Hilary Swank

Hilary was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Judith Kay (Clough), a secretary, and Stephen Michael Swank, who served in the National Guard and was also a traveling salesman. Her maternal grandmother, Frances Martha Dominguez, was of Mexican descent, and her other roots include German, English, and Scottish. During her early childhood, her family moved to Spokane, Washington, and when she was six, to Bellingham, Washington.

Hilary was discovered as a child by producer Suzy Sachs, who coached her in acting. When she was nine years old, she starred in her first play as "Mowgli" in "The Jungle Book". She began to appear regularly in local theater and school plays. She went to school in Bellingham, where she lived with her family, until she was 16. She competed in the Junior Olympics and Washington State championships in swimming; she ranked 5th in the state in all-around gymnastics (which would come in handy for starring in The Next Karate Kid (1994) years later). In 1990, Hilary and her mother moved to Los Angeles, where she enrolled in South Pasadena High School, and started acting professionally. She appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) but The Next Karate Kid (1994), where she got the part competing against hundreds of other actresses, was her breakout role. Ever since then, she has been much in demand and has worked non-stop in movies. She won the Best Actress Oscar for playing "Brandon Teena" in Boys Don't Cry (1999). In addition to the Oscar, Hilary won the Golden Globe Award for "Best Actress in a Drama" and "Best Actress" prizes from The New York Film Critics, The Los Angeles Film Critics, The Chicago Film Critics and The Broadcast Film Critics Association. She also won the "Breakthrough Performance" prize from The National Board of Review.

Hilary then appeared in supporting roles opposite Cate Blanchett and Keanu Reeves in Sam Raimi's The Gift (2000) and opposite Al Pacino and Robin Williams in Christopher Nolan's Insomnia (2002). Hilary then starred as "Alice Paul" in HBO's Iron Jawed Angels (2004), which told the story of the women's suffragist movement and she was honored with both SAG and Golden Globe nominations for her performance in this film. In 2004, Hilary starred opposite Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman as the title character in Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby (2004); the story of a young woman's quest to realize her dream of becoming a professional boxer. For this performance, she was honored with her second Academy Award for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role" and has garnered "Best Actress" prizes from the National Society of Film Critics, the Screen Actors Guild, The Broadcast Film Critics, and a Golden Globe for "Best Lead Actress in a Drama".

Hilary Swank is the third youngest woman in history to win two Academy Awards for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role".

She subsequently had a supporting role opposite Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett in Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia (2006), starred in Freedom Writers (2007), the true story of Long Beach schoolteacher, Erin Gruwell, The Reaping (2007) for Warner Brothers, and reunited with her Freedom Writers (2007) writer/director, Richard LaGravenese, starring in the film adaptation of Cecelia Ahern's novel, P.S. I Love You (2007).

An aficionado for anything that involves the outdoors, she enjoys: sky diving, river rafting and skiing.

Jane Lynch

Jane Lynch is a Golden Globe and Emmy-Award winning film and television actress. She is best known for her role as Coach Sue Sylvester on the TV series Glee.

Jane Lynch was born on July 14, 1960, in Dolton, Illinois. In the 1990s, she made guest appearances on a number of TV sitcoms, including 3rd Rock from the Sun. In 2000, she appeared in the film Best in Show. In 2002, she landed a leading role on MDs. In 2005, she was in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, followed by the show Two and a Half Men. In 2009, she got her most famous role to date as Sue Sylvester on Glee.

Early Life

Actress Jane Lynch was born on July 14, 1960, in Dolton, Illinois. Raised outside of Chicago, she discovered her love for acting in the third grade while playing a candle in a school production.

In high school, Lynch participated in the choir. She loved singing and performing in school plays, but much of the time she preferred to keep a low profile. "I would step out occasionally and show what I had, and people would go, 'Wow, that's something.' And then I would kind of recede back," she explained to Time magazine. Socially, "I traveled within all the groups," Lynch explained to The New York Times. That "started that pattern of don't stay long enough for anyone to get to know you, to see the chinks in your armor."

After graduating high school, Lynch studied acting at Illinois State University. She then continued to hone her craft at Cornell University's graduate program for acting. "I think learning how to act is pretty important," Lynch later told Curve. "I have some techniques and skills I learned when I was 21 that have been hammered into my consciousness, that are now second nature."

