Cool Cat Collective Cat Themed Gallery – Buy Cool Stuff, Help Cool Cats!

Michelle Fern on Pet Life Radio

This week Michelle Fern chats cats with Jena Winberry Carr, who along with her husband Matt created the Cool Cat Collective Cat Themed Gallery. Their concept is a totally original one: a hybrid of the "cat cafe" model with a boutique gallery, but it's totally free to visit with the cats and no appointment is needed. The idea is to get more casual visitors in to meet the cats to highly socialize them and get them seen by more potential adopters.  Also joining them is Vita Manzoli, co-founder of TippedEars, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose purpose is to combat cat overpopulation through humane TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).

BIO:

Jena Winberry Carr is the co-founder of Cool Cat Collective, a boutique & art gallery for cat people. Her work background is an eclectic mix of nonprofit and small business spanning fields from the arts to food & beverage. Jena has fostered 39 cats to date and only adopted 2 of them. She lives in Long Beach with her partner, child, dog, and never enough cats.

Vita Manzoli grew up in Italy, where the cat overpopulation issue is no better than in the US. While visiting her grandparents in Tuscany, she would always feed and befriend all the outdoor cats, and even talked her Grandma into adopting a few of them. Upon moving to Southern California in 2018, Vita started getting involved with the rescue world by becoming a volunteer at a local kitten nursery. She has since fostered cats and kittens of all ages, including bottle babies, friendly and unsocialized mamas, teenagers and medical fosters. She has been a foster mentor for other foster parents, as well as a member of adoption and TNR teams at a local rescue. The more exposure to the rescue world she got, the clearer it became to her that the problem needs to be addressed at its roots. By improving the lives of community cats, Vita feels she will really be contributing to stopping the never-ending cycle of suffering.

Vita has a background in science and has been working in the research world for over 15 years. Her will to continuously learn and find methodical solutions to problems is her driving force through any challenge she faces in life.

Vita is a proud mom of 4 cats, including a special needs boy, Sebastian, she nurtured back to health after he suffered a severe nerve injury as a baby.

00:01:20.918 --> 00:01:25.258
Michelle Fern: Hey, Michelle Fern here, and you know saving cats is near and dear to my heart.

00:01:25.258 --> 00:01:31.058
Michelle Fern: Did you know that there is an estimated 70 to 100 million free roaming cats in the United States?

00:01:31.058 --> 00:01:34.478
Michelle Fern: And without spay neuter, that number will keep growing.

00:01:34.478 --> 00:01:41.318
Michelle Fern: Not only does spay neuter mainly reduce the community cat population, but it also keeps cats healthier.

00:01:41.318 --> 00:01:47.318
Michelle Fern: Scooter, the neutered cat, is on a mission to give cats an extra life by making it hip to be sniffed.

00:01:47.478 --> 00:01:52.678
Michelle Fern: Visit his website, giventhemten.org, to help pioneer a better world for cats.

Michelle Fern: That's GiveThemTen, spelled out, T-E-N, dot org.

00:01:58.698 --> 00:02:01.818
Announcer: Let's Talk Pets on petliferadio.com.

00:02:12.450 --> 00:02:13.690
Michelle Fern: Welcome back, everyone.

00:02:13.690 --> 00:02:15.750
Michelle Fern: I'd like to welcome Jena.

00:02:15.750 --> 00:02:19.510
Michelle Fern: She is the co-founder of the Cool Cat Collective.

00:02:19.510 --> 00:02:25.890
Michelle Fern: And Vita, she is one of the founders of the TNR-based rescue partner, TippedEars.

00:02:25.890 --> 00:02:27.330
Michelle Fern: Welcome, Jena and Vita.

00:02:27.330 --> 00:02:28.650
Jena Winberry Carr: Thank you so much for having us.

00:02:28.650 --> 00:02:29.550
Vita: Thank you.

00:02:29.550 --> 00:02:33.870
Michelle Fern: So we're gonna talk about the Cool Cat Collective, because you guys reached out.

00:02:33.870 --> 00:02:44.190
Michelle Fern: You're a location in Long Beach, a brick and mortar location that is kind of like kind of like a not quite a cat cafe, but you do foster adoptions.

