Jill Rappaport: Welcome back to Rappaport to the Rescue.

00:02:20.509 --> 00:02:21.529
Jill Rappaport: I'm Jill Rappaport.

00:02:21.529 --> 00:02:30.569
Jill Rappaport: And certainly one of the greatest gifts that Vancouver has given us are the designs of this amazing woman, Dalia MacPhee.

00:02:30.569 --> 00:02:33.389
Jill Rappaport: And Dalia, I'm so happy that you're joining us today.

00:02:33.389 --> 00:02:36.789
Jill Rappaport: You have done such incredible work in your career.

00:02:36.789 --> 00:02:46.049
Jill Rappaport: And what I love most about your beautiful fashions is affordable for women of all ages and really can appeal to anybody of any lifestyle.

00:02:46.549 --> 00:02:48.529
Dalia MacPhee: Hi, thank you for having me, by the way.

00:02:48.529 --> 00:02:49.729
Dalia MacPhee: >I love what you do.

00:02:49.729 --> 00:02:51.409
Jill Rappaport: Oh, thank you so much.

00:02:51.409 --> 00:02:54.509
Dalia MacPhee: It means a lot to take the time out today and chat.

00:02:54.509 --> 00:02:56.669
Jill Rappaport: Well, you are so creative.

00:02:56.669 --> 00:03:05.449
Jill Rappaport: And when I heard about you and I started reading about you, you're so much more than just a designer, creating amazing fashion.

00:03:05.449 --> 00:03:11.549
Jill Rappaport: That is one skill and one talent in itself, but you take it to a whole different level, Dalia.

00:03:11.549 --> 00:03:13.429
Dalia MacPhee: Well, creation is creation.

00:03:13.429 --> 00:03:15.849
Dalia MacPhee: It's all the same, you know, as far as I'm concerned.

00:03:16.189 --> 00:03:25.929
Jill Rappaport: I was cracking up reading your bio because you started out as a young child thinking you might have had this talent, but others didn't think you did, did they?

00:03:25.929 --> 00:03:27.769
Dalia MacPhee: Oh, you're speaking about Mrs.

00:03:27.769 --> 00:03:28.569
Dalia MacPhee: Stewart?

00:03:28.569 --> 00:03:29.149
Jill Rappaport: Yeah.

00:03:29.149 --> 00:03:31.209
Jill Rappaport: What a nightmare.

00:03:31.209 --> 00:03:31.649
Dalia MacPhee: Right.

00:03:31.649 --> 00:03:36.449
Dalia MacPhee: That was when I was in school, it was mandatory to take a home economics class.

00:03:37.289 --> 00:03:43.729
Dalia MacPhee: And the fall season was sewing and then the spring, summer season was cooking.

00:03:43.729 --> 00:03:49.929
Dalia MacPhee: And she threatened to fail me because I was useless with the sewing machine at the time.

00:03:49.929 --> 00:03:57.229
Dalia MacPhee: And we had this school project and it was to sew this blouse that was the most ugly blouse you'd ever seen in your life.

00:03:57.229 --> 00:04:05.329
Dalia MacPhee: And the idea was you had to sew this blouse in the most wretched fabric and the most wretched color, and then you were going to model it in front of the entire school.

00:04:06.089 --> 00:04:11.709
Dalia MacPhee: And so I learned early on that if you're not motivated, you can't do anything, right?

00:04:11.709 --> 00:04:15.649
Dalia MacPhee: So I just wasn't motivated and was not doing well in school.

00:04:15.649 --> 00:04:21.369
Dalia MacPhee: And so she made me stay after school because I was, I guess, remedial with the sewing machine.

00:04:21.369 --> 00:04:32.009
Dalia MacPhee: And my memory there was trying to sew this blouse and her being very stern with me and accidentally running over her nail.

00:04:32.009 --> 00:04:34.189
Dalia MacPhee: So her nail is now caught in the sewing machine.

00:04:34.749 --> 00:04:41.249
Dalia MacPhee: And she paused and she just looked at me and said, I suggest you never pursue a career in fashion.

00:04:41.249 --> 00:04:43.749
Jill Rappaport: And hello, fast forward.

00:04:43.749 --> 00:04:48.729
Jill Rappaport: Did you ever get back to that lovely lady and let her know, hello, here I am.

00:04:48.729 --> 00:04:49.469
Dalia MacPhee: Right.

00:04:49.469 --> 00:04:56.929
Dalia MacPhee: I wish she said, I suggest you never pursue a, you know, a cure for cancer because we might have that now.

00:04:56.929 --> 00:04:58.689
Dalia MacPhee: I would think I would prove her wrong.

00:04:58.689 --> 00:05:00.969
Jill Rappaport: Did you ever prove her wrong?

00:05:00.969 --> 00:05:08.349
Jill Rappaport: And what is it about your designs that is so important to you to make them appeal to everybody?

00:05:08.349 --> 00:05:29.189
Dalia MacPhee: Well, I think I was a little bit lucky in that I grew up in the business, but on the resale side, my parents had some floating stores in Canada and I was pretty much at that time, I hated it because I was forced after school was really spent in the stores and vacations were spent to company mom and dad on overseas trips and whatnot.

00:05:29.189 --> 00:05:33.849
Dalia MacPhee: But I always remember watching my mom selling to women.

00:05:34.009 --> 00:05:43.609
Dalia MacPhee: And at a young age, seeing women of all ages and all sizes, and literally witnessing them being transformed with clothing and understanding.

00:05:43.609 --> 00:05:49.009
Dalia MacPhee: I think it was always just drilled in my head, make sure you design for people.

00:05:49.009 --> 00:05:52.489
Dalia MacPhee: 62 percent of American women are oversized 12s.

00:05:52.489 --> 00:05:55.649
Dalia MacPhee: It makes sense that fashion is for everyone.

00:05:55.649 --> 00:05:58.309
Dalia MacPhee: So it's really important that we make it for everyone.

00:05:58.309 --> 00:06:07.289
Jill Rappaport: Well, and it's so great today that we embrace people of all sizes and we welcome seeing women of all sizes.

00:06:07.289 --> 00:06:10.329
Jill Rappaport: There used to be a time, the thinner the better.

