Arden Moore: Yep, I am talking about taking a look at the 140 years of history of the American Kennel Club.
00:01:11.220 --> 00:01:19.260
Arden Moore: And here to be our possum guide is the Executive Secretary of the American Kennel Club.
00:01:19.260 --> 00:01:22.820
Arden Moore: Please give pause and applause to Gina DiNardo.
00:01:23.480 --> 00:01:25.240
Arden Moore: Welcome, welcome Gina.
00:01:25.240 --> 00:01:27.040
Gina DiNardo: Oh, thank you for having me.
00:01:27.040 --> 00:01:28.500
Gina DiNardo: So happy to be here.
00:01:28.520 --> 00:01:31.240
Arden Moore: 140 years.
00:01:31.240 --> 00:01:36.420
Arden Moore: That is older than me and my producer Mark Winner combined.
00:01:36.420 --> 00:01:37.160
Arden Moore: That's a lot of time.
00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:38.960
Gina DiNardo: And many, many, many companies.
00:01:38.960 --> 00:01:44.520
Gina DiNardo: We are really so thrilled to be honoring and celebrating our 140th.
00:01:44.520 --> 00:01:48.780
Gina DiNardo: You know, we started back in September of 1884, if you can imagine.
00:01:51.240 --> 00:01:53.560
Arden Moore: There was no Google, there was no TV.
00:01:53.560 --> 00:01:56.420
Arden Moore: You know, they're gents and top hats, right?
00:01:56.420 --> 00:01:57.360
Gina DiNardo: That's exactly right.
00:01:57.360 --> 00:02:07.880
Gina DiNardo: And we were in fact started by 12 sportsmen who responded to a call for a meeting and they met in the rooms of the Philadelphia Kennel Club that fall.
00:02:07.880 --> 00:02:11.260
Gina DiNardo: And each member was a delegate for a club.
00:02:11.320 --> 00:02:16.200
Gina DiNardo: And they created back then our first Constitution and bylaws.
00:02:16.200 --> 00:02:18.400
Gina DiNardo: And we went from there.
00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:21.940
Arden Moore: So do you have any idea who these, like any of these 12 men were?
00:02:21.940 --> 00:02:25.540
Arden Moore: Were any of them like, I don't know, somebody famous like Benjamin Franklin?
00:02:25.540 --> 00:02:27.240
Arden Moore: Oh, no, he was already gone.
00:02:27.240 --> 00:02:30.360
Arden Moore: Sorry, I just flunked history, Gina.
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:38.940
Gina DiNardo: Yeah, so like you can do some, like we had Major Taylor, who was famous in the war and a gentleman named Elliott Smith.
00:02:38.940 --> 00:02:48.480
Gina DiNardo: Back then, one of our most famous founders was August Belmont from, yes, that very famous family that we all know from New York City.
00:02:48.480 --> 00:02:53.820
Gina DiNardo: He actually in 1888 became AKC's fourth president.
00:02:53.820 --> 00:03:02.360
Gina DiNardo: And he actually started our AKC Gazette, which is our sports journal with his own money back in 1887.
00:03:02.360 --> 00:03:09.000
Gina DiNardo: And since then, the AKC Gazette is the second longest continuously published sporting journal in the country.
00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:09.480
Arden Moore: Wow.
00:03:09.480 --> 00:03:10.060
Arden Moore: Yeah.
00:03:10.060 --> 00:03:12.660
Arden Moore: 1889 is when it first came out?
00:03:12.660 --> 00:03:13.260
Gina DiNardo: 1887.
00:03:13.260 --> 00:03:14.940
Arden Moore: Oh, 1887.
00:03:14.940 --> 00:03:21.260
Arden Moore: You know, these days with media, to be around for 10 years is an applause generator.
00:03:21.260 --> 00:03:28.100
Arden Moore: But to be around over this duration, what do you think has kept the AKC Gazette still being published?
00:03:28.100 --> 00:03:38.340
Gina DiNardo: Well, because it contains, you know, back in the day, it was the only way people could access what was going on in the world of dogs around them.
00:03:38.340 --> 00:03:42.320
Gina DiNardo: And as sports, as the sport of purebred dogs grew, right?
00:03:42.320 --> 00:03:46.860
Gina DiNardo: It was this journal where you could find out who had won and who was being shunned.
00:03:46.860 --> 00:03:50.560
Gina DiNardo: There's a little bit of gossip and intrigue, who was judging.