00:02:44.190 --> 00:02:48.010
Michelle Fern: We're going to talk more about that, but it's something so unique.

00:02:48.010 --> 00:02:51.930
Michelle Fern: And you also have merchandise, which I thought was really cool.

00:02:51.930 --> 00:02:58.010
Michelle Fern: But before we get into exactly what that is, can you guys both share some background on yourselves?

00:02:58.010 --> 00:02:58.670
Jena Winberry Carr: Sure.

00:02:58.670 --> 00:03:00.150
Jena Winberry Carr: This is Jena speaking.

00:03:00.150 --> 00:03:07.250
Jena Winberry Carr: I moved back to Long Beach from Washington, DC, about two, two and a half years ago.

00:03:07.250 --> 00:03:09.530
Jena Winberry Carr: And I grew up in Long Beach.

00:03:09.530 --> 00:03:16.990
Jena Winberry Carr: And a big exciting part of moving back was being able to really get invested in the community here.

00:03:16.990 --> 00:03:43.010
Jena Winberry Carr: And part of that was volunteering at the local shelter, which kind of started this whole journey into cat fostering, which as anyone who's fostered knows, and you kind of go on a snowball learning education about why are there so many cats and community cats, and then trap new to return, and you kind of get more and more awareness and education about the overpopulation problem.

00:03:43.010 --> 00:04:06.870
Jena Winberry Carr: So when my husband and I sold our business back in DC, and we're thinking about the next chapter of our lives, we really wanted to dedicate that to creating a new model of blending small business with animal rescue to kind of create a complimentary funding stream for helping cats.

00:04:06.870 --> 00:04:10.810
Jena Winberry Carr: We have a background in small business, and we also are both artists.

00:04:10.810 --> 00:04:21.910
Jena Winberry Carr: So creating this boutique slash art gallery with Foster Cat became, first it was a dream that we didn't know if it would work out, but we started talking about it more and more.

00:04:21.910 --> 00:04:26.310
Jena Winberry Carr: And I had been volunteering with TippedEars, and I just absolutely love what they do.

00:04:27.030 --> 00:04:39.170
Jena Winberry Carr: I think TNR is just the absolute most vital piece of the puzzle in terms of solving the cat overpopulation problem, which as I'm sure you're aware is very, very massive here in LA County.

00:04:39.170 --> 00:04:40.910
Michelle Fern: It's bad every place.

00:04:40.910 --> 00:04:41.970
Jena Winberry Carr: Yeah.

00:04:41.970 --> 00:04:46.330
Michelle Fern: I moved, that's how I got my cat crew, which was at one time five.

00:04:46.330 --> 00:04:54.470
Michelle Fern: I've had a few shows on that, because if you're in a warm area, especially, it's kitten season is not able to October.

00:04:54.470 --> 00:04:55.490
Michelle Fern: It's kind of year round.

00:04:55.490 --> 00:04:59.290
Michelle Fern: I mean, it's still April to October ish, but yeah, it's bad.

00:04:59.290 --> 00:04:59.910
Jena Winberry Carr: Oh yeah.

00:04:59.910 --> 00:05:00.110
Jena Winberry Carr: Yeah.

00:05:00.110 --> 00:05:03.050
Jena Winberry Carr: It's definitely year round here.

00:05:03.050 --> 00:05:14.430
Jena Winberry Carr: And as TippedEars is trapping in Compton, they're coming across lots of litters of kittens and other cats that need to be fooled for medical reasons.

00:05:14.430 --> 00:05:17.410
Jena Winberry Carr: And so that's how they end up also having fosters.

00:05:17.410 --> 00:05:22.610
Jena Winberry Carr: So I was fostering for them and the cats who come into our store, all from TippedEars.

00:05:22.610 --> 00:05:24.810
Jena Winberry Carr: I guess that's a good segue into Vita.

00:05:24.810 --> 00:05:25.270
Vita Manzoli: Okay.

00:05:25.270 --> 00:05:27.070
Michelle Fern: And Vita, tell us about TippedEars.

00:05:27.070 --> 00:05:28.810
Michelle Fern: And I love the name, by the way.

00:05:28.890 --> 00:05:30.070
Vita Manzoli: Oh, yes.