After some time in New York, Lynch moved back to Illinois and immersed herself in the Chicago theater scene. She worked with such famous groups as the Steppenwolf Theatre Company and the Second City Touring Company. One of her most famous theatrical roles was playing TV mom Carol Brady in the underground sensation The Real Live Brady Bunch. Lynch enjoyed the experience, describing it as "a joy, it was a real gift and a lot of fun. Very little work. But I really learned how to nail the sitcom format and grew to love that," she told Curve magazine.

Mainstream Success

One of Lynch's first film roles was in the 1988 comedy Vice Versa with Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage. More small parts followed in such movies as Straight Talk and The Fugitive. On television, Lynch made guest appearances on a number of sitcoms, including 3rd Rock from the Sun and Married with Children.

She also did some voice-over and commercials. For one ad, Lynch worked with director Christopher Guest to create a cereal commercial. Months later, the two met up again by accident at a Beverly Hills restaurant, and he asked her to stop by his office. At the time, he was casting his spoof of the dog show world, Best in Show (2000). Lynch signed on to play Christy Cummings, a tough dog trainer who gets involved with a dog owner (played by Jennifer Coolidge). The actors in Guest's films work in an improvisational style. "They give us a really good thumbnail sketch, and then we just take it from there," Lynch explained to The Advocate. "We improvise all the dialogue; there's no written dialogue."

With the success of Best in Show, Lynch soon landed a leading role on television, playing a nurse in the 2002 medical drama MDs. The show only lasted for two months before being canceled. She also lent her voice to a recurring character on the animated comedy The Family Guy. Reuniting with Christopher Guest, Lynch appeared in the folk music comedy A Mighty Wind (2003) as a singer with a past in the adult film industry.

Big and Small Screen

While often tackling small parts, Lynch made the most out each role she took on. She made a number of memorable guest appearances on such shows as Arrested Development, Desperate Housewives, and Weeds. On the big screen, Lynch appeared as a raunchy store manager in The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) with Steve Carell, stealing nearly every scene she appeared in.

The following year, Lynch played the mother of a race car driver in the comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby starring Will Farrell. She also starred in her own sitcom, Lovespring International, which aired on the Lifetime television network. On the show, Lynch played the owner of a dating service. The series only lasted for 13 episodes.

Lynch had better luck with her recurring role on the popular dramatic series The L Word, which followed the lives of several gay women. On the show she played Joyce Wischnia, a tough lawyer who falls for her client (Cybill Shepherd) while handling her divorce. As a lesbian herself, Lynch especially admired how the series depicted life in the lesbian community. On the show, "we just tell stories about people. That's what I love about The L Word. No one's tortured over their sexuality; it's just accepted," she told The Advocate.

Emmy Award winner Jane Lynch (GLEE) is set to co-host FOX’S CAUSE FOR PAWS: AN ALL-STAR DOG SPECTACULAR (previously titled THE GREAT AMERICAN DOG-A-THON), alongside executive producer and co-host Hilary Swank, on Thanksgiving night, Thursday, Nov. 27 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. In addition, PEDIGREE® Food for Dogs will be presenting the “Shelter Hero of the Year” award, a special award honoring an individual who has dedicated his/her life to making sure shelter dogs receive the love, care and resources they need to find their forever home. During the two-hour special, viewers also will be provided with information regarding adoptable animals in their local areas and have the opportunity to make donations to the Petfinder Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that supports shelters and rescue groups nationwide. Celebrities also will introduce the audience to rescue dogs, giving viewers the opportunity to foster or adopt a new best friend. Kristin Chenoweth, Whitney Cummings, Max Greenfield, Kathy Griffin, Julianne Hough, Randy Jackson, Cesar Millan, Jerry O’Connell, Kelly Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne, P!nk, Amber Riley, Rebecca Romijn, Emmy Rossum and Jenna Dewan Tatum join previously announced celebrities participating in the event, including Paula Abdul, Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, Fergie, Carrie Ann Inaba, Scarlett Johansson, Kesha, Miranda Lambert, LeAnn Rimes and Betty White. And one of the human stars, right? Yeah. I co host the show I'm so excited about. I'm so thankful on Thanksgiving Day to be able to say that fox gave us the platform, I think, to really get the statistics out there so that people have the knowledge, because as we know knowledge is power. And the more that people know that there's 8 million animals in shelters across the United States every year, and sadly, 4 million never make it out. I know then millions of people want dogs. They want to bring them into their household, into their family. So I just want to encourage people that if they do want a new four legged family member to rescue, to change the path of a soul, to change a life, to save a life, because that also changes our lives. Yeah.