00:03:50.680 --> 00:03:56.060
Gina DiNardo: Like everything that there was to know was published in the AKC Gazette.
00:03:56.060 --> 00:04:02.600
Gina DiNardo: So from there, even today, you'll turn and you look, we have our discipline in there, who's approved to judge.
00:04:02.600 --> 00:04:03.960
Gina DiNardo: So it's still to this day.
00:04:03.960 --> 00:04:05.800
Arden Moore: Well, it's got relevancy, yeah?
00:04:05.800 --> 00:04:06.660
Gina DiNardo: Exactly.
00:04:06.660 --> 00:04:08.380
Gina DiNardo: And so people still read it.
00:04:08.380 --> 00:04:09.380
Gina DiNardo: They can't wait for it to come out.
00:04:09.380 --> 00:04:10.940
Gina DiNardo: It's a monthly and we publish it.
00:04:10.940 --> 00:04:11.920
Gina DiNardo: It's only digital now.
00:04:11.920 --> 00:04:12.400
Gina DiNardo: That's good.
00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:13.560
Arden Moore: Save some trees.
00:04:13.560 --> 00:04:14.480
Gina DiNardo: Yeah, exactly.
00:04:14.480 --> 00:04:15.600
Arden Moore: Hey, everyone.
00:04:15.600 --> 00:04:17.520
Arden Moore: We're speaking with Gina DiNardo.
00:04:17.720 --> 00:04:20.800
Arden Moore: She's the Executive Secretary of the American Kennel Club.
00:04:20.800 --> 00:04:25.500
Arden Moore: And we're going to dive into its rich history after we take this quick break.
00:04:25.500 --> 00:04:26.940
Arden Moore: And you know the drill, guys.
00:04:26.940 --> 00:04:27.780
Arden Moore: Come on.
00:04:27.780 --> 00:04:29.040
Arden Moore: Sit, stay.
00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:30.460
Arden Moore: We'll be right back.
00:04:32.020 --> 00:04:33.880
Announcer: Time for a pause.
00:04:33.880 --> 00:04:35.760
Announcer: For furry ones, actually.
00:04:35.760 --> 00:04:37.260

Announcer: Now back to your fetching host, America's pet edutainer, Arden Moore.
00:05:43.060 --> 00:05:45.680
Arden Moore: Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on PetLife Radio.
00:05:45.680 --> 00:05:47.100
Arden Moore: I'm your host, Arden Moore.
00:05:47.100 --> 00:05:56.720
Arden Moore: I have been looking forward to this, to be able to speak to Gina DiNardo of the American Kennel Club to talk the history of this amazing organization.
00:05:57.260 --> 00:06:07.720
Arden Moore: She was just talking about the fact that it's AKC Gazette now digital is still alive and wagging its tail and barking out great news.
00:06:07.720 --> 00:06:08.380
Arden Moore: I love that.
00:06:09.080 --> 00:06:14.540
Arden Moore: I teach Pet First Aid and I always have fun with my students because I make it fun and practical.
00:06:14.540 --> 00:06:16.500
Arden Moore: It's called Pet First Aid for You.
00:06:16.500 --> 00:06:21.940
Arden Moore: So we have a thing Gina that says how to do a mutt giver.
00:06:21.940 --> 00:06:26.300
Arden Moore: What do you do when you don't have a commercial muzzle and the dog is injured?
00:06:26.300 --> 00:06:28.120
Arden Moore: It'll come back to the AKC.
00:06:28.120 --> 00:06:37.040
Arden Moore: I always point you guys out because there has to be two different ways to do a makeshift muzzle on a dog because of their muzzle.
00:06:37.400 --> 00:06:41.860
Arden Moore: So we use a leash for dogs like the Labrador Retriever.
00:06:41.940 --> 00:06:50.800
Arden Moore: But then we use a leash rolled in a towel like a pool noodle to be able to render aid to a dog that's a brachiocephalic breed, a pooched in nose.
00:06:50.800 --> 00:06:53.640
Arden Moore: I bring this all up because you know the facts.
00:06:53.640 --> 00:07:01.100
Arden Moore: Now everybody, what was the most popular breed for 31 years until two years ago?
00:07:01.100 --> 00:07:02.720
Gina DiNardo: Oh, the Labrador Retriever.
00:07:02.720 --> 00:07:06.220
Gina DiNardo: It was by far the most popular breed for a very long time.
00:07:06.300 --> 00:07:07.700
Arden Moore: That's a good streak.