00:05:30.070 --> 00:05:36.650
Michelle Fern: For those that don't know, can you share what TippedEars actually, because there is a thing called TippedEars, what that means also?

00:05:36.650 --> 00:05:37.810
Vita Manzoli: Absolutely.

00:05:37.810 --> 00:05:39.230
Vita Manzoli: So my name is Vita.

00:05:39.290 --> 00:05:40.650
Vita Manzoli: I grew up in Italy.

00:05:40.650 --> 00:05:46.190
Vita Manzoli: I moved to the US when I was in my early 20s, lived in Miami for a very long time.

00:05:46.190 --> 00:05:52.150
Vita Manzoli: And when I moved to California, I started getting involved with local kitten rescues.

00:05:52.150 --> 00:06:06.810
Vita Manzoli: And as time went by and COVID hit, and the whole shelter world changed around us, what the person who then became my rescue partner, Renée, and I sat down and decided that we wanted to focus more on TNR.

00:06:06.810 --> 00:06:20.790
Vita Manzoli: And we started TippedEars because the year tip is the international sign that a cat who lives outside has been trapped, neutered, or spayed and then returned outside.

00:06:20.790 --> 00:06:28.490
Vita Manzoli: So we picked this name, TippedEars, because we represent proudly the TippedEars population.

00:06:28.490 --> 00:06:45.170
Vita Manzoli: And we just decided that doing TNR wasn't enough, that we really wanted to address the root of the problem, especially with shelters increasingly sending, you know, like turning away people because they are always overcrowded.

00:06:45.170 --> 00:06:55.770
Vita Manzoli: And all these cats are outside and there's a lot of people good-hearted who want to help them but don't have the resources to stay and neuter them.

00:06:55.770 --> 00:06:58.490
Vita Manzoli: And so that's how we started our rescue.

00:06:58.490 --> 00:07:18.110
Vita Manzoli: And we take pleas from the public, we go out, we meet them, we meet the cats in the colony, and then we go out with traps, we mainly trap the cats, we bring them, drive them to the stay neuter clinic, where they get paid a neuter, they get vaccinated, they get free medication.

00:07:18.110 --> 00:07:31.450
Vita Manzoli: We take care of any extra medical that the cats will need, and then we release them to their outdoors home, where the feeders can keep feeding them, but they stop reproducing, and they stop adding to the cat of their population problem.

00:07:31.450 --> 00:07:35.670
Michelle Fern: Right, because I don't know the number, but I've seen it.

00:07:35.670 --> 00:07:41.790
Michelle Fern: I had a hired cat catcher for humane catching for Sammy.

00:07:41.790 --> 00:08:03.230
Michelle Fern: This was a long time ago, and Sammy unfortunately is no longer with us, but she was a mama cat that kept having kittens, and I learned, because on the back of her card, I knew this before, but on the back of her card, she has, she's a cat catcher, has a business card, and it just shows the population, you know, how just a few cats over time with the breeding can equal.

00:08:03.230 --> 00:08:05.290
Michelle Fern: I don't know if it, I don't think that a million.

00:08:05.290 --> 00:08:07.690
Vita Manzoli: I can tell you the number if you want the estimate.

00:08:07.690 --> 00:08:21.390
Vita Manzoli: Well, still, if a single female cat, non-spayed in her life, throughout her lifetime, can cause the dirt, okay, in terms of over 400,000 cats.

00:08:21.390 --> 00:08:24.710
Vita Manzoli: So for one female, you get over 400,000.

00:08:24.710 --> 00:08:25.850
Michelle Fern: That's crazy.

00:08:25.850 --> 00:08:27.090
Vita Manzoli: Yes, it is.

00:08:27.090 --> 00:08:34.910
Michelle Fern: I'm curious, since your organization is named TippedEars for the cats TippedEars, do you know where that started or how that started?

00:08:34.910 --> 00:08:37.930
Vita Manzoli: I don't know where it started.

00:08:38.350 --> 00:08:42.490
Vita Manzoli: It probably started along with, I want to say with the Nokia.

00:08:42.490 --> 00:08:43.790
Michelle Fern: I mean, it's a good idea.

00:08:43.790 --> 00:08:45.390
Vita Manzoli: Yeah, I should definitely look.

