00:02:10.178 --> 00:02:12.658
Susan Marie: Welcome back, everyone, to the Doggy Diva Show.
00:02:12.658 --> 00:02:16.978
Susan Marie: Even in sunny Florida, we appreciate that cooler fall weather.
00:02:16.978 --> 00:02:28.118
Susan Marie: While around the country, many of you might be enjoying leaf peeping, visiting pumpkin patches, or maybe enjoying a cup of hot cocoa or apple cider.
00:02:28.118 --> 00:02:33.418
Susan Marie: No matter where we live, there are fall-related safety issues that could affect our pets.
00:02:33.418 --> 00:02:39.318
Susan Marie: And speaking of fall and fun with our pets, let's not forget the ultimate treat, Halloween.
00:02:39.778 --> 00:02:51.758
Susan Marie: So with us today is Monica Leighton, owner of Professional Pet Sitting, to share some helpful tips so we can all enjoy the beautiful weather and safely celebrate Halloween with our pets.
00:02:51.758 --> 00:02:53.798
Susan Marie: Welcome back, Monica.
00:02:53.798 --> 00:02:55.838
Monica Leighton: Hi, thank you.
00:02:55.838 --> 00:03:04.938
Susan Marie: Well, as tradition has it, with the change of seasons, you always bring us helpful health and safety information for our beloved fur kids.
00:03:05.358 --> 00:03:13.558
Susan Marie: Can you share some advice for pet parents navigating the potential issues that they may encounter during the fall months?
00:03:13.558 --> 00:03:21.138
Susan Marie: You know, we're heard nationwide, so it just gets a little cool in Florida, but I know that things really start to change nationwide.
00:03:21.138 --> 00:03:24.578
Susan Marie: And I do miss the leaves changing colors.
00:03:24.578 --> 00:03:28.058
Monica Leighton: So yeah, fall brings some great things.
00:03:28.058 --> 00:03:31.558
Monica Leighton: It's nice to have things cool down a little bit.
00:03:31.558 --> 00:03:33.098
Monica Leighton: People like to get outside more.
00:03:33.278 --> 00:03:34.998
Monica Leighton: It's not as hot.
00:03:34.998 --> 00:03:39.438
Monica Leighton: But again, as you said, it comes with some potential dangers.
00:03:39.438 --> 00:03:49.338
Monica Leighton: So if we want to be able to get outside with our pets and have a great time and keep them safe during the fall, just a couple of things to be aware of.
00:03:49.338 --> 00:03:57.038
Monica Leighton: I know in some areas, they start getting snow, and snow and ice can cause cracked and bleeding paws.
00:03:57.038 --> 00:04:02.178
Monica Leighton: A lot of the salt and chemical deicers can also be toxic if it's licked off the paws.
00:04:02.398 --> 00:04:08.218
Monica Leighton: So always be careful with that, if your area is getting any snowfall at all soon.
00:04:08.218 --> 00:04:11.218
Monica Leighton: You always want to make sure that your pet is microchipped.
00:04:11.218 --> 00:04:17.158
Monica Leighton: And we talk about this so much during disaster season and things like that.
00:04:17.158 --> 00:04:25.918
Monica Leighton: There's been research done that snow can affect your pet's sense of smell, and also the ability to sometimes find their way around.
00:04:25.918 --> 00:04:33.318
Monica Leighton: So an area that may be familiar to them at one point may not be familiar to them in the snow.
00:04:33.318 --> 00:04:36.438
Monica Leighton: So definitely making sure your pet's identifiable.
00:04:36.438 --> 00:04:44.258
Monica Leighton: Make sure your pet is up to date if they're out in areas where they're going to come in contact with wildlife.
00:04:44.258 --> 00:04:55.938
Monica Leighton: I know during this time of the year, the wildlife, like in particular, skunks, snakes, they're out and about as they get ready to prepare for the winter time that's going to be following.
00:04:56.298 --> 00:05:08.318
Monica Leighton: And you don't want to come across a skunk and deal with that, or snakes that could possibly be toxic or be venomous, that can cause an issue for our pets.
