Jill Rappaport [00:00:00]:
Hi, welcome to Rappaport to the Rescue. I am Jill Rappaport. So thrilled to be back with a brand new season of new podcasts for you to listen to. And boy, do we have a stellar guest lineup. Stars in the worlds of music, film, fashion, you name it. But the one common denominator is their need to save animals in need. So incredible line up. Cannot wait to tell you about it.

Jill Rappaport [00:00:27]:
And I want to tell you a little about what I've been up to the last few months to try to make a difference for animals in need. I woke up one day in the middle of November reading all of these horrific stories on the Internet, seeing shelters closing down right and left, talking to my rescue friends about how many animals were being euthanized because nobody was taking them. And hearing that this is the worst it's been in decades. It literally broke my heart to the point where I couldn't sleep. And I thought, what can I do in my world, in my area, to make a difference? So I literally picked up the phone to Southampton Animal Shelter and I said, what's going on there and what can I do to help? And they said it was really dire and the situation was as bad as what we'd been reading. And I said, okay, give me all of your underdogs, show me the ones that have been sitting there the longest. And I am going to do a campaign called a home for the holidays. This was right before Thanksgiving, and I want to do videos with these dogs to feature them, to see if we can get them out, get them into a wonderful, loving home, which is what they deserve.

Jill Rappaport [00:01:37]:
So this started on November 15. I only featured seniors, special needs and pit bulls. Some have been sitting there three quarters of their lives. One was there over two years. And I knew I had my work cut out for me because rescue and adoption are so down right now, and I was taking the ones that nobody wanted. So I went in, shot my first videos and we put them all over social media. Well, fast forward, Christmas Day comes New Year's and now we're into a home for after the holidays because I am determined to get every single one of these dogs a home. And out of the 18 underdogs that I have featured, 14 have now found their forever loving home.

Jill Rappaport [00:02:24]:
And I don't care how long it takes, I don't care if I go into the summer. I have four left. And I shoot new videos every week. Hopefully you can check that out on my social media or on Southampton Animal Shelter foundation website. We will get them a home. I am committed so this just gives me such joy to know that in my small way, I was able to do something. And that's my message to all of you. Anybody can help.

Jill Rappaport [00:02:52]:
It doesn't matter what you do or how you do it, but if you do something, you can make a difference. Whether it's volunteering, donating your time, writing a check, or posting a video about an animal that touched your heart, that has been sitting in a shelter, please do your part to make a difference. Now, coming up, someone who has truly made a difference in animal welfare. She's also a businesswoman extraordinaire and an incredible human being. My friend, Dylan Lauren, when we come back.

Welcome back to Rappaport to the Rescue. I'm Jill Rappaport. So excited to have my dear friend back today, the one and only Dylan Lauren.

Jill Rappaport [00:04:11]:
Now, in 2001, Dylan, daughter of one of the most influential people and designers in the world, Ralph Lauren set out to create a candy empire. And boy, did she ever. Dylan's Candy Bar was born, and the world is a much sweeter place because of it. With multiple locations nationwide, Dylan puts her creative, delicious mark on everything. And along with her soaring career, she's also a wonderful wife and mom to twins Kingsley Rainbow and Cooper Blue. But the connection, the bond that solidified our friendship is her deep commitment and devotion to animal welfare. She's always encouraging and promoting rescue and adoption. And just in time for Easter, she is a leading voice encouraging people to rescue rabbits.

Jill Rappaport [00:05:04]:
Dylan, so excited to have you back on the show. I have a little bit of information for you that I think you're going to love. Mark Winter, the founder and creator of Pet Life Radio, just told me that where you were on the show last, which would you believe was in July 2020 in the height of COVID that to this day, after all of my star guests, your show is the one that is still the most listened to.

