Diagnosing Cancer in your Dog or Cat in the ER: What Are My Options?
In this week's episode of ER VET, Dr. Justine Lee, DACVECC, DABT, board-certified emergency critical care veterinary specialist and toxicologist interviews Dr. Craig Clifford, DACVIM (Oncology), board-certified veterinary oncology (cancer) specialist on two common cancers seen in dogs and cats. Hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer that causes internal bleeding in dogs, and lymphoma, a cancer that affects lymph nodes and bone marrow, are commonly seen in older pets. In this episode, Dr. Clifford explains what clinical signs of cancer to look for, how to treat it, and what your options are as a pet owner.
Dr. Craig Clifford is our first medical oncologist and the new Director of Clinical Studies for Hope Veterinary Specialists. He is a graduate of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine and received an MS degree in Animal Science/Virology from the University of Delaware. After completing an internship and a medical oncology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, he became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology) in 2003. He joined Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in 2002 as a medical oncologist and Director of Clinical Research. Dr. Clifford was responsible for the creation of a clinical studies program at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and brings this expertise to Hope VS. This opportunity will enable Hope VS to offer cutting technologies and novel therapies to our clients not only in oncology but multiple other specialties. Dr. Clifford is a well-renowned oncologist who has authored/co-authored over 50 papers and book chapters. He was responsible for the creation of Veterinary Cancer Society‘s resident review session and the Northeast Veterinary Co-operative Oncology Group. He is a frequent lecturer at major veterinary meetings in the USA and abroad and will participate in Hope VS sponsored symposiums. Dr. Clifford has served on the VCS executive board, ACVIM Exam Rating Committee, Residency Training and Credentials Committee, ACVIM Strategic Planning Committee, Oncology Pathology Working Group, Co-chair of the Standards of Excellence in Residency Education Task Force and Examiner for the Australian Scientist’s Oncology Specialty Exam. He is a consultant for the Veterinary Information Network and also serves on the Scientific Advisory Boards for Industry (Zoetis, Elanco, Jaguar Animal Health, Plumbline Life Sciences and Aratana) as well as several Foundations (Animal Cancer Foundation, Day by Day and 2 Million Dogs).