00:05:08.318 --> 00:05:10.678
Monica Leighton: Another hazard is our mushrooms.
00:05:10.678 --> 00:05:13.738
Monica Leighton: You know, a lot of mushrooms start growing.
00:05:13.738 --> 00:05:15.478
Monica Leighton: They can cause different symptoms.
00:05:15.478 --> 00:05:25.138
Monica Leighton: And I know when it comes to mushrooms, different mushrooms are hard to identify, and they can lead to different problems.
00:05:25.218 --> 00:05:40.338
Monica Leighton: And they kind of classify them into three different groups, like GI issues, neurological issues, and ones that are extremely toxic, that can cause oranga damage, death.
00:05:40.338 --> 00:05:45.918
Monica Leighton: Always, if your pet gets into a mushroom, try to take one with you to the vet's office.
00:05:45.918 --> 00:05:50.058
Monica Leighton: That way they can attempt to identify it, if you're not exactly sure what it is.
00:05:50.058 --> 00:05:51.698
Monica Leighton: And definitely just be aware.
00:05:51.698 --> 00:05:54.438
Monica Leighton: And some are non-toxic.
00:05:54.798 --> 00:05:58.298
Monica Leighton: Some may just cause some GI upsets and lose tool.
00:05:58.298 --> 00:06:07.838
Monica Leighton: But to be safe, because mushrooms are so hard to identify a lot of times, just err on the side of caution and try to stay away from those.
00:06:07.838 --> 00:06:10.858
Monica Leighton: Another thing is, the weather's cool down.
00:06:10.958 --> 00:06:17.498
Monica Leighton: You'll start beginning seeing more rodents out because they're looking for warmer places to go.
00:06:17.498 --> 00:06:23.718
Monica Leighton: So definitely be cautious in regards to chemicals, rodenticides, even mothballs.
00:06:24.198 --> 00:06:33.258
Monica Leighton: Mothballs look benign, but they can definitely be quite dangerous as they contain chemicals that can be toxic to our pets.
00:06:33.258 --> 00:06:45.858
Monica Leighton: Some of the signs of issues after consuming mothballs, GI upsets, neurological signs, abnormalities in the blood cells, so blood changes, and sometimes even organ failure.
00:06:45.858 --> 00:06:58.298
Monica Leighton: And of course, during that time of the year, you're baking more things, you are using more of our spices like nutmegs and apple cores and things of that nature.
00:06:58.298 --> 00:07:00.718
Monica Leighton: So be really cautious with your trash.
00:07:00.718 --> 00:07:12.558
Monica Leighton: You don't want to make sure that things like rotten apples, moldy baked goods, things of that nature can cause severe GI upsets in our pets.
00:07:12.558 --> 00:07:17.518
Monica Leighton: And baked goods can even lead into toxic issues with our pets.
00:07:18.078 --> 00:07:24.158
Monica Leighton: Another thing when you're out hiking or being outside with your pets, acorns.
00:07:24.158 --> 00:07:26.618
Monica Leighton: I know we get a lot of those that fall out of the trees.
00:07:26.618 --> 00:07:31.758
Monica Leighton: So being cautious, it can become a choking hazard and they can cause intestinal blockage.
00:07:31.758 --> 00:07:35.138
Monica Leighton: So making sure that your pets are not eating a lot of that stuff.
00:07:35.138 --> 00:07:42.858
Monica Leighton: And some of the autumn plants that come out that are great and they get you in the, you know, in all the fields for the autumn weather.
00:07:42.858 --> 00:07:50.998
Monica Leighton: But some of them, you know, again, can cause GI upsets, loose stool, things like your chrysanthemums, your autumn crocus.
00:07:50.998 --> 00:07:55.958
Monica Leighton: So definitely, you know, mums, daisies, things of that nature, definitely be cautious.
00:07:55.958 --> 00:08:00.958
Monica Leighton: And the same thing if the dried ones, like your potpourri or your essential oils.