They're so grateful. My dog looks at me every day with such pure love, and it's just so grateful. And I couldn't imagine my life without a dog. I couldn't either. Made my life so much richer. And you mentioned that 4 million dogs don't make it out. And out of that 4 million, there's a dog for everyone. Don't you agree that people don't have to? I completely agree.

And the other good thing to know about the statistics is that 25% of those 8 million are purebred, because a lot of people were like, oh, but I want a pure bred, because I want this specific breed. Well, you can find it. I'm known as the dog pair. That's what people call me. And anyone who says what they're looking for, I can find it. I agree with you 100%. And by the end of tonight, that number may change. I love that my number may change, too, hopefully. So why is it so important for us to rescue animals? Because so many of them need homes and love and families. They need forever homes. And there's no better feeling in the world than expanding your family. Love increases exponentially. It's not like you don't have enough love to go around, so bringing more and more pets in is only a good thing. I love the way you said that.

Rebecca Romijn [00:04:37]:
With five at your home. Quickly, who are your five? We've got bim, pirate, better business, kisses galore. That is his full name, but we call him better. And then our two cats are captain and Smitty. And the first three are dogs? Yes, the first three are dogs. And what have you learned from your animals? I believe animals are teachers. Oh, man. I mean, you learn a certain amount of with.

Rebecca Romijn [00:05:00]:
And cats are different than dogs, too, so you sort of have to respect their space and let them come to you. And then with know, you just learn patience. And dogs are so, I mean, especially because we have small children. Dogs are so helpful with small children. Very good point. Build food underneath the table. I never wiped up a single thing. Those dogs helped me out so much when my babies were little.

Megan Blake [00:05:20]:

Kristin, could you tell us why it's so important to adopt a pet? Because lots of pets didn't choose to be born and they need to be loved. And Iris from master chef Jr. Master Chef Jr. I've been watching your show. I love it. What's it like doing a show that adults were very competitive on, but now you kids are just rocking it. What's that like? It's a lot of fun and it's really crazy.

Yeah. What's your specialty in cooking? Probably, like red meat and seafood. Okay. What about you? My specialty are french macarons. It took me about over 60 tries to perfect the perfect cookie. So tell us about the animals in your life. We're here today with Cause for Paws for Fox. So tell us about your animals.

David Arquette [00:10:01]:
So I have two basset hounds, Dallas and Luna, that we rescued. Yeah, we rescued from Detroit. We rescued Dallas from Detroit and Luna from here. And they're just amazing. I mean, my fiance loves Bassett hounds, so we went specifically to Bassett Hound rescue and found them. And that's like the main thing that people should remember. If you want a certain breed, you can find them. They all have different people that do that.

Megan Blake [00:10:27]:
I love that. You're absolutely right, because so many people who want to breed, they think they need to go to a breeder, but no, they can find them all over the country, right?

David Arquette [00:10:34]:
Absolutely.

Megan Blake [00:10:35]:
And I believe that animals are healers and teachers. Do your Bassett hounds ever teach you anything?

David Arquette [00:10:39]:
Absolutely. Our one dog, Dallas, just, he really has, we say, human eyes, and he's just such a sweetheart. He loves my fiance so much. He'll just wait for, if she's in a room, I'll go downstairs and the other dog will go downstairs. He'll just wait until she goes downstairs. It's just that kind of loyalty that just really makes dogs so wonderful.

Megan Blake [00:11:03]:
Absolutely. And who do you have with you here tonight?

David Arquette [00:11:05]:
Papa Bear, who's very upset with me turning my back because I've been teasing him with snacks all day.

Megan Blake [00:11:12]:
And is Papa Bear up for adoption? Why is he here tonight?

David Arquette [00:11:15]:
He's up for adoption. He was found along the La river. He's an amazing english bulldog. He's very sweet with people and with other dogs, but he's a little upset with me because I've been teasing him with snacks.

Megan Blake [00:11:28]:
He looks like he's pretty well fed, though.

David Arquette [00:11:30]:
Yeah. But he's going to be a big star. He'll be on the show tonight.

Megan Blake [00:11:33]:
Absolutely. We're so excited about this show, David. And tell us also, what else do you have coming up where we could see you or one of your amazing shows you're producing? You have so many things going on.