00:08:45.390 --> 00:08:47.490
Vita Manzoli: I mean, I know that it's international.

00:08:47.490 --> 00:08:58.030
Vita Manzoli: So California actually deviates from, they want to be special, like California likes to be special and California eat for a different year than everybody else.

00:08:58.030 --> 00:08:58.570
Michelle Fern: They do?

00:08:58.570 --> 00:08:59.890
Vita Manzoli: I know because, yes, they do.

00:09:01.110 --> 00:09:07.830
Vita Manzoli: In California, cats get a different year tip than in every world, every other state and every other country.

00:09:07.830 --> 00:09:11.130
Vita Manzoli: But I can tell you that year tip is international.

00:09:11.130 --> 00:09:15.910
Vita Manzoli: I know because I come from Europe and then cats are year tipped over there.

00:09:15.910 --> 00:09:33.390
Vita Manzoli: And it's just international science and it really helps us trappers not to cause any undue stress to the cat, trapping them again and also like wasting precious appointments that are very hard to find right now, bringing in all the other cats.

00:09:33.390 --> 00:09:40.170
Michelle Fern: And I've seen variations from that year tipped, clip the tip of it and the cats are put under, they don't feel it.

00:09:40.170 --> 00:09:48.330
Michelle Fern: So Jena, it's really cool that you are combining your love for art and your love for cats.

00:09:48.330 --> 00:09:51.270
Michelle Fern: How is that working in Cool Cat Collective?

00:09:51.270 --> 00:09:55.070
Michelle Fern: So when you go into your brick and mortar location, what do you see?

00:09:55.490 --> 00:10:04.870
Jena Winberry Carr: So one of the biggest things you'll see when you come in is we always have a art show on display on one of our larger walls.

00:10:04.870 --> 00:10:07.470
Jena Winberry Carr: Currently, our first show is still up.

00:10:07.470 --> 00:10:10.350
Jena Winberry Carr: It is with the artist Nick Vargas.

00:10:10.350 --> 00:10:17.090
Jena Winberry Carr: He is an incredible multimedia artist and we were lucky enough to become friends with him.

00:10:17.090 --> 00:10:21.430
Jena Winberry Carr: Through actually, he gave me my first tattoo because he's also a tattoo artist.

00:10:21.430 --> 00:10:27.730
Jena Winberry Carr: And of course, it's of a cat, but he also works in other mediums and he draws a lot of cats.

00:10:27.730 --> 00:10:31.270
Jena Winberry Carr: And so everything in our store is cat themed.

00:10:31.270 --> 00:10:33.270
Jena Winberry Carr: So we do have a lot of art.

00:10:33.270 --> 00:10:40.170
Jena Winberry Carr: We have a lot of prints, but every single one of those is going to either have a cat in it or be related to cats in some way.

00:10:40.170 --> 00:10:45.310
Jena Winberry Carr: So when you walk in the door, you'll see the current show that's on display.

00:10:45.310 --> 00:10:52.890
Jena Winberry Carr: And with each show, we do a collaborative art piece where we either will have something printed locally or we'll do a t-shirt.

00:10:52.890 --> 00:10:59.970
Jena Winberry Carr: Right now, we have two limited edition prints that we did with Nick for sale as well as his original artwork.

00:10:59.970 --> 00:11:05.850
Jena Winberry Carr: And then we also have more boutique type items, like home decor items.

00:11:05.850 --> 00:11:11.410
Jena Winberry Carr: We have hair clips and stickers and notepads and t-shirt.

00:11:11.410 --> 00:11:15.050
Jena Winberry Carr: But again, everything is leads back to cat.

00:11:15.050 --> 00:11:16.130
Michelle Fern: Leads back to cats.

00:11:16.130 --> 00:11:18.650
Michelle Fern: You also have cats in your shop.

00:11:18.650 --> 00:11:19.010
Jena Winberry Carr: We do.

00:11:19.530 --> 00:11:20.490
Vita Manzoli: Or an option.

00:11:20.490 --> 00:11:20.890
Vita Manzoli: Yes.

00:11:20.890 --> 00:11:23.510
Jena Winberry Carr: So we have Matt, my partner.

00:11:23.510 --> 00:11:29.990
Jena Winberry Carr: He helped me create, was a vision I had in my mind and he made it reality.