00:08:00.958 --> 00:08:07.938
Monica Leighton: Just the other day, I was so excited, I got out my wax burner and I put my pumpkin spice wax melts in there.
00:08:07.938 --> 00:08:12.938
Monica Leighton: Just be cautious with things like that and make sure that they are completely out of reach of your pets.
00:08:13.138 --> 00:08:21.518
Monica Leighton: Especially some of our curious kitties who like to stick their foot in things and lick it off.
00:08:21.518 --> 00:08:29.698
Monica Leighton: Or even a pet that can get onto a higher couch or gain access to something that may be at a table level.
00:08:29.698 --> 00:08:40.518
Monica Leighton: You certainly don't want them to smell something that they think will be a good idea to investigate and have a problem when it comes to that.
00:08:40.518 --> 00:08:45.838
Monica Leighton: And of course, as it starts getting older, people start to winterize their vehicles.
00:08:45.838 --> 00:08:48.858
Monica Leighton: So always be careful about storing antifreeze.
00:08:48.858 --> 00:08:51.538
Monica Leighton: You know, the smell and the taste are sweet.
00:08:51.538 --> 00:08:55.498
Monica Leighton: So it can definitely be attractive to pets.
00:08:55.498 --> 00:08:59.378
Monica Leighton: It's something that can cause serious kidney damage.
00:08:59.378 --> 00:09:09.978
Monica Leighton: And you need to be really cautious, you know, in regards to the storage as well as the use when you are using it and making sure that your pets, you are not getting into it.
00:09:10.298 --> 00:09:19.698
Monica Leighton: And another thing that comes during this time of the year, when you get into fall and then you go into winter, it starts to become cold and flu season.
00:09:19.698 --> 00:09:26.618
Monica Leighton: As much as it's not fun for us, you always have to be really cautious, especially when you're not feeling well.
00:09:26.618 --> 00:09:34.378
Monica Leighton: People will have allergy meds in their purses or, you know, cold and flu allergy relief and cold and flu relief.
00:09:34.378 --> 00:09:38.718
Monica Leighton: A lot of people have to use inhalers because of some of the pollens and things that come out.
00:09:39.158 --> 00:09:43.218
Monica Leighton: And you always want to make sure that they stay out of reach of pets.
00:09:43.218 --> 00:09:44.958
Monica Leighton: They can become quite harmful.
00:09:44.958 --> 00:09:51.918
Monica Leighton: There's a lot of, you know, reports in there of pets that get into purses or seal inhalers off the tables.
00:09:51.918 --> 00:09:54.238
Monica Leighton: And then, you know, they're chewing on it.
00:09:54.238 --> 00:09:56.718
Monica Leighton: Same thing with our cold and flu medication.
00:09:56.718 --> 00:10:13.598
Monica Leighton: So really being cautious about the environment, the things around you, and just make sure that as long as you are kind of diligent and observant, that you can have a safe fall and enjoy being outside and doing these fun things.
00:10:13.598 --> 00:10:18.378
Monica Leighton: You know, hiking is wonderful, but always making sure that you have an eye on your pet.
00:10:18.378 --> 00:10:28.538
Monica Leighton: If they are off leash, don't let them travel too far ahead of you because it takes a second for them to grab something or get ahold of something that can cause a problem.
00:10:28.538 --> 00:10:36.638
Monica Leighton: And if you're a distance away, you may not even see that they've gotten into it and could potentially have an issue.
00:10:36.638 --> 00:10:44.078
Monica Leighton: So definitely enjoy the fall season, but be diligent of our pets and what they have the possibility of getting into.
00:10:44.078 --> 00:10:54.078
Monica Leighton: And that way, they're safe, there's no emergency vet visits, and it's a great, enjoyable time of the year for everybody involved.
00:10:54.078 --> 00:10:55.298
Susan Marie: That's what we like to hear.
00:10:55.298 --> 00:10:58.438
Susan Marie: No emergency room visits.
00:10:58.438 --> 00:10:58.758
Monica Leighton: Yay.