Dylan Lauren [00:05:30]:
Really? Wow, that's so nice to hear. What a compliment. Yes, that's so nice. And by the way, it felt like yesterday, even though the 2020 was not something I need to want to remember, but I remember distinctly, you were very good at helping these animals, who you were the one to say, a lot of them are getting adopted, but a lot of them are going to be returned or not be able to be taken care of. Because if things start up again, you are predicting it. And you're right.

Jill Rappaport [00:06:03]:
And in the open of the show, before leading into you, I talked about this whole campaign I started with Southampton Animal Shelter, called a home for the holidays and now a home for after the holidays, which I went and literally focused on all of their underdogs because as you know, Dylan, right now in 2024, rescue and adoption is the worst it's been in decades.

Dylan Lauren [00:06:25]:
Yeah, it's very upsetting and it's almost shocking because you think all these animals are finding homes. But if it's the worst it's been, it's disastrous.

Jill Rappaport [00:06:35]:
And we're doing whatever we can to try to make a difference. And I know that you have beautiful Jersey.

Dylan Lauren [00:06:41]:
How is she doing? She's great. She is a rescue from Puerto Rico. And I can't tell you how many people stop me on the street and say, oh my God, your dog's so beautiful. Where is she from? And I say, oh, she's a rescue. And even with that, they're like, really? Oh my God. And it's like she's been a great role model for people and she's twelve years old. I hope she lives very long life. But it always makes me nervous as our pets age.

Dylan Lauren [00:07:07]:
But they're still the best, these animal friends.

Jill Rappaport [00:07:12]:
I always say it's who rescued who, literally, right?

Dylan Lauren [00:07:15]:
Oh my God. Yes. I have a photo with the frame that says who rescued who? And I gave it to my husband who. It has a picture of Jersey. And then he's like, I don't know. I think she rescued us.

Jill Rappaport [00:07:27]:
And what people might not know about you besides your love of all things animals, the one animal that stands out. And I just find it so adorable because you were really one of the first to raise awareness for the bunnies. The rabbits talk about your love of these pets and what you're doing to make a difference in their lives.

Dylan Lauren [00:07:47]:
I love rabbits. Besides all animals, rabbits have been my favorite animal since I was probably like five or six. My dad came home from a trip with a stuffed animal rabbit and then before he knew it, I had 3000 rabbits stuffed animals in my collection. And then I had two real bunnies, Chocolate and Vanilla, who I've named my store mascots after. When you walk in the Dylan's candy bar store, you'll see chocolate, the rabbit, giant chocolate rabbit. And we did this great thing this year of the rabbit for all about rabbits rescue. And we've helped all these rabbits get homes because as much as dogs and cats make great pets and other animals, so do bunnies. And I know firsthand from having them how many rabbits need to be adopted as well.

Dylan Lauren [00:08:37]:
So we've done a lot of ecommerce photo shoots incorporating the rabbits that are adoptable and proceeds from some of our candy products, especially the chocolate vanilla related ones, also benefit all about rabbits rescue, because they definitely need homes, too.

Jill Rappaport [00:08:54]:
And you were one of the first well known, high profile people to focus on rabbits?

Dylan Lauren [00:09:01]:
I think so. I believe there's a few people out there who love rabbits in the world of design and know, like Hans Sloanum. He does a lot with rabbit paintings and there's a few others, but I'm definitely one who is obsessed, I would say, with helping bunnies. And just rabbits are just so cute and they're really great. They live a while as house pets, or they could be outside certain climates, and they really have personalities that are like dogs and cats and just funny. They're great. And I highly recommend people go to all about rabbits rescue to get a rabbit because people who are fostering them, work with them, really take good care of them, and they're great pets from there on on. You have a trained bunny, too.

Jill Rappaport [00:09:46]:
And who knew that rabbit rescue and adoption was such a dire cause as well that there were so many in need of a home?

Dylan Lauren [00:09:54]:
Yeah. Especially after Easter. It's always concerning people get given rabbits, I've heard, and they get them as an Easter gift, and then someone's like, I don't know how to take care of it, and they let them go free in the wild. But domesticated rabbits are not necessarily as comfortable in the wild and definitely need to be given to people who can handle it. And they're so easy. I mean, look, they get potty trained. I trained chocolate and vanilla so fast, they went to the bathroom in their little cages. They could run around the house.