00:11:29.990 --> 00:11:41.610
Jena Winberry Carr: We built a very large cat enclosure that has a catwalk that then leads across the whole length of the store to our front window where we have another smaller enclosure.

00:11:41.610 --> 00:11:45.150
Jena Winberry Carr: So the cat can kind of venture into different areas.

00:11:45.150 --> 00:11:50.950
Jena Winberry Carr: And they can also then have their privacy if they don't feel like visiting with people.

00:11:50.950 --> 00:11:52.290
Jena Winberry Carr: They can get up high.

00:11:52.290 --> 00:11:54.310
Jena Winberry Carr: They can go into the back room.

00:11:54.330 --> 00:11:59.490
Jena Winberry Carr: So we have little doors in the wall that lead into a hidden enclosure.

00:11:59.490 --> 00:12:08.250
Jena Winberry Carr: But it's a really, really great way for cats to get exposure, especially right now when adoptions are very low across the board at Cat Rescues.

00:12:08.250 --> 00:12:17.650
Jena Winberry Carr: We've only been open four weeks and we have had nine adoptions, which doesn't sound that high, but it feels high.

00:12:17.710 --> 00:12:23.290
Jena Winberry Carr: It's for those of us who are fostering all the time and know how long it can take some time.

00:12:23.290 --> 00:12:26.870
Jena Winberry Carr: You know, TippedEars, we've had some cats in foster for over a year.

00:12:26.870 --> 00:12:29.650
Jena Winberry Carr: And so we're trying to get these cats in front of people.

00:12:29.650 --> 00:12:40.850
Jena Winberry Carr: We're also trying to spread the joy of cats, whether that's through people finding an item, like a piece of artwork or a silly cat pen for coming in.

00:12:40.850 --> 00:12:48.430
Jena Winberry Carr: We have customers who come in and when they leave, they'll say, thank you so much for the serotonin, because they'll come in and just get to snuggle with cats and then...

00:12:48.430 --> 00:12:49.750
Michelle Fern: I mean, it's a good idea.

00:12:49.750 --> 00:13:02.390
Jena Winberry Carr: Sometimes they buy some things, sometimes they don't, but it brought a little bit of joy to their day and that was one of the big goals for us in terms of the space we wanted to create and the service we want to provide as community members.

00:13:02.390 --> 00:13:05.270
Michelle Fern: Okay, we're going to be right back after this break.

00:13:09.490 --> 00:13:12.890
Announcer: Pet Greens is proud to support Cattitude on Pet Life Radio.

00:13:13.550 --> 00:13:22.770
Announcer: Our small family farm produces live organic cat grass, catnip and soft chew treats packed with green nutrition to help your pets truly thrive inside.

00:13:22.770 --> 00:13:34.330
Announcer: We're partnering with pioneer cat behavior expert and bestselling author Pam Johnson-Bennett to help indoor cats live their best lives with indoor enrichment tips for their parents.

00:13:34.330 --> 00:13:51.250
Pam Johnson-Bennett: I'm very careful about the products that I choose because I have built a reputation over four decades where cat parents trust me and they know that when I recommend a brand or talk about a particular product, they know it came from my heart and I really believe it.

00:13:51.250 --> 00:13:53.730
Pam Johnson-Bennett: I've done my research with Pet Greens.

00:13:53.730 --> 00:13:55.350
Pam Johnson-Bennett: I love the products.

00:13:55.350 --> 00:13:56.750
Pam Johnson-Bennett: I love the quality.

00:13:56.750 --> 00:14:03.350
Pam Johnson-Bennett: And one of the things that I feel just stands out is the education that Pet Greens provides.

00:14:03.350 --> 00:14:05.670
Pam Johnson-Bennett: They guide you every step of the way.

00:14:05.670 --> 00:14:06.750
Pam Johnson-Bennett: It's a relationship.

00:14:07.050 --> 00:14:13.630
Pam Johnson-Bennett: I know how much they love cats and how much they love cat welfare and cat health.

00:14:13.630 --> 00:14:15.810
Pam Johnson-Bennett: And that's their motivation.

00:14:15.810 --> 00:14:22.250

00:15:41.630 --> 00:15:47.530
Announcer: Let's Talk Pest on Pet Life Radio, Pet Life Radio, Pet Life radio.com.