00:10:59.378 --> 00:11:00.078
Monica Leighton: Absolutely.
00:11:00.078 --> 00:11:01.638
Monica Leighton: They're not fun.
00:11:01.638 --> 00:11:02.498
Monica Leighton: No.
00:11:02.498 --> 00:11:04.678
Susan Marie: So let's take a quick break.

Susan Marie: PetLifeRadio.com Welcome back, we're here with Monica Leighton, who has some helpful tips for celebrating Halloween safely with our pets.
00:12:53.910 --> 00:13:02.230
Susan Marie: Now, Monica, you know me, and I have been to many of your pet functions with my pets all in costume.
00:13:02.230 --> 00:13:06.030
Susan Marie: I am that one that loves to dress up my pets for Halloween.
00:13:06.030 --> 00:13:10.070
Susan Marie: And I also like taking them from house to house because we live in a small neighborhood.
00:13:10.070 --> 00:13:12.950
Susan Marie: Everybody has dogs, so it's like really fun.
00:13:13.310 --> 00:13:22.050
Susan Marie: But can you just share some advice for pet parents who are hoping to celebrate Halloween safely with their pets this year?
00:13:22.050 --> 00:13:28.750
Monica Leighton: Yes, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and we do not hold back celebrating in our house.
00:13:28.750 --> 00:13:35.870
Monica Leighton: Our pets have matching outfits a lot of times, and we like doing the family themes.
00:13:35.870 --> 00:13:39.550
Monica Leighton: Halloween is just so fun, and it's great to include our pets.
00:13:39.550 --> 00:13:41.030
Monica Leighton: There's so many fun activities.
00:13:41.290 --> 00:13:48.830
Monica Leighton: Fall festivals and pumpkin carving and dressing up and Halloween parties and campfires.
00:13:48.830 --> 00:13:53.970
Monica Leighton: But we definitely want to make sure that our pets are covered when we're enjoying those activities.
00:13:53.970 --> 00:13:57.770
Monica Leighton: So first and foremost, it's not Halloween without dressing up.
00:13:57.770 --> 00:14:00.290
Monica Leighton: And a lot of people love to dress up their pets.
00:14:00.290 --> 00:14:09.070
Monica Leighton: And it's always just being sure that the costumes are well-fitting, that they don't impede your pet's sight or your pet's movement.
00:14:09.070 --> 00:14:14.310
Monica Leighton: You want to make sure that they're loose and they do not have any kind of constricting material.
00:14:14.310 --> 00:14:19.870
Monica Leighton: Checking the underarms, under the legs, a lot of things will...
00:14:19.870 --> 00:14:27.530
Monica Leighton: The costumes have either sleeves or straps that will go underneath the armpits or underneath the legs.
00:14:27.530 --> 00:14:29.910
Monica Leighton: It's always making sure that those are not too tight.
00:14:29.910 --> 00:14:33.650
Monica Leighton: You don't want to get any kind of rashes or anything when your pet's moving.
00:14:33.650 --> 00:14:37.170
Monica Leighton: So being able to have enough space to be comfortable.
00:14:37.170 --> 00:14:48.970
Monica Leighton: Also being really cautious about a lot of things around their neck and how they fit around the neck, and making sure they're not too snug, that you have a costume that's not going to easily be caught on things.
00:14:48.970 --> 00:14:58.910
Monica Leighton: And they should be able to walk and not have it adjust and move to where it's going to become a falling hazard or tripping hazard or getting tangled up in it.
00:14:58.910 --> 00:15:05.930
Monica Leighton: You also just want to be aware that certain pets' costumes can cause stress and anxiety.
00:15:06.390 --> 00:15:13.270
Monica Leighton: So, if your pet loves to dress up, then by all means, we want to see them.
00:15:13.270 --> 00:15:32.450
Monica Leighton: However, if they are a little taken aback, they seem anxious, stressful or anxiety ridden when you dress them up, then it may be a good idea to skip that aspect of Halloween and include your pets in another way just so they are comfortable.