00:06:10.329 --> 00:06:16.609
Jill Rappaport: And now people are so happy and so thrilled that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

00:06:16.609 --> 00:06:25.729
Jill Rappaport: And thank goodness for designers like you that appreciate that and understand that and have always designed for women of all sizes.

00:06:25.729 --> 00:06:26.149
Dalia MacPhee: Thank you.

00:06:26.149 --> 00:06:27.949
Dalia MacPhee: Yeah, we've evolved quite a bit.

00:06:27.949 --> 00:06:33.309
Dalia MacPhee: And I think it's always hard when you're the renegade and the pioneer for something.

00:06:33.309 --> 00:06:39.789
Dalia MacPhee: I was one of the first mainstream designers to go all vegan way before it was the cool thing to do.

00:06:39.789 --> 00:06:42.689
Dalia MacPhee: But now look at how the industry has changed.

00:06:42.689 --> 00:06:51.709
Dalia MacPhee: I don't think we would have ever thought that some of the old school iconic household names would be going vegan, would be getting rid of fur.

00:06:51.709 --> 00:06:55.989
Dalia MacPhee: And we just don't need to anymore with what we're able to create.

00:06:55.989 --> 00:06:57.229
Dalia MacPhee: We're not living in caves.

00:06:57.429 --> 00:07:01.449
Jill Rappaport: And by the way, the vegan fashions are so beautiful.

00:07:01.449 --> 00:07:05.129
Jill Rappaport: And I love the sheen to the vegan pants.

00:07:05.129 --> 00:07:08.849
Jill Rappaport: I mean, they're just so great looking and so fashion forward.

00:07:08.849 --> 00:07:12.429
Jill Rappaport: And I think it's so wonderful that you were so ahead of your time.

00:07:12.429 --> 00:07:15.529
Jill Rappaport: How did you know back then, Dalia, when you started?

00:07:15.529 --> 00:07:18.449
Jill Rappaport: Why was it so important to you to go vegan?

00:07:18.449 --> 00:07:22.249
Dalia MacPhee: Well, the basics were always motivational for me.

00:07:22.249 --> 00:07:25.369
Dalia MacPhee: So obviously, I never wanted to do fur, I never did fur.

00:07:26.149 --> 00:07:31.249
Dalia MacPhee: I never wanted to do, you know, ostrich or any of those things that were quite apparent.

00:07:31.249 --> 00:07:40.409
Dalia MacPhee: But I remember chatting with a friend of mine in New York, who was fully vegan and really spent time in a lot of the vegan circles.

00:07:40.409 --> 00:07:43.849
Dalia MacPhee: And she had said, you know, there's no vegan designers, Dalia.

00:07:43.849 --> 00:07:48.289
Dalia MacPhee: And I said, well, I don't know what you mean, because I'm not doing leather and I'm not doing fur.

00:07:48.289 --> 00:07:58.369
Dalia MacPhee: And she said, yeah, but you can't do silk either, because she explained how silk is made, which is actually quite sad, because we're killing the silk worm in the process as well.

00:07:58.369 --> 00:08:05.349
Dalia MacPhee: So that really helped to kind of motivate me to look into it further and say, and I like challenges.

00:08:05.349 --> 00:08:11.909
Dalia MacPhee: So for me, it was like, okay, how can I create materials that look like silk, that feel like silk, but aren't silk?

00:08:11.909 --> 00:08:15.769
Dalia MacPhee: And so that kind of, you know, was the motivational factor.

00:08:15.769 --> 00:08:18.689
Dalia MacPhee: But then at that time, it wasn't the coolest thing to do.

00:08:18.689 --> 00:08:19.769
Dalia MacPhee: So we didn't tell people.

00:08:20.149 --> 00:08:23.349
Jill Rappaport: Oh, my goodness, you were keeping that wonderful thing a secret?

00:08:23.349 --> 00:08:26.489
Dalia MacPhee: Yeah, look, the main thing is that you exact change.

00:08:26.489 --> 00:08:29.369
Dalia MacPhee: And I think you do it however you can, right?

00:08:29.369 --> 00:08:33.089
Dalia MacPhee: So at that time, people heard vegan and they thought burlap.

00:08:33.089 --> 00:08:35.749
Dalia MacPhee: They thought, you know, potato sass on models.

00:08:35.749 --> 00:08:40.829
Dalia MacPhee: So for me, it was like, they're not going to get it, and they may actually not buy it because of that.

00:08:40.829 --> 00:08:42.709
Dalia MacPhee: But we're doing something good.

00:08:42.709 --> 00:08:47.129
Dalia MacPhee: So I kind of did the back door entrance, which was, here's this beautiful collection.

00:08:47.129 --> 00:08:48.049
Dalia MacPhee: Everyone loves it.

00:08:48.529 --> 00:08:54.209
Dalia MacPhee: And then we would start telling some celebrities or people that were vegan, by the way, it's vegan.

00:08:54.209 --> 00:09:00.109
Jill Rappaport: Well, again, going back to the model you live by and what you're known for, couture with a conscience.

00:09:00.109 --> 00:09:01.369
Dalia MacPhee: Right, right.

00:09:01.369 --> 00:09:06.589
Dalia MacPhee: And so, for example, I started something recently and I found the same pushback.

00:09:06.589 --> 00:09:15.789
Dalia MacPhee: So during COVID, I started, I went from evening gowns to hospital gowns very quickly and was producing gowns for the hospitals.

00:09:15.949 --> 00:09:19.149
Dalia MacPhee: And, you know, I think we all were kind of, where do you need me?

00:09:19.149 --> 00:09:21.769
Dalia MacPhee: Type of thing because it was such an emergency.

00:09:22.389 --> 00:09:25.829
Dalia MacPhee: And I agreed in a wallet that disinfects KN95 masks.

00:09:25.829 --> 00:09:29.429
Dalia MacPhee: But I started speaking with the hospitals and asking what they needed.

00:09:29.729 --> 00:09:38.649
Dalia MacPhee: And even something simple like one of the hospitals needed these fanny packs to carry the PPE for the nurses.

00:09:38.649 --> 00:09:44.589
Dalia MacPhee: And as I was producing them, I got into thinking and I said, where are they wearing these fanny packs?

00:09:44.589 --> 00:09:49.309
Dalia MacPhee: And of course, they're wearing that just at the waist or below the waist.

00:09:49.309 --> 00:09:51.929
Dalia MacPhee: So basically over the reproductive organs.

