Let's Talk Teeth
February is National Dental month in veterinary hospitals all over the nation. There are a lot of different promotions and buzz all designed to increase awareness of dental health for pets. Cats have some unique and important dental challenges that you want to know about.
Today's guest is Mary Berg,BS,LATG,RVT,VTS. She is a tooth specialist having worked in research and private practice and teaching other veterinary professionals how to best care for teeth. We chat with Mary about why cats need dental care, what cat owners can check and do at home and learn about feline dental disease. Make sure you are doing what you can to protect your cat's health. BIO:
Mary received her B.S. in Biology/Microbiology from South Dakota State University, her A.S. in Laboratory Animal Science from Redlands Community College, and her A.S. in Veterinary Technology from St. Petersburg College. She is a Charter member of the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians and received her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Dentistry in June 2006. Mary worked in research for over 26 years, specializing in on products aimed at improving oral health of companion animals and continues to work with companies to evaluate the efficacy of their products. In addition to her research background, she was the practice manager and dental specialist at a general practice for 7 years, teaches veterinary technology and is currently the president of Beyond the Crown Veterinary Education, a veterinary dental consulting service. Mary is actively involved in NAVTA, AVDT and KVTA. She also served on committees for the AVMA and AAVSB. She has authored or co-authored over 80 articles including publications in the Journal of Dental Research, multiple veterinary and veterinary technician journals as well as a speaker and wet lab instructor at numerous state and national conferences. When not involved in veterinary medicine, Mary lives on a small farm near Lawrence, Kansas with her husband, Doug, a terrier mix, Gypsy, an opinionated cat named, Ricochet, multiple barn cats and an antique piece of yard art (aka, a 28-year-old horse). Doug and Mary have two sons and three grandchildren.
