Dr. Gwaltney-Brant has published over 30 first-author articles or chapters in peer-reviewed veterinary or toxicology journals and texts, and is on the editorial review board of five major veterinary journals.  She has spoken at over 40 local, state, regional, and national veterinary and toxicology conferences, including the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium, the American Veterinary Medical Association Symposium, the American Animal Hospital Association Conference, and the North American Conference on Clinical Toxicology.  Dr. Gwaltney-Brant holds professional memberships in the American Veterinary Medical Association, C.L. Davis Foundation for the Advancement of Veterinary and Comparative Pathology, American Association of Veterinary and Comparative Toxicology, American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, and the American Association of Poison Control Centers.  She is co-chairman of the examination committee of the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology.

Dr. Gwaltney-Brant lives in Mahomet, Illinois with her husband, Tom, and their three “kids”: Raster, the border terrier, and Whitney and Trip, the Newfoundlands.