00:09:51.929 --> 00:09:56.189
Dalia MacPhee: And I said, how many people are putting their phones in these PPE packs?

00:09:56.189 --> 00:09:59.709
Dalia MacPhee: And of course, the answer was, well, almost everyone.

00:09:59.709 --> 00:10:05.649
Dalia MacPhee: And I had been playing around with this Faraday type material that blocks cell phone radiation.

00:10:05.649 --> 00:10:08.309
Dalia MacPhee: And you can actually measure it with an EMF reader.

00:10:08.549 --> 00:10:16.729
Dalia MacPhee: So it blocks up to 85% of the radiation, but you can still get a phone call, which is in text messages, which is great.

00:10:16.729 --> 00:10:18.829
Dalia MacPhee: No one really was interested.

00:10:18.829 --> 00:10:23.289
Dalia MacPhee: I think it's like we use our phones every day, so it's things that we don't really want to think about.

00:10:23.289 --> 00:10:25.089
Dalia MacPhee: And so I just put it in there.

00:10:25.089 --> 00:10:26.729
Dalia MacPhee: I was like, I'm not even going to ask.

00:10:26.729 --> 00:10:27.769
Dalia MacPhee: I'm just going to do that.

00:10:27.769 --> 00:10:29.749
Dalia MacPhee: And be that resistance.

00:10:29.749 --> 00:10:39.589
Dalia MacPhee: If, for example, I'm making athletic pads and it's like, oh, by the way, the pockets are lined with radiation blocking material, people don't care so much.

00:10:39.589 --> 00:10:43.509
Dalia MacPhee: And so it's more like, let's just do it because it's a good thing to do.

00:10:43.509 --> 00:10:48.809
Dalia MacPhee: And then maybe when they catch up at some point, we'll start, you know, letting them know.

00:10:48.809 --> 00:10:50.349
Jill Rappaport: That is so incredible.

00:10:50.349 --> 00:10:54.589
Jill Rappaport: I want to buy a whole suit to wear designed by you when I go on an airplane.

00:10:54.589 --> 00:10:58.049
Jill Rappaport: What about all the radiation we're exposed to when we're flying?

00:10:58.049 --> 00:11:00.569
Dalia MacPhee: I have to sleep for a full day after flying.

00:11:00.569 --> 00:11:01.789
Dalia MacPhee: That's how sensitive I am.

00:11:01.789 --> 00:11:03.429
Dalia MacPhee: So I agree with you.

00:11:03.429 --> 00:11:05.129
Jill Rappaport: Well, you are so ahead of your time.

00:11:05.249 --> 00:11:08.389
Jill Rappaport: I mean, the medical community should know about you, Dalia.

00:11:08.389 --> 00:11:11.909
Jill Rappaport: Are they aware of what you've created and the benefits?

00:11:11.909 --> 00:11:19.189
Dalia MacPhee: Well, thanks to some of the work that I've done a lot more do know, but I mean, let's get the word out for sure.

00:11:19.189 --> 00:11:26.969
Dalia MacPhee: I worked with Children's National Hospital as well during COVID, and they asked me to do a new take on the isolation gown.

00:11:26.969 --> 00:11:29.789
Dalia MacPhee: So like I said, I like problem-solving.

00:11:29.789 --> 00:11:30.149
Jill Rappaport: Wow.

00:11:30.149 --> 00:11:31.889
Jill Rappaport: I want to partner with you on this.

00:11:31.889 --> 00:11:33.989
Jill Rappaport: I think you're really on to something great.

00:11:34.429 --> 00:11:38.129
Jill Rappaport: And what's amazing, your designs are so good-looking.

00:11:38.129 --> 00:11:42.949
Jill Rappaport: I know the Toronto Sun referred to you as the It Girl in the design world.

00:11:42.949 --> 00:11:49.489
Jill Rappaport: It's one thing to create something that has purpose and meaning and safety, but to be beautiful also.

00:11:49.489 --> 00:11:54.509
Jill Rappaport: You just have the knack of creating these amazing designs, which is what it's all about.

00:11:54.509 --> 00:11:57.289
Jill Rappaport: We want to feel great when we put something on.

00:11:57.289 --> 00:11:57.609
Dalia MacPhee: Yeah.

00:11:57.609 --> 00:11:59.929
Dalia MacPhee: I mean, that's what fashion is really, right?

00:11:59.929 --> 00:12:01.769
Dalia MacPhee: I call it the Superwoman cape.

00:12:02.369 --> 00:12:06.329
Dalia MacPhee: That's the idea is that we're taking the length that's inside and shining it outside.

00:12:06.329 --> 00:12:13.629
Dalia MacPhee: It doesn't really matter what you're wearing as long as it makes you feel at your optimum.

00:12:13.629 --> 00:12:16.749
Dalia MacPhee: But of course, I mean, I always want to make it as beautiful as possible.

00:12:16.749 --> 00:12:19.049
Jill Rappaport: What were some of your inspirations?

00:12:19.049 --> 00:12:21.129
Jill Rappaport: Who did you look up to in the design world?

00:12:21.189 --> 00:12:25.629
Jill Rappaport: Then I want to hear who you've worked with in terms of celebrities and people of influence.

00:12:25.629 --> 00:12:26.629
Dalia MacPhee: Oh my gosh.

00:12:26.629 --> 00:12:29.309
Dalia MacPhee: There's so many as far as designers.

00:12:29.429 --> 00:12:33.869
Dalia MacPhee: I think Valentino and Oscar DeLaurenta a lot for the gown world.

00:12:33.989 --> 00:12:37.449
Jill Rappaport: I got to interview Oscar DeLaurenta a few times.

00:12:37.449 --> 00:12:37.809
Dalia MacPhee: Wow.

00:12:37.809 --> 00:12:39.309
Dalia MacPhee: How was that?

00:12:39.309 --> 00:12:44.409
Jill Rappaport: The most classy, lovely, wonderful person.

00:12:44.409 --> 00:12:47.469
Jill Rappaport: I started out as a fashion reporter in my career.

00:12:47.469 --> 00:12:48.089
Jill Rappaport: Yes, that's right.

00:12:48.089 --> 00:12:55.589
Jill Rappaport: I started in Francisco decades ago and got to sit down with all the greats, including Karl Lagerfeld and Halston.