00:15:32.890 --> 00:15:40.110
Monica Leighton: Another thing, of course, that goes hand in hand with the holidays, and this is already becoming a problem in my house, the Halloween treats.
00:15:40.110 --> 00:15:49.890
Monica Leighton: You know, they come out during this time of the year, and they always go on sale in their bite size, and you put a big bag in the bowl, and then you eat them constantly.
00:15:49.890 --> 00:15:54.430
Monica Leighton: But we want to make sure our pets are not eating them.
00:15:54.430 --> 00:16:15.430
Monica Leighton: So, always making sure that if you do have candy, treats, you take your pets Halloween trick-or-treating with the kids, making sure that everything can be closed, and your pet does not have a way to get into them, because of course we want to avoid some of the toxic issues, most commonly chocolate.
00:16:15.430 --> 00:16:28.410
Monica Leighton: ASPCA has the great chocolate toxicity calculator that you can enter what your pet weighs, and see how much chocolate they consume, and it'll tell you suggestions and what side effects to look for.
00:16:28.850 --> 00:16:38.230
Monica Leighton: You do have to eat a decent amount of chocolate to have more serious problems, and the majority of cases are mainly GI upsets.
00:16:38.230 --> 00:16:49.250
Monica Leighton: However, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is, and you always want to err on the side of caution, because you do not want to get into an issue with having toxicity.
00:16:49.250 --> 00:16:55.170
Monica Leighton: And another thing is over the years, our candies have come in way more variety.
00:16:55.490 --> 00:17:02.590
Monica Leighton: You have people that are diabetics, or they have health issues, or they're simply just trying to live a healthier lifestyle.
00:17:02.590 --> 00:17:17.110
Monica Leighton: And they have over the years gotten more and more candy and sweet treats that are made with sugar alternatives to be accessible to people that trying to live that lifestyle with a lower sugar.
00:17:17.290 --> 00:17:28.790
Monica Leighton: However, some of those lower sugar items are substituted with xylitol, which can be extremely toxic to our pets.
00:17:28.790 --> 00:17:31.310
Monica Leighton: A lot of our gums have that in there.
00:17:31.310 --> 00:17:35.870
Monica Leighton: I've seen a lot of low sugar gummy bears, things of that nature.
00:17:35.870 --> 00:17:40.510
Monica Leighton: And I know during the holidays, some people like to give out healthier forms of treats.
00:17:40.510 --> 00:17:48.250
Monica Leighton: So being really cautious to make sure that our pets are not getting into any of them, especially if they contain xylitol.
00:17:48.250 --> 00:17:55.350
Monica Leighton: And if your pet gets into anything that is labeled low sugar or no sugar or even raisins.
00:17:55.530 --> 00:18:01.750
Monica Leighton: They say raisins is nature's candy and they're still giving out as Halloween, but they're very toxic to our pets.
00:18:01.750 --> 00:18:05.730
Monica Leighton: So definitely get them straight to a veterinarian if they get into that.
00:18:05.730 --> 00:18:06.630
Monica Leighton: Halloween makeup.
00:18:06.630 --> 00:18:07.850
Monica Leighton: This is another great one.
00:18:07.850 --> 00:18:14.990
Monica Leighton: If you have family, dressing up, costumes, making sure that your pets are not getting into that.
00:18:14.990 --> 00:18:19.710
Monica Leighton: We actually had an incident similar to that when Haley was a little younger.
00:18:19.710 --> 00:18:21.750
Monica Leighton: We were babysitting my sister's lab.
00:18:21.750 --> 00:18:24.650
Monica Leighton: And you know, a typical lab, they eat everything.
00:18:24.650 --> 00:18:30.650
Monica Leighton: And Haley decided that she was going to try to put lipstick on her with her costume.
00:18:30.650 --> 00:18:35.750
Monica Leighton: And the dog ate the entire tube, not just the lipstick, but the tube it came in.
00:18:36.150 --> 00:18:37.170
Monica Leighton: Oh, yeah.
00:18:37.170 --> 00:18:40.030
Monica Leighton: So things of that nature.