00:15:59.075 --> 00:16:00.355
Michelle Fern: Welcome back, everyone.

00:16:00.355 --> 00:16:05.955
Michelle Fern: We're talking to Jena, co-founder of the Cool Cat Collective, and Vita.

00:16:05.955 --> 00:16:11.715
Michelle Fern: She's the TNR-based rescue partner of the Cool Cat Collective from TippedEars.

00:16:11.715 --> 00:16:30.495
Michelle Fern: So, Jena, so you're brick and mortar, you have events that are local, but I looked on your site, and between the, I don't know, a week or so ago, and then, or two weeks ago, and then when I looked recently, you have a lot of cat stuff, as you were talking about, lots of cat merchandise.

00:16:30.495 --> 00:16:33.895
Michelle Fern: So, do you ship everywhere or just US?

00:16:33.895 --> 00:16:36.755
Jena Winberry Carr: So currently, we're just shipping continental US.

00:16:36.755 --> 00:16:56.515
Jena Winberry Carr: I like to always perfect something before expanding it, and right now, since we just opened the brick and mortar, we actually didn't even have shipping for the first two weeks because I just wanted to focus on making sure our in-store experience was how we wanted it to be and make any changes we needed to make without being distracted by the larger reach.

00:16:57.195 --> 00:17:15.475
Jena Winberry Carr: Then we expanded to the Continental US, and then once we feel like that is fully running the way we want it to operate, and we've done everything we need to do to make that process as fluid and smooth as possible, then we'll look at potentially moving outside of the Continental US.

00:17:15.475 --> 00:17:30.735
Michelle Fern: Do you think that your store is unique because in most cases, or what I've seen mostly out there in the cat world, there's cafes, cat cafes, and there's rescue shelters, and there's not a lot of, you know, in the middle.

00:17:30.735 --> 00:17:34.915
Michelle Fern: I see yours as more in the middle because you're not a cat cafe.

00:17:34.915 --> 00:17:39.755
Michelle Fern: There's no, as far as I know, there's no food or drink for sale.

00:17:39.755 --> 00:17:41.535
Michelle Fern: You don't charge admission.

00:17:41.535 --> 00:17:43.495
Michelle Fern: You have product for sale.

00:17:43.495 --> 00:18:00.715
Michelle Fern: Do you think that this is an idea that can be replicated easily in other locations for cat enthusiasts that want to do, you know, contribute something more than just maybe working for a shelter or adopting, but really want to just do something exciting?

00:18:00.715 --> 00:18:04.575
Jena Winberry Carr: You know, I think it would be wonderful if that became the case.

00:18:04.575 --> 00:18:29.495
Jena Winberry Carr: Part of the reason we created the model we did was because the existing models, while wonderful in their own right, weren't something I wanted to do, partly because I do think with something like a cat cafe that really speaks to people who already know they love cats, who already maybe know they want to adopt a cat, and also have the funds to be able to spend that money to go in to visit with cats.

00:18:29.495 --> 00:18:41.575
Jena Winberry Carr: We wanted to kind of take a little bit of that pressure off while still giving people the ability to enjoy cats and potentially find their new best friend, maybe even if they weren't looking for it.

00:18:41.575 --> 00:18:45.035
Jena Winberry Carr: And also it's just a very different community space.

00:18:45.355 --> 00:18:53.215
Jena Winberry Carr: We are hoping to do kind of more education events around maybe like a TNR 101 type class.

00:18:53.215 --> 00:19:12.475
Jena Winberry Carr: We really want to bring a lot of awareness about what everyone in the community can do to have an impact, whether it's learning about TNR, whether it's fostering, whether it's simply gaining the education to understand when to leave kittens alone, or what to do when you find a cat in your backyard.

00:19:12.575 --> 00:19:17.815
Jena Winberry Carr: I cannot tell you how many people come into the store just to tell me, there's a cat in my yard, what do I do?

00:19:17.815 --> 00:19:19.095
Michelle Fern: Oh my gosh.

00:19:19.095 --> 00:19:33.795
Jena Winberry Carr: It's been really interesting because we've been able to talk to all these people about TNR, about community cat, about the overpopulation problem, and also just about the fact that there are people whose cats are outdoors and they might wander into your yard, but we don't kidnap cat.