Dylan Lauren [00:10:25]:
Mine ate Oreo cookies, which probably wasn't the healthiest, but that was a way to get them in their crates at night. But they were like best friends. And the rabbits, as long as you have two females or maybe two males, they do procreate. But they could be spayed or neutered, or you can just have a bunch that live together as just pets that love other animals. If they're brought up at the same time, they're amazing.

Jill Rappaport [00:10:50]:
Well, you're amazing with this initiative and with Easter coming up. This is such a crucial message.

Dylan Lauren [00:10:56]:
Totally crucial message. I mean, rabbits are iconic during Easter, but they're not only Easter, they're year round. I mean, certainly our mascot, chocolate vanilla, we have rabbits on our products for candy year round because that product gets used to also help all animals. But I think rabbits shouldn't be thought of as just pets that you take care of on Easter day. And then you kind of discard them. They're major parts of our lives, I can tell you for sure. Chocolate, vanilla and my 3000 rabbit stuffed animal collection has been a big part of my life and my inspiration and almost like a spirit animal to me. Rabbits are fast and fun and I just love them.

Jill Rappaport [00:11:36]:
Well, talk about an inspiration. Growing up as the daughter of one of the most iconic design figures, one of the most amazing people in the world of fashion, Ralph Lauren. And I understand when you were a child, your dad, Ralph Lauren and your amazing mom, Ricky screened at one of your birthday parties, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the film that took you down this sweet confectionery lane. Tell us about that.

Dylan Lauren [00:12:04]:
Correct. When I was about six that my parents showed us at my birthday party, that movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. And I got to tell you, I've seen it probably 50 times since that the original I'm talking about, obviously, I've seen all the recreations, but Gene Wilder was so amazing. And the set designs of that movie inspired my store's Dylan's candy bar. I wanted to live in the set of Willy Wonka's factory, who does amazing. And I mean, it is just so inspiring to me with the color and the sort of messaging of pure imagination and just the idea that you can live in this colorful world of oversized candies. And that's how Dylan's candy bar fixtures got developed. I'd watch the movie again and create the lollipop tree and the candy cane columns that anchor the candy product.

Dylan Lauren [00:12:58]:
But it was so inspiring to, you.

Jill Rappaport [00:13:01]:
Know, to look at you, everybody that knows you, you're absolutely beautiful. You are so thin and fit and people might not know that you actually consume some of your delicious candy every single day, because to look at you, you wouldn't believe that.

Dylan Lauren [00:13:16]:
Well, I think that candy makes the.

Jill Rappaport [00:13:19]:
World go round and makes dentists very happy.

Dylan Lauren [00:13:23]:
Oh, yeah. But here's the thing. Everything in moderation, as long as you brush your teeth from anything, as long as you have your protein with your sugar, balance the blood sugar and you work out. It's very important to me. We're talking about rabbits being athletic outdoor animals. I relate to them. They run a lot. I like to run.

Dylan Lauren [00:13:40]:
I like to hike. I like to be outdoors. And I just think it's one of my favorite things. I like candy not only to eat, though, but to look at. It's so beautiful. The wrapping, the colors, the different holidays bring on different candies and different shapes. So it just makes me happy. And so I don't think it's good to get rid of things completely.

Dylan Lauren [00:14:00]:
Even if there's challenges with sugar, I personally try to balance it with the protein I mentioned and eat healthy most of the time and everything in moderation, as I said.

Jill Rappaport [00:14:11]:
Well, to walk into a Dylan's Candy Bar, whether it be a store or at the airport, anytime you're around one of your shops, it's truly like being in a fantasy.

