Mary Healey Jamiel, Director of the award-winning documentary, SEARCHDOG drops in to talk with Marcie and Lovey about this exciting new film that highlights humans and canines working together to accomplish heroic acts. Mary gives us a behind-the-scenes look into the canine talent and intelligence that she chronicled. Mary Healey Jamiel has dedicated more than four year’s work documenting the crucial work of humans and dogs that search for missing persons. Jamiel followed Matt Zarrella & the Rhode Island & Maine State Police & Warden Service K9 Teams on missing persons searches, criminal investigations and trainings from Washington State to Rochester, New York to Rangeley, Maine. Her film SEARCHDOG has won Best of the Fest Selection at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Best Documentary at the Ellensburg Film Festival, Audience Award at the Boston Film Festival and Special Jury prize at the Jefferson State Flixx Fest. SEARCHDOG was an official selection of the 2016 Seattle International Film Festival among others across the country, where the film sold out festival screenings and garnered standing ovations from Boston to California. The Hollywood Reporter hails SEARCHDOG as “clear-eyed and exceptionally affecting …” and “… certain to hit animal lovers where they live.” With her passion still mission focused, Jamiel aims to screen SEARCHDOG in theaters across the country to raise funds for animal shelters and organizations that dedicate themselves to saving dogs and finding lost and missing persons. Mary’s previous award-winning documentary, Holy Water-Gate (56 min) was the first film to lay bare 25 years of institutionalized cover-up of child sexual abuse by priests and details the methods and mechanisms that concealed these crimes for decades. Holy Water-Gate premiered on Showtime Networks and broadcast on CBC/Canada, SBS/Australia, TVE/Spain, RTSI/Switzerland, DR/Denmark and the Documentary Channel. Her short film Hidden in the Leaves explores the history of Lyme Disease and focuses on Tick born illness prevention. Hidden in the Leaves was produced in collaboration with URI Entomologist Thomas Mather. She is currently documenting the work of renowned Sculptor Allison Newsome. Newsome is a Rhode Island Artist whose distinctive style and gregarious persona infuse her ceramic, bronze and steel sculptures with unmistakable energy and force.
Mary is a Professor of Film/Media & Communication Studies at the Harrington School of Communication & Media at the University of Rhode Island where she combines her passion for teaching and love of her students with her filmmaking. She lives in Warren with her husband Kurt and their adopted dog Lucy.