00:12:55.589 --> 00:12:56.369
Dalia MacPhee: Oh my gosh.

00:12:56.629 --> 00:13:00.189
Jill Rappaport: Yeah, and Ralph Lauren, I credit to kickstarting my career.

00:13:00.189 --> 00:13:05.649
Jill Rappaport: He really gave me the exclusive one-on-one interview which catapulted me into my first job.

00:13:05.649 --> 00:13:08.669
Jill Rappaport: He really got me the job by giving me the interview.

00:13:08.669 --> 00:13:09.369
Jill Rappaport: Yes.

00:13:09.369 --> 00:13:15.309
Dalia MacPhee: Well, it may end also a little bit of symmetry there with the horse connection.

00:13:15.369 --> 00:13:16.629
Jill Rappaport: Oh, absolutely.

00:13:16.629 --> 00:13:21.149
Jill Rappaport: I mean, and he's all about America and the animals and the beauty of the West.

00:13:21.149 --> 00:13:27.209
Jill Rappaport: And you can see I love the Southwest and I'm wearing a squash blossom necklace now, and I live in a log cabin.

00:13:27.209 --> 00:13:30.229
Jill Rappaport: And what about what you've done for animals?

00:13:30.229 --> 00:13:35.849
Jill Rappaport: Talk about your philanthropic work and how you've given back and how much you care.

00:13:35.849 --> 00:13:41.989
Jill Rappaport: And you're an accomplished equestrian, but you've also created something for horses that is truly life-saving.

00:13:41.989 --> 00:13:44.529
Jill Rappaport: And I've got to get from you, from my horses.

00:13:45.069 --> 00:13:45.449
Jill Rappaport: Yes.

00:13:45.449 --> 00:13:52.289
Dalia MacPhee: So, you know, my, my horse Wolfie, who's out in California, a couple of years, he's fine.

00:13:52.289 --> 00:13:54.049
Dalia MacPhee: First of all, we'll start with that.

00:13:54.049 --> 00:13:59.409
Dalia MacPhee: But a few years ago, Calabasas was on fire and I was out of town.

00:13:59.409 --> 00:14:05.729
Dalia MacPhee: And I remember a friend of mine, who's a news reporter who always gets to the news first, texts me and says, is Wolfie okay?

00:14:05.729 --> 00:14:07.309
Dalia MacPhee: So I, of course, I call her out.

00:14:07.309 --> 00:14:08.209
Dalia MacPhee: I go, what do you, what do you mean?

00:14:08.209 --> 00:14:08.989
Dalia MacPhee: Is Wolfie okay?

00:14:08.989 --> 00:14:09.929
Dalia MacPhee: What are you talking about?

00:14:09.929 --> 00:14:11.849
Jill Rappaport: What a horrible message to get, right?

00:14:12.969 --> 00:14:15.129
Dalia MacPhee: Well, Calabasas is on fire.

00:14:15.129 --> 00:14:19.509
Dalia MacPhee: And so I remembered, I called the stables and I said, oh my gosh, what's going on?

00:14:19.509 --> 00:14:22.229
Dalia MacPhee: And it's the worst feeling when you're out of town, right?

00:14:22.229 --> 00:14:22.909
Jill Rappaport: Yes.

00:14:22.909 --> 00:14:24.029
Dalia MacPhee: I said, what's going on?

00:14:24.029 --> 00:14:26.709
Dalia MacPhee: And they said that the fire is getting really close.

00:14:26.709 --> 00:14:31.349
Dalia MacPhee: It's starting to, you know, the stables are minimally starting to catch on fire.

00:14:31.349 --> 00:14:34.129
Dalia MacPhee: And I said, where are the evacuation trailers?

00:14:34.129 --> 00:14:36.409
Dalia MacPhee: Because we always have a plan for these things.

00:14:36.409 --> 00:14:40.009
Dalia MacPhee: And they said this fire department won't let them through.

00:14:40.009 --> 00:14:43.029
Dalia MacPhee: And this is, this is common, by the way, this happens a lot.

00:14:43.029 --> 00:14:47.689
Jill Rappaport: Yes, in California, the wildfires, one of the most frightening things.

00:14:47.689 --> 00:14:49.389
Dalia MacPhee: Right, so this happens often.

00:14:49.389 --> 00:14:53.089
Dalia MacPhee: So they said, we're hoping that they find a back road to get through.

00:14:53.089 --> 00:15:01.169
Dalia MacPhee: But in the meantime, we're here, and the fire department is here, and they're saying, post the horses down, so they burn slower or set them loose.

00:15:01.169 --> 00:15:05.009
Jill Rappaport: Oh, your heart must have been on the floor at that point.

00:15:05.009 --> 00:15:07.829
Dalia MacPhee: Yeah, it was, it was really heart wrenching.

00:15:07.829 --> 00:15:15.289
Dalia MacPhee: Thankfully, the evacuation trailers somehow found a back road and then got in, so all the horses were evacuated just in time.

00:15:15.289 --> 00:15:17.889
Dalia MacPhee: My horse was the last one.

00:15:17.889 --> 00:15:24.149
Dalia MacPhee: He didn't leave, I think, as he thought he was leaving me somehow, so he was the last one to get on.

00:15:24.149 --> 00:15:29.489
Dalia MacPhee: But you know, that's when the seed was planted a little bit, as they say, necessity is the mother of all invention.

00:15:29.489 --> 00:15:37.549
Dalia MacPhee: And then a year later was the Lilac Fire in San Diego, where hundreds of horses had to be set loose because fires were raging.

00:15:37.549 --> 00:15:39.349
Dalia MacPhee: I think it was the Delmar area.

00:15:39.349 --> 00:15:45.689
Dalia MacPhee: And horses were killed, other horses were severely burned, and took months to recuperate.

00:15:45.689 --> 00:15:48.169
Jill Rappaport: And here you are a clothing designer.

00:15:48.169 --> 00:16:01.249
Jill Rappaport: At that point, when your baby, your fur angel could have been in a life-threatening situation, was in a life-threatening situation, thank God made it, but that's what created, that's what went off the light bulb moment in your head.

00:16:01.249 --> 00:16:05.969
Dalia MacPhee: You know, I had personal friends on Facebook who were posting, have you seen my horse?