00:07:07.700 --> 00:07:08.540
Gina DiNardo: Yes.
00:07:08.540 --> 00:07:08.840
Gina DiNardo: Why?
00:07:08.840 --> 00:07:20.040
Gina DiNardo: Because they're so trainable, they're hearty, they are friendly, fitable, they love to be with people, they generally get along well with other dogs.
00:07:20.040 --> 00:07:29.920
Gina DiNardo: They're just not as demanding in terms of training as some other dogs and pretty easy to care for.
00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:31.920
Gina DiNardo: That fits in with a lot of nice lifestyle.
00:07:31.920 --> 00:07:34.120
Arden Moore: It's going pretty good for the Labradors.
00:07:34.500 --> 00:07:37.100
Arden Moore: And then, that's my high-tech drummer.
00:07:37.100 --> 00:07:37.800
Arden Moore: What happened?
00:07:37.800 --> 00:07:41.640
Arden Moore: Same many feets, some new breed came on to the top spot.
00:07:41.640 --> 00:07:46.860
Gina DiNardo: Yes, the French Bulldog now for the last two years is a hold spot number one.
00:07:46.860 --> 00:07:52.600
Gina DiNardo: And it was creeping up over the last decade and we saw it reach the top 10 and the top five.
00:07:52.600 --> 00:07:56.220
Gina DiNardo: And we saw it continue to increase in popularity.
00:07:56.220 --> 00:08:00.860
Gina DiNardo: And especially in the city, I see them here in New York City all over the place.
00:08:00.860 --> 00:08:03.400
Gina DiNardo: They're a nice, small, compact breed.
00:08:03.480 --> 00:08:06.800
Gina DiNardo: They're fun, they're hearty again, they have great personalities.
00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:07.760
Arden Moore: And they snore.
00:08:07.760 --> 00:08:08.460
Gina DiNardo: They do.
00:08:08.460 --> 00:08:11.800
Gina DiNardo: My brother has them and they snore tremendously.
00:08:11.800 --> 00:08:13.480
Arden Moore: Well, at least you can blame it on the dog.
00:08:13.480 --> 00:08:15.020
Arden Moore: That's always a good thing.
00:08:15.020 --> 00:08:15.820
Arden Moore: So that's pretty cool.
00:08:15.820 --> 00:08:23.480
Arden Moore: But then this year, your 140th year, the American Kennel Club added breed number 201.
00:08:23.480 --> 00:08:24.760
Arden Moore: Tell us about that one.
00:08:24.760 --> 00:08:25.040
Arden Moore: Right.
00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:32.260
Gina DiNardo: So we added the Lancashire Healer, which is not a new breed by any means, but it is new to the AKC.
00:08:32.600 --> 00:08:35.420
Gina DiNardo: It's a small black and tan breed.
00:08:35.420 --> 00:08:37.800
Gina DiNardo: Again, you said number 201.
00:08:37.800 --> 00:08:41.540
Gina DiNardo: It's sturdy, developed as a drover.
00:08:41.540 --> 00:08:43.660
Arden Moore: Where does it hail from, this breed?
00:08:43.660 --> 00:08:46.680
Gina DiNardo: Well, from that part of Lancashire, isn't it?
00:08:46.680 --> 00:08:54.300
Gina DiNardo: From, well, first, it became really popular in the UK, but I think it's come all the way from down under.
00:08:54.400 --> 00:08:56.240
Arden Moore: Oh, all right.
00:08:56.240 --> 00:09:03.120
Arden Moore: Well, years ago, I had a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and at the time, no one really knew what a corgi was.
00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:05.940
Arden Moore: Corgis are rising in rank too, right?
00:09:05.940 --> 00:09:06.320
Gina DiNardo: Yes.
00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:07.700
Gina DiNardo: People love their corgis.
00:09:07.700 --> 00:09:21.400
Gina DiNardo: I think the Pembroke is a little bit more popular right now than the cardigan, but we see a lot of, especially on social media, a lot of pages and accounts devoted to Pembrokes and the meetup groups and such.
00:09:21.500 --> 00:09:24.340
Gina DiNardo: And there are a lot of breeds that are very popular.
00:09:24.340 --> 00:09:30.440
Gina DiNardo: And, you know, I also just point out there's so many rare breeds that would make great pets for people.
00:09:30.440 --> 00:09:32.640
Gina DiNardo: And you can learn about those as well.
