Caring For Disabled Dogs
How can we care for permanently disabled dogs? This topic is an important one to discuss because many injured or disabled dogs are given up by owners to the shelters because they cannot care for them. At the same token, many injured dogs (especially with permanent physical disabilities) have a harder time being adopted. In this episode, Sharon Seltzer, co-founder of Heaven Can Wait Animal Society and founder of Dog Wheelchair LIFE will be sharing with us her expertise and experience in this area of canine care.
BIO:
Creator and Writer of Dog Wheelchair LIFE, a blog/website that teaches pet owners how to care for a disabled dog. I started the mission to help owners of newly diagnosed dogs with paralysis after my dog Sophie became paralyzed with a progressive neurologic disease. I’m currently the pet mom to two dogs: Bailey, a sweet 80lb Rottweiler mix and Olivia, a stubborn little Beagle. I also have a very old cat named Tiger, who’s the only surviving member of a litter of 4 feral kittens I rescued in 2007. I’ve been an animal writer for many years, writing for the American Animal Hospital Association newsletter, the Care2 website for social activists and lots of magazines. I’m also one of the founders of Heaven Can Wait Animal Society in Las Vegas, NV. We rescue and adopt homeless pets and run the only nonprofit spay/neuter clinic in the area. Our group spays/neuters 10,000 – 13,000 cats and dogs each year since starting in 2000.