Kathy Griffin [00:12:07]:
Well, Kathy, it's been a dream of mine to talk with you also. And I remember the very funny story you told on one of your shows about how you were in a hotel and your dog got out and you were in your underwear running on. One time I was staying in a very fancy hotel. I was on tour and they said, you can bring your dogs. And there was like a really nice patio, and somehow the dogs got out. Of the patio. And as I saw the dogs running out, and they were so excited to be out, even though it was like this gorgeous hotel suite, they were like, oh, thank God, we're out of car. And so I ran out to get them.

Kathy Griffin [00:12:35]:
I didn't happen to be wearing pants at the time. I mean, you're lucky I'm wearing pants today. Yeah, I was sleeping. Or just not in pants. And then the door. Hotels doors, they close behind you sometimes. So I was just standing there in my granny panties and a top calling the dog's names. And then, of course, two lesbians with hearts of gold, because, you know, the lesbians can just look at a dog and go, do it.

Kathy Griffin [00:12:55]:
It's like, they're like, Mr. Miyagi, I didn't know that. I did not know that. Don't let a heterosexual train your dog. Absolutely not. Make sure it's a lesbian. Good to know. And then they actually brought the dog back to me.

Kathy Griffin [00:13:04]:
And then I had to go, like, get the key in the front door. Were you in your underwear when you underwear the whole time? It was humiliating. It makes a great story. And then it was in one of my specials. I saw that. And, Kathy, why should we all adopt a pet? Because they don't have voices for themselves, so we have to take care of them. And you don't even know how much they're going to give you until you have a dog. And then I would say add a second dog.

Megan Blake [00:13:22]:
It's even easier. I so agree with that. Thank you. Kathy Griffin from Life on the D list. And, yes, I totally believe in having two dogs. Dogs are pack animals, so with two, they keep each other company. And I believe that behavioral problems can often be helped by having two trained dogs in a family structure. And angel and smiley, they give that idea eight paws up.

Megan Blake [00:13:44]:

Her name is Ruby, and she's a miniature snouser. Oh, she's adorable. Amber, tell me about the animals in your life. I have two dogs. One's name is Milo, and he's so cute, he's so lovable, and he loves to lick, lick all day. All he wants is hugs and his belly rubs, and he's a multi poo. And then I have my rescue dog, and his name is Chewie. And he's a poodle also, and he's mixed with something, but we don't know what.

Amber Riley [00:14:20]:
He's super cute. So I believe that animals are healers and teachers. What do you learn from your animals? I think I've learned a lot of patience because when I first got chewy, because he's a rescue, we really had to learn one another. We really did have to learn one another. And I kind of had to adjust a little bit of my life for him and learn patience because they're just like, know. And now we really know each other, and we're really close, and they add so much to our lives. They do. Well, thank you so much for everything that you're doing and contributing your great talents to this cause tonight.

Amber Riley [00:14:50]:
Thank you. So what would you tell everyone as far as rescuing pets? Could you just give a shout out your message to our audience? I would say rescuing a pet, not only did it do something just for my heart, for saving a pet, but I feel like they added something to my life, having my dog in my home, too. I agree with you 100%. Thank you, Roslyn. Tell us about the importance of the event tonight. I want people to know that it is important to stop buying pets and adopt a pet.

There's 80 million stray dogs in America that need a home. I'm from Puerto Rico. I work with an organization called Pet SOS. In Puerto Rico, we have more than 300,000 stray dogs. And Puerto Rico is a tiny little island. So it's a big, big problem. Yes. So the importance of neutering and spaying and just adopt.

Roslyn Sanchez [00:16:25]:
Don't spend money buying a dog. There's so many that need a home. There's so many. And do you have animals in your life? I have four dogs. Tell me, tell me. Oh, my God. I have Mota, Uzo, Jack and Maraca. They're 18, 1513 and nine.

Roslyn Sanchez [00:16:37]:
That's how old they are. Bless you. Bless you. One of them now is fighting colon cancer, but he's doing chemo. But we're fighting it. We're fighting it. Well, good luck to you. And tonight, I understand there's going to be a special segment with Betty White about senior dogs.

Senior dogs. I should have brought my dog. Absolutely. I love that. Thank you to without a traces, Roslyn Sanchez for stewarding your dear senior dogs. And tonight on the tv spectacular, as I mentioned, Betty White and Wendy Malik, who both have joined us on A Super Smiley Adventure. On earlier shows, they will be appearing on Fox's Cause for Paws, talking about senior dogs. They'll have several seniors with them who were left at shelters and they're available for adoption.