Dylan Lauren [00:14:22]:
Thank you. Yeah, no, I'm very proud of our stores and going back to the animal part of it. I'm really excited about having stores as a place where families want to come, including their family members, which are furry friends. They can't come in, but they could come by. And we have in the past done several adoption events and we will continue to do that in stores that have outdoor spaces because people get concerned about going to shelters. So if we could use our magical settings as a place where people can feel comfortable to meet their potential new family member, we'll have worked with different animal adoption places to bring them to you, basically, and we'll keep you posted when the next ones are. We definitely will probably be doing something in our Hampton location with ArF, possibly. But all about rabbits rescue for this year of the Rabbit has been something we've been doing more so where we publicize when the events are and we show the rabbits on our website, and then you could go meet the rabbits at the various adoption sites.

Dylan Lauren [00:15:27]:
So it's been great.

Jill Rappaport [00:15:28]:
And the one thing I noticed when I first went into one of your stores, obviously, you inherited that incredible flair for design, for just walking into a store and being mesmerized with color and size and shape. The apple did not fall far from the tree, or I should say the candy bar didn't fall far from the tree with your father because. Unbelievable. Your ability and your knack and your creativity for design.

Dylan Lauren [00:15:57]:
Thank you. And I know you know my parents, and we're one of the first to be interviewing my dad, and I appreciate that hearing it from you. Yeah. I think both my parents having a design and artistic background and a real attention to detail like colors and every shade of every color and proportions and creating environments. I mean, my dad's Ralph Lauren stores are just know, you go in and you're transported into a different era or different culture, and then the clothes are themed around that. And that always inspired me with Dylan's Candy Bar, to create stores that you can walk into and be transported into an escape from wherever you are, into a candy know, with, like, oversized candy installations. And every season, there's always something new. Some colors are different, it's very themed, and it's different, and it's a nice, happy escape.

Jill Rappaport [00:16:52]:
And I love that you went into this line of work knowing your father. I mean, we talked about this over the years. He was my very first interview left an indelible mark on my life and career. Your mother is one of the most wonderful, beautiful human beings you'll ever meet. Your brothers are incredible. Coming from a fashion empire, you could have been very different. And many families grow up with incredible privilege and do turn out different, but you and your siblings are just incredibly grounded.

Dylan Lauren [00:17:21]:
Thank you. I really appreciate that. I think my parents have been very true to who they are. My dad grew up in humble beginnings and turned a tie into a lifestyle brand, but always sort of remembered to be close to his family and our family, his brothers and sisters as well. He's still close with, and I think family is very grounding and friends. So you kind of need to remember to have that support system around you. And also, it's important. Like, I love that I can do what I love.

Dylan Lauren [00:17:53]:
I love candy. As you know, I love animals. So I love being able to have the philanthropic edge. And I feel like when I'm working with candy, eating candy, it's like I'm sharing a passion with so many people who love candy, but also appreciate they might not know the subconscious psychological thing that colors and nostalgia of candy and the flavors and the smells and the candy songs we play, it brings you back to a place that is a very happy place, I think, for most people, even when you're a kid or an adult. So, like you said, merging fashion, pop culture, and art with candy is like, our mission is it's not just about how it tastes.

Jill Rappaport [00:18:33]:
It's about that we all have incredible memories. I can still remember Mary Jane's and losing half my fillings eating them. And I'm looking for Mary Jane's again. Didn't you tell me at one time you were going to have a Mary Jane type of candy or the original in your store?

Dylan Lauren [00:18:48]:
We have a whole nostalgia section, and you'll be happy. This summer, we're doing, like, a nostalgic sort of road trip theme in our stores. So we will be having all of the Americana classics, including Mary Jane's. I have to send you some. Yeah, that is a definite favorite. We also will have t shirts with vintage logos of the original candy wrappers. A lot of people collect that and some vintage toys. So nostalgia is a huge part of the american part of our stores, and we have a whole, like, you're going to be very excited.

Dylan Lauren [00:19:20]:
I think I'll show you one day we'll go through that.