00:16:05.969 --> 00:16:07.729
Dalia MacPhee: Cause the horse is now missing.

00:16:07.729 --> 00:16:16.849
Dalia MacPhee: And as you and I know about a lot of public don't know, the horses that then are set loose, it's not just trying to find them and their safety and everything else.

00:16:16.849 --> 00:16:22.949
Dalia MacPhee: There are bad people out there that then pick them up and sell them to the auction houses to be set to be slaughtered.

00:16:22.949 --> 00:16:30.909
Dalia MacPhee: So I remember I was on the phone with a friend of mine and I said, how come no one's created a fully fired retire horse blanket with GPS?

00:16:30.909 --> 00:16:34.729
Dalia MacPhee: And there was a pause and she goes, well, why don't you?

00:16:34.729 --> 00:16:40.149
Dalia MacPhee: That's when I created the AquaSafe blanket, which is a fully fired retire horse blanket with built-in GPS.

00:16:40.149 --> 00:16:46.949
Dalia MacPhee: It's been endorsed by the fire chief of California and the fire captain of LA, and it's carried by SmartPak.

00:16:46.949 --> 00:16:52.509
Dalia MacPhee: I actually got them to order it by, I flew out and they said, we love this, we heard all about it.

00:16:52.509 --> 00:16:57.109
Dalia MacPhee: We know it was on the front of NBC, but we don't have room for nude brands right now.

00:16:57.109 --> 00:16:58.569
Dalia MacPhee: And I said, no problem.

00:16:58.569 --> 00:16:59.749
Dalia MacPhee: I brought up blowtorch.

00:16:59.869 --> 00:17:02.749
Dalia MacPhee: Do you want to watch me blowtorch the fabric over my arm?

00:17:02.749 --> 00:17:04.169
Jill Rappaport: Unbelievable.

00:17:04.169 --> 00:17:10.729
Jill Rappaport: Now, I hate to ask you, it's one of those things where you've created the most important thing, but you never want to see it put to use.

00:17:10.889 --> 00:17:15.209
Jill Rappaport: But has it actually been put to use and saved a horse?

00:17:15.209 --> 00:17:16.569
Dalia MacPhee: Not that I know of.

00:17:16.569 --> 00:17:19.329
Jill Rappaport: That's good, because we don't want to hear about those situations.

00:17:19.329 --> 00:17:20.509
Dalia MacPhee: Right, exactly.

00:17:20.509 --> 00:17:24.849
Dalia MacPhee: So, I mean, I think you only ever hear sometimes about the bad stories, right?

00:17:24.849 --> 00:17:25.289
Jill Rappaport: Right.

00:17:25.289 --> 00:17:36.889
Dalia MacPhee: It's been purchased all over the country, and I do know various people that have contacted me, saying, I put it on my horse when we put him in the evacuation trailer, which is also another use for it, right?

00:17:36.889 --> 00:17:49.409
Dalia MacPhee: Because this is in a worst-case scenario where you have to set your horse loose, but it's also in scenarios where the horse is being put in a trailer and they're being evacuated because they could be burned from falling embers.

00:17:49.409 --> 00:17:54.089
Dalia MacPhee: There's also second and third-degree burns that can occur from close proximity to heat.

00:17:54.549 --> 00:18:00.169
Jill Rappaport: So it's not just a blanket, you actually have a hood that covers the neck and the head, everything.

00:18:00.169 --> 00:18:01.349
Jill Rappaport: It's a full body.

00:18:01.349 --> 00:18:11.189
Dalia MacPhee: Yeah, and someone came up with a cheeky, there's always people that come out and try to poo poo ideas and so on and say, well, how can you haven't done it for all the legs?

00:18:11.769 --> 00:18:15.649
Dalia MacPhee: I said, well, first of all, I have that, we could do the legs.

00:18:15.649 --> 00:18:30.329
Dalia MacPhee: But I spoke with enough vets and saw enough from prior circumstances of where the areas that the horse has the most pain when they're burned and take the longest to recuperate.

00:18:30.329 --> 00:18:34.829
Dalia MacPhee: Constantly came back with the flanks, the top of the back, the neck.

00:18:34.829 --> 00:18:38.809
Dalia MacPhee: So it was most important to me to create that first.

00:18:38.809 --> 00:18:40.389
Dalia MacPhee: I have something for the legs as well.

00:18:40.389 --> 00:18:45.989
Dalia MacPhee: But sometimes in an emergency, all you can do is throw a blanket on, and anything is better than nothing.

00:18:45.989 --> 00:18:50.669
Jill Rappaport: Well, I know firemen have it, but what about just in our own homes?

00:18:50.669 --> 00:18:54.129
Jill Rappaport: Should we have that protective gear for humans as well?

00:18:54.129 --> 00:18:56.889
Jill Rappaport: Are you developing that as we speak?

00:18:56.889 --> 00:18:59.029
Dalia MacPhee: I definitely think so.

00:18:59.029 --> 00:19:03.849
Dalia MacPhee: By creating the blanket, one of the important things to me was to make it affordable.

00:19:03.849 --> 00:19:04.889
Dalia MacPhee: I made it very affordable.

00:19:04.889 --> 00:19:07.269
Dalia MacPhee: It's also environmentally friendly.

00:19:07.269 --> 00:19:17.469
Dalia MacPhee: In creating the solution to make it fire-retardant and environmentally friendly, I accidentally created something that can be used as a fire retardant in the home.

00:19:18.209 --> 00:19:21.129
Dalia MacPhee: So it's one of my next products that I'm releasing.

00:19:21.129 --> 00:19:22.369
Dalia MacPhee: It's called Burnout.

00:19:22.369 --> 00:19:25.389
Dalia MacPhee: And it's a new take on the fire extinguisher.

00:19:25.389 --> 00:19:30.129
Dalia MacPhee: So if I asked you how to use a fire extinguisher, chances are you may know.

00:19:31.189 --> 00:19:32.289
Jill Rappaport: No, forget it.

00:19:32.289 --> 00:19:33.269
Jill Rappaport: That's what's so scary.

00:19:33.269 --> 00:19:34.449
Jill Rappaport: So I want to hear about this.

00:19:34.449 --> 00:19:37.649
Dalia MacPhee: In an emergency, you know, there's so many things to think about.

00:19:37.649 --> 00:19:39.129
Dalia MacPhee: They have to be maintained.