00:18:40.030 --> 00:18:42.550
Monica Leighton: And you know, you leave it out when you're getting ready.
00:18:42.550 --> 00:18:45.770
Monica Leighton: And some of them have smells and they're sparkly.
00:18:45.770 --> 00:18:48.790
Monica Leighton: And you know, a lot of them come in the little cylinder discs.
00:18:48.790 --> 00:18:53.830
Monica Leighton: You know, you can get a lot of the adhesive glues, things like that, that come with masks.
00:18:53.830 --> 00:18:57.570
Monica Leighton: So just making sure all of that as well within, out of your pet's reach.
00:18:57.570 --> 00:19:01.330
Monica Leighton: So they're not scooping anything up and having problems.
00:19:01.330 --> 00:19:16.030
Monica Leighton: Of course, you know, your decorations, being cautious, you know, when it comes to tripping hazards or shocking hazards, garlands that could get tied up in your pet, things that are thin and tinsely that they could possibly chew on.
00:19:16.030 --> 00:19:24.750
Monica Leighton: Another thing this time of the year, especially with decor items, the big dried horn husks that people like to put out with their hail barrels.
00:19:24.750 --> 00:19:31.730
Monica Leighton: It looks so great and fall-like, but horn on the cobs can, they can attract our pets.
00:19:31.730 --> 00:19:32.730
Monica Leighton: It looks really yummy.
00:19:33.210 --> 00:19:39.470
Monica Leighton: But the actual corn cob can cause GI issues and blockages in our pets.
00:19:39.470 --> 00:19:53.950
Monica Leighton: So being really cautious when it comes to that, even in our decor, because it's quite often that the pets are still attracted to them, even though they are blackled with glue and paint and are strictly decorative.
00:19:53.950 --> 00:19:56.750
Monica Leighton: But they still get consumed a lot during this time of the year.
00:19:57.010 --> 00:19:57.610
Monica Leighton: Glow sticks.
00:19:57.610 --> 00:19:58.790
Monica Leighton: Glow sticks are another one.
00:19:58.790 --> 00:20:00.230
Monica Leighton: Our glow jewelry.
00:20:00.230 --> 00:20:05.590
Monica Leighton: It is fantastic to have your family reflective.
00:20:05.590 --> 00:20:10.350
Monica Leighton: And when you're out, especially with your pets, you know, making sure that they are reflective.
00:20:10.350 --> 00:20:14.190
Monica Leighton: So that way, you know, when the sun sets, you can be easily seen.
00:20:14.190 --> 00:20:22.670
Monica Leighton: But a lot of people, the kids will love glow sticks or glow jewelry, or they'll attach stuff to keys to, you know, help bring some extra light.
00:20:22.670 --> 00:20:26.170
Monica Leighton: And you want to be really cautious about your pet not getting into them.
00:20:26.510 --> 00:20:32.990
Monica Leighton: If ingested, it can cause issues, a lot of foaming, head shaking, vomiting, a lot of GI issues.
00:20:32.990 --> 00:20:36.950
Monica Leighton: So being careful that those are out of your pet's reach.
00:20:36.950 --> 00:20:50.770
Monica Leighton: And of course, you know, last but not least, our campfires, our lanterns, our artificial fire logs, all things that could potentially cause burns, injuries, stomach upset, possible, you know, intestinal blockages.
00:20:50.770 --> 00:20:55.870
Monica Leighton: So just being careful and alert on some of the potential dangers.
00:20:56.250 --> 00:21:02.750
Monica Leighton: So that way, when you include your pet in these things, you know exactly what to look for and what to be cautious with.
00:21:02.750 --> 00:21:11.490
Monica Leighton: So your pet is able to enjoy themselves and you're able to enjoy yourself and not be worried about your pet getting into something they shouldn't.
00:21:11.490 --> 00:21:16.950
Susan Marie: No, because we want to have fun with our pets on Halloween, any holiday, but yeah.
00:21:16.950 --> 00:21:18.750
