Chris Heyde is the deputy director of Government and Legal Affairs for the Animal Welfare Institute in Washington, DC.  Chris began working for the Animal Welfare Institute in 1999 after spending several years as vice president of Davis O’Connell a Washington, DC lobbying firm.  Before that he worked in the US Senate as a staffer for Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Senator Connie Mack of Florida.  While on Capitol Hill he covered a variety of issues for both men including animal protection and environmental issues.

While at the Animal Welfare Institute Chris has been involved in numerous federal and state legislative efforts from helping to establish a national sanctuary system for chimpanzees no longer used in federal research programs to initiating the national campaign against horse slaughter.

After high school in Central Ohio Chris joined the US Army and spent four years as an intelligence analyst in West Germany and the Washington, DC area.  Upon completing his military service, Chris received his BA in political science from Bethany College in West Virginia and his MA in political science/international relations.