Jill Rappaport [00:19:23]:
I can't wait. And I was so excited to get you on this podcast now, because with Easter just around the corner, this is one of your busiest times. Just coming off Valentine's Day now, going to Easter. What's going to happen in the world of candy at Easter time at Dylan's Candy Bar?

Dylan Lauren [00:19:39]:
Well, every day is a holiday besides Easter, which is my personal favorite because I love rabbits and I love the marshmallows and the Cadbury cream eggs of this time and all the colorful jelly beans. There's Mother's Day, there's Father's Day, there's camp, which we have a huge thing for campers when you go away, camper, you can't really have the candy. So there's that, and then there's back to school, get well, graduation. Feel better. We try to cover every occasion. And we're working towards events with candy, whether it's weddings and baby showers and having candy favors. I mean, there's candy for everyone in every shape and form. So this is one of the biggest holidays, but it also is one of many that we celebrate with candy.

Dylan Lauren [00:20:24]:
And, yeah, no, it comes early this year, which is, I mean, we're literally working on Eastern for next year. Started this year at the end of March 31. But we have to move fast because the rabbit designs and all the packaging we're doing, we created this amazing oversized basket of these metallic. Dylan's candy bar colored eggs. And then this is like, it's an over the top Easter basket. And then you can have your own Easter egg hunt. There's candy in it. There's candy tattoos.

Dylan Lauren [00:20:55]:
But it's really beautiful as a design aesthetic to put these metallic eggs on your table as a centerpiece for spring. So that's one of the items I'm excited for everyone to see, which you can start seeing now, obviously. And there's art, chocolate and vanilla mascots which give money to animals. And Dylan's Candy BarN foundation.

Jill Rappaport [00:21:14]:
Yeah, Dylan's Candy BarN. B A R N, which has been in existence from the beginning of your business. That was always such an important element. And I have to tell you, you must be the coolest mom in the world. First of all, I want to move in and I want you to adopt me, because who would want Dylan, Lauren as their mom and your wonderful, beautiful twins, which I had the pleasure of meeting. They came over to visit me and my animals and the horses with you, Cooper and Kingsley they're so adorable. What do they think of this life? I mean, walking in and seeing all the sample candies on the rabbits. This is heaven for any child.

Dylan Lauren [00:21:54]:
Oh, my God. Cooper Blue was so excited because my last photo shoot at the. And we had one at the apartment with the rabbits, actually, to show them to customers. So he loved the bunnies, and Kingsley Rainbow was very excited about that, but also eating all the products. So I was trying to get her to be in the photo. She's playing with the rabbits, but she was eating, we have these candy bunny kebabs, and we have these chocolate rabbits, and she just kept stealing the props. I'm like, you got to wait till the shoot is over.

Jill Rappaport [00:22:23]:
That would have been me.

Dylan Lauren [00:22:25]:
They love it. I mean, they've been good. Like, they do eat healthy as well, but everything, you know, my apartment, I'm between New York and sometimes upstate, we have candy in our house. Like, it's like a. But it's. To me, it's also art. I mean, I have packaging and displays of nostalgia products that I'm going to put in the store for the summer that I collect and other artists collect. And we show various art with candy.

Dylan Lauren [00:22:54]:
So they also love the crafts. Like, for Halloween coming up, we have a haunted house that you could decorate. And they helped me with the packaging and the candies to choose for that kid and for Easter, certainly. I go through them and I say, would you want this from the Easter Bunny? What would you want? Would you want us to buy you this? Should the Easter bunny go to Dylan's candy bar and get you that over the top basket or that chocolate or vanilla basket? There's tons of things, so they don't quite know what's real, what's not, but they know that Easter Bunny gets candy.

Jill Rappaport [00:23:27]:
I can only imagine being their friends and coming to their birthday parties. Those must be over the top, right?