00:19:39.129 --> 00:19:44.369
Dalia MacPhee: So this fits in something that looks like a water bottle and it breaks on impact, but it doesn't shard.

00:19:44.969 --> 00:19:47.609
Dalia MacPhee: And so all you have to know how to do is throw.

00:19:47.609 --> 00:19:49.209
Jill Rappaport: That I can do.

00:19:49.209 --> 00:19:50.269
Jill Rappaport: That I'm good at.

00:19:50.269 --> 00:19:50.949
Jill Rappaport: Wait a second.

00:19:50.949 --> 00:19:52.349
Jill Rappaport: When are you coming out with this?

00:19:52.349 --> 00:19:54.329
Jill Rappaport: And when are you sending me samples?

00:19:54.329 --> 00:19:56.029
Dalia MacPhee: I'm going to send you samples of everything.

00:19:56.029 --> 00:19:56.729
Dalia MacPhee: Don't you worry.

00:19:56.729 --> 00:20:02.589
Jill Rappaport: I just love that, you know, first of all, what you're doing is just, you know, the old V8, the commercial.

00:20:02.589 --> 00:20:03.929
Jill Rappaport: I should have had a V8.

00:20:03.929 --> 00:20:05.449
Jill Rappaport: It's the same idea.

00:20:05.449 --> 00:20:06.609
Jill Rappaport: Why didn't I think of this?

00:20:06.609 --> 00:20:07.029
Jill Rappaport: Right.

00:20:07.029 --> 00:20:10.769
Jill Rappaport: These are such important, wonderful ideas, Dalia.

00:20:10.769 --> 00:20:11.229
Dalia MacPhee: Thank you.

00:20:11.229 --> 00:20:16.169
Dalia MacPhee: Well, to me, this was really also just to have something that is non-toxic.

00:20:16.169 --> 00:20:23.369
Dalia MacPhee: But, you know, it's funny because during COVID, I actually had some necessities delivered to me by a drone.

00:20:23.369 --> 00:20:25.609
Dalia MacPhee: There was a company doing this, right?

00:20:25.609 --> 00:20:27.689
Dalia MacPhee: And so it was the craziest thing.

00:20:27.689 --> 00:20:29.529
Dalia MacPhee: And I was like, I gotta see how this works.

00:20:29.529 --> 00:20:30.309
Dalia MacPhee: This is crazy.

00:20:30.309 --> 00:20:34.229
Dalia MacPhee: How did, you know, how did they get the permission to do this and everything?

00:20:34.229 --> 00:20:41.429
Dalia MacPhee: And as they get closer and they're like two minutes away, they tell you to go outside and then you're on your cell phone and they're like, is it over you?

00:20:41.429 --> 00:20:42.309
Dalia MacPhee: Is it over you?

00:20:42.309 --> 00:20:42.749
Dalia MacPhee: Is it over?

00:20:42.869 --> 00:20:44.209
Dalia MacPhee: Yeah, okay, it's over me.

00:20:44.209 --> 00:20:44.829
Dalia MacPhee: Okay.

00:20:44.829 --> 00:20:47.969
Dalia MacPhee: And they hit a button and the bag drops and you catch it.

00:20:47.969 --> 00:20:56.789
Dalia MacPhee: And immediately I was like, wait a second, we could take burnout and put it in large bottles and send drones out into wildfires and drop it.

00:20:56.789 --> 00:21:02.389
Dalia MacPhee: So that's my big dream is to just figure out solutions for the wildfires.

00:21:02.389 --> 00:21:09.189
Dalia MacPhee: You know, I'm chatting with some of the powers that be to see if that is something that we should start testing and move forward with.

00:21:09.429 --> 00:21:24.429
Jill Rappaport: And it seems like, I mean, obviously, fashion is first in your life, but it seems like you're really going in this direction of life-saving products, because that seems to be where your heart is, what you can do to really make a difference to save lives.

00:21:24.429 --> 00:21:32.249
Dalia MacPhee: To save lives and of course, being an animal lover to improve animals' lives, save animals' lives and to improve their lives.

00:21:32.249 --> 00:21:37.089
Dalia MacPhee: You know, I looked at everything that we have for humans and how far we've come with technology.

00:21:37.289 --> 00:21:41.349
Dalia MacPhee: And my thought always is, why don't we make this burn at all?

00:21:41.349 --> 00:21:44.469
Dalia MacPhee: You know, like they can't speak and they've given us so much.

00:21:44.469 --> 00:21:47.849
Dalia MacPhee: So that's one of my number one missions.

00:21:47.849 --> 00:21:49.869
Jill Rappaport: Well, tell me about the animals in your life.

00:21:49.869 --> 00:21:51.769
Jill Rappaport: I know about your beloved horse.

00:21:51.769 --> 00:21:59.529
Jill Rappaport: And I know you're very involved with the wonderful campaign that I also have partaked in called Steen Through Horses.

00:21:59.529 --> 00:22:05.109
Jill Rappaport: Tell me all about your commitment, your compassion to all animals.

00:22:05.109 --> 00:22:06.429
Dalia MacPhee: I have a new rescue now.

00:22:06.609 --> 00:22:09.829
Dalia MacPhee: Her name is Lily, and she's a Border Collie mix.

00:22:09.829 --> 00:22:10.769
Jill Rappaport: I saw a picture.

00:22:10.769 --> 00:22:13.069
Jill Rappaport: Lily is beautiful.

00:22:13.069 --> 00:22:17.009
Dalia MacPhee: And so prior to Lily, I had my dog Daisy.

00:22:17.009 --> 00:22:18.509
Dalia MacPhee: She actually looked identical to her.

00:22:18.509 --> 00:22:21.629
Dalia MacPhee: So the story of how I got Lily is just kind of crazy.

00:22:21.629 --> 00:22:23.589
Dalia MacPhee: She just appeared out of nowhere.

00:22:23.589 --> 00:22:24.969
Dalia MacPhee: I don't think there's any accidents.

00:22:24.969 --> 00:22:26.609
Dalia MacPhee: I think our animals find us.

00:22:26.609 --> 00:22:27.209
Jill Rappaport: That's right.

00:22:27.209 --> 00:22:27.909
Jill Rappaport: They really do.