00:19:34.575 --> 00:19:44.115
Jena Winberry Carr: We always want to make sure if they're the cat that's wandering into your yard, that you talk to your neighbors, that if you need to, you take it to a vet to get its chip bread.

00:19:44.115 --> 00:19:48.755
Jena Winberry Carr: You look around before you then take that cat somewhere away from its home.

00:19:48.755 --> 00:19:50.855
Jena Winberry Carr: It's been a really interesting experience.

00:19:50.855 --> 00:19:52.175
Michelle Fern: Hey, I have a question for you.

00:19:52.175 --> 00:19:55.955
Michelle Fern: This is a little off-subject, but it's one of these things.

00:19:55.955 --> 00:20:00.915
Michelle Fern: Are you indoor cat or outdoor cat are mixed as far as prepping?

00:20:00.915 --> 00:20:02.655
Michelle Fern: Usually, it's indoor, indoor, outdoor.

00:20:02.755 --> 00:20:05.415
Michelle Fern: If you're the cat pet parent.

00:20:05.415 --> 00:20:08.535
Jena Winberry Carr: We're indoor only in terms of pet cat.

00:20:08.535 --> 00:20:17.095
Michelle Fern: In Europe, most of the people I've had on the show from Europe have been from UK, and they're big on indoor outdoor.

00:20:17.095 --> 00:20:24.235
Michelle Fern: I had a neighbor that was indoor outdoor, and I thought it was a stray, and I was feeding his cat for a long time.

00:20:25.895 --> 00:20:34.155
Michelle Fern: For me, it's because there's hossums and coyotes and raccoons, and it's hot.

00:20:34.155 --> 00:20:35.395
Michelle Fern: South Florida is hot.

00:20:35.555 --> 00:20:42.215
Michelle Fern: I know California can get hot too, but I think of the dangers out there, but they don't have some of those dangers in the UK.

00:20:42.215 --> 00:20:51.675
Jena Winberry Carr: Yeah, I think it really varies on the community that you're in, and also how well-versed your community is in cat and community members.

00:20:51.675 --> 00:21:09.135
Jena Winberry Carr: You look at some place like Turkey, you look at how cats are really seeing more as part of the community, and they have their own rights, and the community takes care of them as part of community members, whereas very different here, it's much more individualistic.

00:21:10.235 --> 00:21:18.555
Jena Winberry Carr: Vita pointed out that in the UK, cats have an actual right to roam by law, whereas you don't have that here.

00:21:18.555 --> 00:21:22.355
Jena Winberry Carr: That probably also makes a big impact in what people choose to do.

00:21:22.855 --> 00:21:25.235
Michelle Fern: That's really interesting, because I had no idea.

00:21:25.235 --> 00:21:33.615
Michelle Fern: And I think also, and I live in more of a city, you know, suburbs, but still city, compared to some of the other areas.

00:21:33.615 --> 00:21:38.355
Michelle Fern: I'm sure if I lived in the country, I'd be much more open to like indoor outdoor.

00:21:38.355 --> 00:21:42.535
Michelle Fern: All right, let's get back to the Cool Cat Collective.

00:21:42.535 --> 00:21:48.655
Michelle Fern: So, Jena, I know you have some exciting events coming up, but you also talked about some future events.

00:21:48.655 --> 00:21:54.095
Michelle Fern: So if anybody is in California, traveling to Southern California, they can attend.

00:21:54.095 --> 00:21:58.395
Michelle Fern: So what is some of these events that you're thinking about having at the Cool Cat Collective?

00:21:58.395 --> 00:22:02.955
Jena Winberry Carr: Well, events that we currently have already on the book scheduled.

00:22:02.955 --> 00:22:12.335
Jena Winberry Carr: We have our next art show, which is called Monster Cats, so that people can kind of start their spooky season off, and that will run through Halloween.

00:22:12.335 --> 00:22:22.395
Jena Winberry Carr: And then we are also working on a collaborative art show with a bookstore across the street called Page Against the Machine.

00:22:22.395 --> 00:22:26.815
Jena Winberry Carr: And that is going to be the Childless Cat Lady artwork show.