Dylan Lauren [00:23:33]:
Yes. We've done at the Dylan's Candy Bar in the Hudson yards location. We did their last birthday party, and their friends were very happy and very high on sugar. But it was worth it and very fun. We had all candy games and activities. And that's part of what we're trying to do, is bring these parties to people's homes as well. So we're working on that Easter, different celebrations with candy. A lot of the products that we're developing are to make it more interactive using candy, whether it's crafting, entertaining, decorating.

Dylan Lauren [00:24:06]:
So you'll see stuff soon on our website. It's very cool.

Jill Rappaport [00:24:09]:
And even your twins names, Dylan are inspired by incredible colors. Cooper Blue and Kingsley rainbow.

Dylan Lauren [00:24:16]:
You know, blue is my favorite color. Turquoise is our logo.

Jill Rappaport [00:24:19]:
That's my favorite color. Turquoise.

Dylan Lauren [00:24:21]:
Yes. We both love our turquoise conchos. Yes.

Jill Rappaport [00:24:25]:
Native American jewelry.

Dylan Lauren [00:24:26]:
Yeah. And then rainbow. I mean, it's every color, and it's like our company stripe. We got every color in the rainbow in there. I just love color, and it's definitely. Having grown up in art with fashion, it's definitely a big part of my life. And sort of when I see candy, that's what I see first. I see the vibrant pops of color and the shine and the gummy textures and the shapes.

Dylan Lauren [00:24:48]:
It's art.

Jill Rappaport [00:24:50]:
Well, I'll tell you, you are such an inspiration, not only as a businesswoman, but a wife, a mother, and an animal advocate. Is there anything left on your very colorful rainbow list that you still would love to.

Dylan Lauren [00:25:05]:
You know, I definitely want to be able to open a Dylan's Candy BarN animal sanctuary perhaps one day. People's love of candy and animals in a place that allows people to adopt in the actual store, because with health laws, you can't always have the animals in the store. But something like that, where lots of animals can be downed by people who feel like, a little, maybe intimidated by going to certain shelters, they can come to Dylan's Candy bar and adopt. And if I can't do it in the sanctuary, I'll open a store that has an even bigger space for more animal rescue because it is part of our family member, the animals, especially our customer. I mean, half of our store staff have loved when we have these adoption events, and they love animals, and they've adopted from these events. And just the idea that a lot of the proceeds from our products, especially Easter, with our mascot being Chocolate and Vanilla the rabbit, is going towards helping animals people feel good. And I like being able to contribute to people feeling good about buying candy, but also knowing it's going towards the animals. So even more of that is something I want to do.

Dylan Lauren [00:26:14]:
And I love what you're doing. I mean, you started it all with all the things you do for animals, and you're like the iconic animal fashion person.

Jill Rappaport [00:26:23]:
Well, thank you. And I know that's what bonded us from the very beginning, and I am just so thrilled to have you back on the show. I don't want to wait another four years to have, but you are just an extraordinary human being. You never cease to amaze me with all your accomplishments, but most important, your beautiful heart. So, Dylan, thank you so very much for taking the time and telling us all about these delicious projects you're working on. I'm going to go right now. I have a butterfinger in the refrigerator.

Dylan Lauren [00:26:54]:
Okay, I get it. I think you should freeze my sugar. I'll be sure to get you your Mary Jane's and all your nostalgic favorites. And definitely Easter.

Jill Rappaport [00:27:04]:
No, I've already lost half my teeth. Don't do that.

Dylan Lauren [00:27:07]:
No, you got to just brush.

Jill Rappaport [00:27:11]:
Thank you so much. And please keep me updated on the rescue rabbit campaign. Yes, let's just keep doing what we're doing to save these animals in need. Bless your heart, Dylan.

Dylan Lauren [00:27:20]:
Thank you. And you too. It's an honor to be on your show.

Jill Rappaport [00:27:24]:
And thanks to all of you for listening to another edition of Rapaport to the Rescue. And please think about opening up your hearts and homes to an animal in need. And I don't know about you, but I'm off to find me some candy!