00:22:27.909 --> 00:22:34.389
Jill Rappaport: And each one, when you see the personality, the ones that I've rescued, I think to myself, they could have only ended up with me.

00:22:34.969 --> 00:22:38.009
Jill Rappaport: It's just a match made in heaven for both of us.

00:22:38.009 --> 00:22:39.629
Jill Rappaport: And I totally agree with that.

00:22:39.629 --> 00:22:51.969
Jill Rappaport: But you know, the more you're talking about how much you love your dogs and your horse, is this something that would be a full-time profession for you down the road where you maybe design clothing for animals, not just safety clothing?

00:22:51.969 --> 00:22:53.109
Dalia MacPhee: Absolutely.

00:22:53.109 --> 00:22:57.789
Dalia MacPhee: I already have a second division under Dalia MacPhee, and it's all for pets.

00:22:57.789 --> 00:22:59.209
Jill Rappaport: Oh, great.

00:22:59.209 --> 00:23:03.889
Dalia MacPhee: There's already products that have been released, and there are a lot more products to look forward to.

00:23:04.529 --> 00:23:10.829
Dalia MacPhee: Some of the products that have been released are, I came out with a dog version of the fire retardant blanket that's been released.

00:23:10.829 --> 00:23:18.469
Dalia MacPhee: It's called the PetSafe Fire Retardant Jacket for Dogs with GPS, because we can't forget about them in wildfires.

00:23:18.469 --> 00:23:21.629
Dalia MacPhee: And then I also have a heated puff jacket for dogs.

00:23:21.629 --> 00:23:24.269
Dalia MacPhee: So it looks beautiful, very fashionable.

00:23:24.269 --> 00:23:31.049
Dalia MacPhee: It's a puff jacket, but it has eight hours of heat, and it's wireless, so you can throw it in the washing machine.

00:23:31.049 --> 00:23:39.409
Dalia MacPhee: The only wire is the one that connects to the battery, so there's no wire, so no EMF running through the whole dog's body, which is great.

00:23:39.409 --> 00:23:41.549
Dalia MacPhee: I have a heated bed for dogs.

00:23:41.549 --> 00:23:44.269
Dalia MacPhee: I have a bed that has air conditioning for dogs.

00:23:44.369 --> 00:23:46.309
Jill Rappaport: Oh my gosh.

00:23:46.349 --> 00:23:50.249
Jill Rappaport: I did not know this, but I'm getting all your products.

00:23:50.249 --> 00:23:52.109
Jill Rappaport: An air conditioned bed.

00:23:52.109 --> 00:23:56.649
Dalia MacPhee: Jill's making a list of all the samples she wants right now.

00:23:56.649 --> 00:23:58.849
Jill Rappaport: When I have seen this, is it online?

00:23:58.849 --> 00:24:01.429
Jill Rappaport: The air conditioned bed and the heated dog coat?

00:24:01.429 --> 00:24:03.729
Dalia MacPhee: This is a little bit stealth, to be honest with you.

00:24:03.949 --> 00:24:09.149
Dalia MacPhee: So I'm giving you kind of first-hand info, but it's to be released.

00:24:09.149 --> 00:24:13.529
Jill Rappaport: I would have thought, oh, I didn't do my homework because I haven't seen that stuff anywhere, Dalia.

00:24:13.529 --> 00:24:14.549
Dalia MacPhee: No, not yet.

00:24:14.549 --> 00:24:20.869
Dalia MacPhee: What I call the denim products, which are just more fashionable jackets and things like that, you may have seen.

00:24:20.869 --> 00:24:26.469
Dalia MacPhee: I've already released a lot of those, but the more innovative this is, you're kind of getting firsthand.

00:24:26.469 --> 00:24:39.929
Jill Rappaport: Well, I'll tell you, you are blowing me away with your intelligence, your creativity, and your knowledge, and the ability to come up not only with these ideas, but to actually create them.

00:24:39.929 --> 00:24:45.189
Jill Rappaport: And you know they're making a difference for angels, which is so important.

00:24:45.189 --> 00:24:47.649
Jill Rappaport: I'll tell you, I want to work with you on all of these things.

00:24:47.649 --> 00:24:50.509
Jill Rappaport: You are truly incredible.

00:24:50.509 --> 00:24:56.949
Jill Rappaport: Yes, because again, I'm all about rescue and adoption, and I see what's going on in the world right now.

00:24:56.949 --> 00:25:11.729
Jill Rappaport: It is so dire, and any way we can help them, any product, any message, any clothing, any story, we have to get the message out there to raise awareness, so people know to get out there now and take an animal home.

00:25:11.729 --> 00:25:21.129
Dalia MacPhee: Well, you know, it's so funny that you'd sent that because I have a news piece coming up, and they wanted to chat about the moon landing and just, you know, spring fashion and whatnot.

00:25:21.129 --> 00:25:24.649
Dalia MacPhee: And of course, I'm trying to tie in animals any way I can.

00:25:24.649 --> 00:25:31.829
Dalia MacPhee: And I'd said, you know what, Mother's Day, why don't we do a rescue pups looking for their mom?

00:25:31.829 --> 00:25:37.089
Dalia MacPhee: And we'll dress my models in my dresses, or I now have a pajama collection.

00:25:37.089 --> 00:25:40.089
Dalia MacPhee: So we'll dress them in something that is current.

00:25:40.089 --> 00:25:47.289
Dalia MacPhee: And we'll dress the adoptable dog in something matching, and try to get these animals homes for Mother's Day.

00:25:47.289 --> 00:25:52.589
Dalia MacPhee: Because, you know, every opportunity that we have to do something, let's do it.

00:25:52.589 --> 00:25:54.049
Jill Rappaport: That is such a great idea.

00:25:54.049 --> 00:25:56.369
Jill Rappaport: Just reaching out for their next mom, you know?

00:25:56.809 --> 00:26:02.329
Dalia MacPhee: Well, I remember reading this story about this cute little kid who started creating bow ties.

00:26:02.329 --> 00:26:03.949
Jill Rappaport: Sir Darius Brown.

00:26:03.949 --> 00:26:05.209
Jill Rappaport: Yes, he's my friend.

00:26:05.209 --> 00:26:06.449
Jill Rappaport: He's been on the podcast.

00:26:06.449 --> 00:26:08.669
Jill Rappaport: I put him on my show in Dog Bowl.