Megan Blake [00:17:22]:
And you all know I've caretaken many senior dogs and cats who are now at Rainbow Bridge. And I know you all remember Tootsuite, the travel kitty. He was one of my helpers on the show, remember? He would always sit there with me in the studio and now he's gone. But I treasure every single moment that I had with him. In their older ages, these animals still give so much love and they are of such great value. Pet Life Radio and his super Smiley adventure are so thrilled and just beyond honored to be a part of sharing Fox's cause for paws and its amazing mission of pet adoption and stewardship and of these so deserving rescued pets, Smiley and angel, they are both just smiling. So save our shelter is a really neat show. It's one of the first unique. Yeah, yeah. Where we go out and we help rescues. So we really look at the rescues and we help them with fundraising and just a lot of time with rescues. They're underfunded and overwhelmed, and so we go out there and we bring all the power of Hollywood and the community and really give them all the tools and resources that they need. Yeah.

Everybody probably saw him, right? Yep.

He was eight weeks old, and as a puppy, he just ran after a piece of ice and really kind of was very excited about it.

So is he a rescue? Where did you get him?

Tracy Chan [00:21:06]:
I got him from a guy who just had two corgis and happened to have a litter. And, yeah, the rest is history.

Megan Blake [00:21:13]:
Well, bless you for getting him into being such a good pet steward. So tell us about the night tonight and how important it is for all of us to know about adopting pets and bringing them and embracing them as part of our family. Do you agree with that?

Tracy Chan [00:21:23]:
Yeah, totally. I mean, this is such a great cause. There's so many dogs who are looking for a good home, and it's really great that Fox is coming together and really causing awareness for such a great issue.

Megan Blake [00:21:34]:
I agree. Big shout out to Fox and all these doggies. Hey, baby. Bandit. Yes. That's Bandit in the background. So Bandit's been talking. What do you think Bandit's saying to us?

And this is a little cocker spaniel, right?

I'm not really sure what is.

Cavalier King Charles. There you go. A spaniel. Okay. So could you tell everybody the importance of rescue? Why that is so important?

Max Greenfield [00:22:45]:
Well, look at this. This shouldn't be in a cage somewhere. This should be home. Absolutely in bed with somebody.

Megan Blake [00:22:53]:
Absolutely. And I believe that animals are healers and teachers. Can you tell me, do your animals teach you anything at home about life?

Max Greenfield [00:23:00]:
I don't know how much they're teaching me, but we hope that they're teaching our daughter responsibility.

Megan Blake [00:23:06]:

Max Greenfield [00:23:09]:
It's just nice having him around. He's just so much fun. He's just loving.

Well, I like all those things. They have fun, relax, responsibility, love. I like all those things.

And when I became a public person, I made sure that I was involved in many dog charities because I totally believe that when you adopt a dog, when you foster dog or rescue, it's a gift to both and it's a gift that keeps on giving. We are so. It's perfect. It's perfect. And Cesar, we love your show. You are indeed the dog whisperer. And tell us the importance of pet adoption, because the dogs in the shelters, they're adoptable pets. They can make family members. Is that correct?

Cesar Millan [00:24:47]:
Well, first of all, you have to adopt a dog that's compatible to you. Most people adopt dogs who are cute or they feel sorry for them. From ten dogs who are rescue every week, six get return. Because most people adopt from an emotional point of view, not from a logical point of view, and you need the combination of both, of course. But compatibility is very important. The dog doesn't really hold on to the past as much as we think the dog is. Okay, I'm in a shelter. Why is my opportunity? Who is going to come here? How much knowledge do you have? Can I go for a long walk? Since I've been in a shelter for a long time? It's really about a dog understanding how to work for his relationship, for his food, for his home, because that makes him appreciate more.

Cesar Millan [00:25:28]:
But if you just grab a dog from a shelter and then bring him to your house, you still have so much physical energy, right? So then he goes from one kennel to a more luxurious kennel. When a dog or an animal is behind cage or behind walls, they develop frustration. So never give affection to a dog that is out of balance because you.

Megan Blake [00:25:47]:
Want to reward the balanced behavior. Is that correct?

Cesar Millan [00:25:49]:
Which most people don't.

Megan Blake [00:25:50]:
Right. I love your philosophy and I believe that animals are healers and teachers. Caesar, what have you learned personally from your dog?

Cesar Millan [00:25:57]:
That's exactly right. They're not students, they're teachers.