00:22:26.815 --> 00:22:35.535
Jena Winberry Carr: And so we will have half of the artwork over here, they will have half of the artwork over there, and that will run from September 27th through November 8th.

00:22:35.535 --> 00:22:46.775
Jena Winberry Carr: In addition to that, we are in talks with our rescue partner about doing a TNR 101 kind of free educational meetup class.

00:22:47.315 --> 00:22:53.215
Jena Winberry Carr: And we hope to add more events including a cat crochet class.

00:22:53.215 --> 00:22:55.935
Michelle Fern: Have you considered a virtual event?

00:22:55.935 --> 00:22:57.755
Jena Winberry Carr: We might do that.

00:22:57.755 --> 00:23:03.175
Michelle Fern: Making it virtual as well for those of us that are like me across the country?

00:23:03.175 --> 00:23:21.315
Jena Winberry Carr: Yeah, so when we do have a like a speaker come or if we do a TNR 101 or something like that, we will do a live stream most likely as well, so that people can tune in to it and also have it recorded, so that people can then go to our website and see it later.

00:23:21.315 --> 00:23:32.935
Jena Winberry Carr: And also in terms of our art show, we do have all of the art pieces on our website as well in the shop for sale, so people can kind of peruse the art show by just clicking.

00:23:32.935 --> 00:23:37.395
Jena Winberry Carr: Currently, because it's Nick Vargas, if you click his name, you can see all of his art pieces.

00:23:37.395 --> 00:23:45.295
Jena Winberry Carr: In the future, we'll have a tag for each art show, so you can click the tag and then look at all the pieces, because they'll be from a variety of different artists.

00:23:45.295 --> 00:23:49.735
Michelle Fern: Any message for any of our listeners out there listening in Catland?

00:23:49.735 --> 00:24:05.675
Jena Winberry Carr: I think there are so many different ways people can get involved, ways big and small, even just resharing cats that are available for adoption on social media, or when people come into our store and take pictures of the cats and share them with their network.

00:24:05.675 --> 00:24:13.055
Jena Winberry Carr: Seeing equal saved is a great motto to follow in that way, and all those little actions add up to saving lives.

00:24:13.055 --> 00:24:15.075
Michelle Fern: Thank you so much for coming on.

00:24:15.075 --> 00:24:15.915
Michelle Fern: Thank you, Vita.

00:24:15.915 --> 00:24:16.835
Michelle Fern: Thank you, Jena.

00:24:16.835 --> 00:24:19.815
Michelle Fern: Thank you so much for coming on, Cattitude.

00:24:19.815 --> 00:24:25.215
Michelle Fern: I hope to hear and see great things from the Cool Cat Collective.

00:24:25.215 --> 00:24:29.715
Michelle Fern: And hey, when I get to California again, which I'm not sure when that's going to be, I'll come visit.

00:24:29.715 --> 00:24:30.475
Jena Winberry Carr: Oh, wonderful.

00:24:30.475 --> 00:24:32.035
Jena Winberry Carr: We'd be happy to have you.

00:24:32.035 --> 00:24:33.855
Michelle Fern: I hope you all enjoyed this show.

00:24:33.855 --> 00:24:36.195
Michelle Fern: I am so passionate about TNR.

00:24:36.675 --> 00:24:39.055
Michelle Fern: Please check out the Cool Cat Collective.

00:24:39.055 --> 00:24:41.535
Michelle Fern: The website is coolcatcollective.co.

00:24:43.335 --> 00:24:45.975
Michelle Fern: Thanks to my guests, Jena and Vita.

00:24:45.975 --> 00:24:53.095
Michelle Fern: I want to thank my cat crew, Dennis, Charlotte and Molly for all you do and how much you teach me about cats.

00:24:53.095 --> 00:24:55.215
Michelle Fern: Thanks to everyone listening to Cattitude.

00:24:55.215 --> 00:24:57.015
Michelle Fern: I appreciate you so much.

00:24:57.015 --> 00:25:03.615
Michelle Fern: And of course, thanks to my amazing producer, Mark Winter, for working his magic and making us sound incredible.

00:25:04.015 --> 00:25:07.255
Michelle Fern: Now, remember, lose the attitude, have Cattitude.
