How Kids Can Help Rescue Dogs
Today's show is dedicated to highlighting how kids can help rescue dogs and how parents can support this initiative. The more kids understand the concerns around homeless dogs and other domestic animals, they may want to help their cause and be more compassionate to animals. This was the case with 9 year old Selena Schulz who helps various animal shelters with monetary and supply donations. The 'Lucky Kids Club' created by Lucky Dog Animal Rescue also has a mission to educate, involve and share their experience with kids. As the next generation of dog parents, the more children gets hands on experience with helping rescues, the more they can pass animal compassion to one another.
BIO:
Selena Schulz
After one of her visits to a local animal shelter, 8 year old Selena Schulz wanted to do something to help. For her 8th birthday she asked for donations for the animals in shelters instead of getting presents, and she donated it all to 3 local Pasco County organizations. After what she did she wanted to reach out more. Now at age 9, she wrote and self-published a book last summer titled “A Bed A Buck A Buddy; Cici’s Amazing Birthday”. She wanted to write a book to inspire other children to help animals in shelters.
The idea of "A Bed A Buck A Buddy" was started by her and her dad. “A Bed” stands for beds, food, and other supplies the animals in shelters need. “A Buck” stands for any amount of money people would like to donate. “A Buddy” stands for adopting or becoming a buddy to an animal in a shelter by volunteering. 100% of the money she gets from the sales of her book go to local Animal organizations.
She does 1 book signing a month and has been invited to speak at libraries, Elementary schools, Reading Festivals, and to sell her books at local animal events; including The Florida Gulf Coast Cluster AKC dog show. Selena has also received the very FIRST Student Humanitarian of the Year Award for Countryside Montessori Charter School on May 29th, 2015 as well as a Resolution Award from the Pasco County Commissioner (Pat Mulieri) for what she did for her birthday.
Lucky Dog Animal Rescue (with program coordinator Carrie Fallon)
Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned animals, primarily dogs from high-kill shelters and owners who can no longer care for them. By working with committed volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, trainers, and boarding facilities, we are able to rescue hundreds of animals every year, provide them with loving temporary care, and find them well-matched, carefully screened forever homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training, and good nutrition.