00:09:32.640 --> 00:09:41.680
Gina DiNardo: And, you know, if you don't want the common dog that everyone has, you can find 100 other breeds that fit your lifestyle.
00:09:41.680 --> 00:09:45.360
Arden Moore: And tell us the website again for you, because we'll be repeating it.
00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:45.580
Gina DiNardo: Sure.
00:09:45.580 --> 00:09:49.380
Gina DiNardo: The American Kennel Club's website, our initials, akc.org.
00:09:49.860 --> 00:09:59.340
Gina DiNardo: It's a great reference and resource for really all things dog, purebred, mixed breed, our sports, health, training tips, you name it.
00:09:59.340 --> 00:10:01.520
Arden Moore: So before we go to break, I'm going to test you.
00:10:01.520 --> 00:10:03.700
Arden Moore: Pretend you're on dog Jeopardy.
00:10:03.700 --> 00:10:06.140
Arden Moore: It is the final Jeopardy question.
00:10:06.140 --> 00:10:12.700
Arden Moore: What was the first breed recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1884?
00:10:12.740 --> 00:10:14.020
Gina DiNardo: The very first.
00:10:14.020 --> 00:10:18.020
Gina DiNardo: Now we had the top 10 all at once.
00:10:18.020 --> 00:10:20.920
Gina DiNardo: So there was Pointer in there, English Setter in there.
00:10:20.920 --> 00:10:21.500
Arden Moore: Yeah, that's the one.
00:10:21.500 --> 00:10:24.180
Arden Moore: The English Setter Adonis.
00:10:24.180 --> 00:10:24.600
Arden Moore: Yeah.
00:10:24.600 --> 00:10:29.680
Arden Moore: What was the first breed accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1884?
00:10:29.680 --> 00:10:33.120
Arden Moore: This is your Jeopardy question in a form of a question, your answer.
00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:35.480
Gina DiNardo: What is the English Setter?
00:10:36.280 --> 00:10:39.060
Arden Moore: Alex, you're back in heaven is going whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.
00:10:39.060 --> 00:10:39.680
Arden Moore: That's awesome.
00:10:39.680 --> 00:10:40.760
Arden Moore: That's awesome.
00:10:40.760 --> 00:10:51.300
Arden Moore: We're going to talk more about the life of being the Executive Secretary for the American Kennel Club with our guest, Gina DiNardo, after we take this quick break.
00:10:51.300 --> 00:10:55.340
Arden Moore: I'm having a blast with this history lesson, if you will, with her.
00:10:55.400 --> 00:10:57.420
Arden Moore: So everybody sit, stay.
00:10:57.420 --> 00:10:58.980
Arden Moore: We'll be right back.
00:11:01.580 --> 00:11:04.760
Announcer: Time for a walk on the red carpet, of course.
00:11:04.760 --> 00:11:09.140
Announcer: Oh Behave will be back in a flash right after these messages.
00:11:49.560 --> 00:11:50.740
Announcer: Let's talk pets.
00:11:50.740 --> 00:11:51.640
Announcer: Let's talk pets.
00:11:51.640 --> 00:11:52.680
Announcer: On Pet Life Radio.
00:11:52.680 --> 00:11:54.000
Announcer: Pet Life Radio.
00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:56.480
Announcer: petliferadio.com.
00:11:56.500 --> 00:11:58.200
Jon Provost: Hi, this is Jon Provost.
00:11:58.200 --> 00:12:00.960
Jon Provost: You might remember me as Timmy from the Lassie series.
00:12:00.960 --> 00:12:07.220
Jon Provost: Well, you know, every time Lassie comes home, she always has me turn on Pet Life Radio so she can listen to Arden Moore.
00:12:07.620 --> 00:12:10.080
Jon Provost: On that show, you know, Oh Behave.
00:12:12.800 --> 00:12:14.200
Announcer: We're back from the lot.
00:12:14.200 --> 00:12:17.240
Announcer: Just check the paper and we had a record showing at the box.
00:12:17.240 --> 00:12:18.820
Announcer: The letter box, that is.
00:12:18.820 --> 00:12:20.800
Announcer: Now back to Oh Behave.
00:12:20.800 --> 00:12:22.320
Announcer: Here's Arden.
00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:25.180
Arden Moore: Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on Pet Life Radio.
00:12:25.180 --> 00:12:26.620
Arden Moore: I'm your host, Arden Moore.
00:12:26.620 --> 00:12:27.760
Arden Moore: I'm having a great time.
