Dr. Emily Levine

Dr. Emily Levine has had a life long interest in animal behavior and welfare. Since childhood, she has wanted to be a veterinarian and wanted to help both people and animals. When she was a student in veterinary school, she started to study ethology (animal behavior) and was hooked! It was at this time that she realized just how many misperceptions there were about animal behavior that resulted in the neglect of or mistreatment of animals and how behavior problems can lead to very frustrating and difficult situations for families that cause many owners to relinquish or euthanize their pets. It was at this time that she decided to pursue a residency in animal behavioral medicine.

After completing veterinary school in 2000 at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she was accepted to do an internship at a specialty medical and surgical referral practice in Arizona. She then stayed in Arizona and worked as a general practitioner for 1 year after which she moved to Ithaca, NY to begin her residency in animal behavioral at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After successfully completing her residency she accepted a position in England at The University of Lincoln’s Animal Behaviour, Cognition, and Welfare Department. Here, she ran the behavior clinic, taught students, and did research on clinical behavioral problems.

After several years of living in England, she returned to the states to work in a private practice where she could dedicate all of her time to helping pets with behavioral problems.

Dr. Levine is a published author for both lay articles and scientific articles in peer reviewed journals, and has authored several chapters in textbooks. She has done interviews for radio, television, and articles. She has appeared in an award winning documentary on animal welfare and has lectured internationally on topic on animal behavior. She is one of 46 board certified veterinary behaviorists in the United States.

She currently works in Fairfield New Jersey at the Animal Emergency & Referral Associates (www.animalerc.com).