00:26:08.669 --> 00:26:15.169
Jill Rappaport: I've known him since he was very, very young and was a little boy, and now he's over six feet tall.

00:26:15.169 --> 00:26:16.489
Dalia MacPhee: That's so great.

00:26:16.489 --> 00:26:16.949
Jill Rappaport: Yeah, he's great.

00:26:16.949 --> 00:26:18.949
Dalia MacPhee: What a great human to do that.

00:26:18.949 --> 00:26:20.069
Dalia MacPhee: It reminds you, right?

00:26:20.069 --> 00:26:25.249
Dalia MacPhee: Like you look at that and you go, yeah, like there's so many amazing dogs that don't have homes.

00:26:25.809 --> 00:26:37.049
Dalia MacPhee: Try when you can, even if you're looking for a purebred, try to just put it out there to find one in the shelters, because I guarantee whatever you're looking for is out there, or better than what you're looking for.

00:26:37.049 --> 00:26:39.149
Dalia MacPhee: But there's so many animals that need homes.

00:26:39.149 --> 00:26:45.289
Jill Rappaport: So many, and I try to create my own products, my toy Shelter Shake, which has been featured on national TV.

00:26:45.289 --> 00:26:46.129
Jill Rappaport: Dogs love it.

00:26:46.129 --> 00:26:49.249
Jill Rappaport: And again, it's the messaging, you know, it's Shelter Shake.

00:26:49.249 --> 00:26:59.569
Jill Rappaport: Anytime I have a line of leashes and collars with all rescue and adoption, mindful sayings, because, you know, people, when they rescue and adopt, they did it out of the goodness of their heart.

00:26:59.569 --> 00:27:00.969
Jill Rappaport: They saved a life in turn.

00:27:00.969 --> 00:27:01.749
Jill Rappaport: They've been saved.

00:27:01.749 --> 00:27:07.729
Jill Rappaport: But the best thing about it, you and I both know that people like to have bragging rights.

00:27:07.729 --> 00:27:10.229
Jill Rappaport: You know, they like to say, I rescued that dog.

00:27:10.229 --> 00:27:11.509
Jill Rappaport: I made a difference.

00:27:11.509 --> 00:27:12.669
Jill Rappaport: It makes you feel good.

00:27:12.669 --> 00:27:17.349
Jill Rappaport: And so my leashes have sayings like, I'm a heart melter from a shelter.

00:27:17.369 --> 00:27:18.889
Jill Rappaport: I'm a pound pooch.

00:27:18.889 --> 00:27:20.089
Jill Rappaport: Bless you for my rescue.

00:27:20.609 --> 00:27:22.309
Dalia MacPhee: That's a slender.

00:27:22.309 --> 00:27:26.509
Jill Rappaport: So they're sporting mindful messages and people are proud to display them.

00:27:26.509 --> 00:27:27.489
Jill Rappaport: They're for a good cause.

00:27:27.489 --> 00:27:30.289
Jill Rappaport: Proceeds go back to helping animals in need.

00:27:30.289 --> 00:27:37.409
Jill Rappaport: But I have to tell you, Dalia, of all my guests in terms of creativity, you are just blowing me away.

00:27:37.409 --> 00:27:38.729
Jill Rappaport: You are amazing.

00:27:38.729 --> 00:27:40.909
Dalia MacPhee: Can I get that sound bite?

00:27:40.909 --> 00:27:42.509
Dalia MacPhee: I'll take it.

00:27:42.509 --> 00:27:44.729
Jill Rappaport: You can use it quoted by me, yes.

00:27:44.729 --> 00:27:46.569
Dalia MacPhee: That makes me think, thank you.

00:27:46.689 --> 00:27:49.749
Jill Rappaport: And what you've created in the fashion world, that that wasn't enough.

00:27:49.929 --> 00:27:58.729
Jill Rappaport: And then what I read about you, and heard all that you're doing for Animals in Need, and how big your heart is for our four-legged friends.

00:27:58.729 --> 00:28:01.529
Jill Rappaport: I just knew that we would be bonded for life.

00:28:01.529 --> 00:28:02.089
Dalia MacPhee: I agree.

00:28:02.089 --> 00:28:02.529
Dalia MacPhee: Yeah, no.

00:28:02.709 --> 00:28:05.449
Dalia MacPhee: And I think we need to create something together.

00:28:05.449 --> 00:28:06.809
Jill Rappaport: Oh, absolutely.

00:28:06.809 --> 00:28:10.489
Jill Rappaport: As they say in the business, we'll talk.

00:28:10.489 --> 00:28:12.649
Jill Rappaport: After this podcast, we will talk.

00:28:12.649 --> 00:28:14.849
Jill Rappaport: But I'm so happy to have you here.

00:28:14.849 --> 00:28:16.549
Jill Rappaport: You are incredible.

00:28:16.549 --> 00:28:29.689
Jill Rappaport: What you've done, what you're doing, and really just an inspiration for not only all designers out there, but all young people listening to this, knowing what you can do, what you can create.

00:28:29.689 --> 00:28:34.209
Jill Rappaport: Because in the end, it's one thing to be talented and successful.

00:28:34.209 --> 00:28:38.209
Jill Rappaport: But isn't it about what we leave behind and what we do for others?

00:28:38.209 --> 00:28:38.609
Dalia MacPhee: 100%.

00:28:39.009 --> 00:28:39.729
Dalia MacPhee: I agree.

00:28:39.729 --> 00:28:41.509
Jill Rappaport: And you are really leading your mark.

00:28:41.509 --> 00:28:42.449
Jill Rappaport: Let me tell you.

00:28:42.449 --> 00:28:43.209
Dalia MacPhee: Thank you.

00:28:43.209 --> 00:28:47.909
Jill Rappaport: Dalia MacPhee, thank you so much for being on Rappaport to the Rescue.

00:28:48.149 --> 00:28:49.149
Jill Rappaport: I have learned so much.

00:28:49.149 --> 00:28:54.929
Jill Rappaport: I cannot wait to see and get all of these products for my own, fur angels.

00:28:54.929 --> 00:28:56.869
Jill Rappaport: And really, it was a pleasure.

00:28:56.869 --> 00:29:02.469
Jill Rappaport: And thank you to all of you who have tuned in today to Rappaport to the Rescue.