00:12:27.760 --> 00:12:29.420
Arden Moore: Our guest is Gina DiNardo.
00:12:29.420 --> 00:12:31.680
Arden Moore: She is with the American Kennel Club.
00:12:31.680 --> 00:12:34.560
Arden Moore: And you've been with them for a minute, right?
00:12:34.820 --> 00:12:35.940
Gina DiNardo: A minute and a half.
00:12:35.940 --> 00:12:37.040
Gina DiNardo: Almost 30 years.
00:12:37.160 --> 00:12:39.520
Gina DiNardo: I started back in 1995.
00:12:40.580 --> 00:12:42.880
Gina DiNardo: Worked through a variety of different departments.
00:12:42.880 --> 00:12:44.420
Arden Moore: What was your first gig there?
00:12:44.420 --> 00:12:51.120
Gina DiNardo: I worked in the event plans department, which processes all of the club's applications to hold events.
00:12:51.120 --> 00:12:58.420
Gina DiNardo: And I was part of just the approval, you know, the system of approving and stamping and taking their money and recording it.
00:12:58.420 --> 00:13:02.260
Arden Moore: What made you say I want to go to AKC instead of KFC?
00:13:02.260 --> 00:13:03.080
Arden Moore: I don't know.
00:13:03.080 --> 00:13:07.240
Gina DiNardo: I grew up showing and breeding dogs with my family as our sport and hobby.
00:13:07.320 --> 00:13:08.400
Arden Moore: What was the breed?
00:13:08.400 --> 00:13:15.760
Gina DiNardo: We started with Great Danes and Doberman Pinschers, and then had a variety of other breeds as we showed as junior handlers.
00:13:15.760 --> 00:13:20.420
Gina DiNardo: We used to be able to really get whatever little breed we wanted to show for juniors.
00:13:20.420 --> 00:13:22.540
Gina DiNardo: So I had a lot of experience with different breeds.
00:13:22.540 --> 00:13:24.560
Arden Moore: Was this in the New York area or where?
00:13:24.560 --> 00:13:31.240
Gina DiNardo: Yeah, I grew up in Connecticut, so Northeast and I just went to dog shows basically my whole life.
00:13:31.300 --> 00:13:38.520
Gina DiNardo: So it was second nature to me and then after college, I moved to the city and I was like, oh, it would be great to work at AKC, wouldn't it?
00:13:38.520 --> 00:13:43.660
Gina DiNardo: Luckily, I got myself an entry level job there and that was 30 years ago and here I am.
00:13:43.660 --> 00:13:48.060
Arden Moore: So you've been there 30 years, not 140, just to everybody know.
00:13:48.060 --> 00:13:49.820
Arden Moore: She's just 30.
00:13:49.820 --> 00:13:54.360
Arden Moore: But what do you think about the role that the American Kennel Club plays now?
00:13:54.360 --> 00:13:59.600
Arden Moore: It started with these gents in 1884 and now look where they've evolved.
00:13:59.660 --> 00:14:01.980
Arden Moore: There's so much to the AKC.
00:14:01.980 --> 00:14:04.720
Gina DiNardo: There's so much to the AKC that most people don't know.
00:14:04.720 --> 00:14:08.980
Gina DiNardo: Like a lot of people will think about, oh, there's those dog shows on TV.
00:14:08.980 --> 00:14:10.740
Gina DiNardo: But we are so much more.
00:14:10.740 --> 00:14:20.580
Gina DiNardo: We have a government relations department that lobbies and protects the rights of all dog owners and helps create good dog law in communities across the country.
00:14:20.580 --> 00:14:26.220
Gina DiNardo: We have a canine health foundation that raises millions of dollars for canine health research.
00:14:26.360 --> 00:14:30.440
Gina DiNardo: We have a 24-hour recovery service for lost pets.
00:14:30.440 --> 00:14:40.660
Gina DiNardo: We have an amazing library and an archive with all of the historical information, going back to 1887 when our first gazettes were published.
00:14:40.660 --> 00:14:46.580
Gina DiNardo: We have awards and we recognize canine heroes and working dogs.
00:14:46.580 --> 00:14:56.020
Gina DiNardo: And we have a patriotic puppy program where we're helping raise dogs that are desperately needed for the protection of our borders and our countries.
00:14:56.020 --> 00:15:03.280
Gina DiNardo: In fact, through our patriotic puppy program, we have six dogs that are currently working with the Capitol Police.
00:15:03.280 --> 00:15:05.600
Gina DiNardo: And we have 28 different sports.
