Kat Albrecht
Kat Albrecht
Kat Albrecht is an award-winning former police bloodhound handler, detective, search-and-rescue manager, and police officer-turned-investigative pet detective. Back in 1996, Kat’s police bloodhound A.J. escaped and was lost in the woods. After using another search-and-rescue dog to locate A.J., Kat developed a vision to pioneer the science of finding lost pets using the same sciences currently used to find lost people.
Kat is the founder of Missing Pet Partnership (www.missingpetpartnership.org), a grassroots national nonprofit organization dedicated to reuniting lost pet with their families through the development of community-based lost pet services. Missing Pet Partnership currently trains and certifies professional pet detectives (called “Missing Animal Response Technicians”) to utilize law enforcement-based investigative techniques like search probability theory, feline behavioral profiling, evidence analysis, deductive reasoning, high tech equipment, cat detection dogs, and scent tracking dogs trained to locate lost pets. Kat pioneered the cross application of law enforcement investigative techniques and technologies, including the use of blood stain analysis testing and the discovery that even the tiniest evidence like cat hair fibers on fence boards (pictured) can help solve lost pet investigations. In 1997, she trained and utilized the first-ever cat detection dog (her retired cadaver dog Rachel) to successfully recover missing cats. Since then, Kat has trained many dogs to track lost pets plus the majority of all operational pet detectives in the USA, Canada, and even Ireland.
Kat and her search dogs have appeared in programs like Extra, CNN, NBC Nightly News, To Tell The Truth, Animal Miracles, Dogs with Jobs, Pets Part of the Family, Breed All About It, K-9 to Five, and The Things We Do For Love. Articles about her work have appeared in publications like People, Reader’s Digest, Parade, Guideposts, The National Examiner, Ladies Home Journal, Cat Fancy, and Bark.
Kat authored her memoirs The Lost Pet Chronicles, a book that details her inspirational journey from cop to pet detective. Her second book Dog Detectives: Train Your Dog to Find Lost Pets was published in 2007. Kat currently lives in Fresno, California but will be relocating to Seattle, Washington in early 2008 to expand Missing Pet Partnership’s national training program.