00:15:05.600 --> 00:15:07.700
Gina DiNardo: We're not just dog shows or field trials.
00:15:07.700 --> 00:15:12.660
Gina DiNardo: We have rally and obedience and lore coursing and fast cat.
00:15:12.660 --> 00:15:13.780
Arden Moore: No bowling?
00:15:13.780 --> 00:15:14.520
Gina DiNardo: No bowling yet.
00:15:14.800 --> 00:15:18.180
Gina DiNardo: But we, we bowling dogs now.
00:15:18.180 --> 00:15:20.660
Gina DiNardo: And then we also have just great training programs.
00:15:20.660 --> 00:15:24.860
Gina DiNardo: We have a star puppy program for basic good manners for puppies.
00:15:24.860 --> 00:15:27.720
Gina DiNardo: We have something called Canine Good Citizen.
00:15:27.720 --> 00:15:30.980
Arden Moore: My two dogs, I have Canine Good Citizen, Conan and Emma.
00:15:30.980 --> 00:15:31.560
Gina DiNardo: Very good.
00:15:31.560 --> 00:15:33.140
Arden Moore: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:15:33.220 --> 00:15:41.900
Gina DiNardo: It's a easy, pretty easy trainable 10 step test that shows your dog gets along well with others and is good in the community.
00:15:41.900 --> 00:15:46.740
Gina DiNardo: And a lot of like apartment buildings will use it as a way to, you know, accept a dog.
00:15:46.740 --> 00:15:53.420
Gina DiNardo: Some insurance, homeowners insurance companies will give you discounts if you have a CGC dog.
00:15:53.420 --> 00:15:55.060
Gina DiNardo: So we put so much to it.
00:15:55.060 --> 00:15:58.080
Arden Moore: Mine went on to become certified therapy pets.
00:15:58.080 --> 00:16:08.540
Arden Moore: So yeah, I think the Canine Good Citizen is one of the best things because dogs are taut manors and then they know what's going on.
00:16:08.540 --> 00:16:15.360
Arden Moore: And like you say, they get invited more to do things and their parents can go into housing and all that.
00:16:15.360 --> 00:16:17.620
Arden Moore: So that's an important thing, Gina.
00:16:17.620 --> 00:16:23.460
Gina DiNardo: You know, and AKC really just wants everyone to be a responsible dog owner and, you know, enjoy their bond with their dog.
00:16:23.460 --> 00:16:27.240
Gina DiNardo: And we try to provide as many resources as we can for that.
00:16:27.240 --> 00:16:30.180
Arden Moore: So we have 201 recognized dog breeds.
00:16:30.680 --> 00:16:34.160
Arden Moore: And one of those that watches the Best in Show and all that.
00:16:34.160 --> 00:16:42.140
Arden Moore: So by now, to be Best in Show, do you have any idea of, I know they're used to, is there seven categories?
00:16:42.140 --> 00:16:43.440
Gina DiNardo: There's still seven groups.
00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:47.240
Arden Moore: But there's zillions of dogs and breeds in each of those groups, right?
00:16:47.240 --> 00:16:47.740
Gina DiNardo: Yes.
00:16:47.740 --> 00:16:48.320
Gina DiNardo: Yes.
00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:52.700
Gina DiNardo: Somewhere between 28 and 34 dogs in each of the groups.
00:16:52.700 --> 00:16:53.420
Arden Moore: Wow.
00:16:53.420 --> 00:16:56.480
Arden Moore: So to win in your group is something.
00:16:56.480 --> 00:16:57.540
Gina DiNardo: It absolutely is.
00:16:58.540 --> 00:16:59.960
Gina DiNardo: It's huge just to get a group.
00:16:59.960 --> 00:17:00.660
Gina DiNardo: Yeah, absolutely.
00:17:00.660 --> 00:17:03.620
Arden Moore: So people are always rooting for different dogs.
00:17:03.620 --> 00:17:07.280
Arden Moore: I just want to ask, when's the last time a Labrador is ever won?
00:17:07.280 --> 00:17:07.960
Arden Moore: I don't think-
00:17:07.960 --> 00:17:09.020
Arden Moore: A best in show?
00:17:09.020 --> 00:17:10.400
Gina DiNardo: Not frequently.
00:17:10.520 --> 00:17:12.180
Arden Moore: Isn't that ironic?
00:17:12.180 --> 00:17:12.640
Arden Moore: Don't you think?
00:17:12.640 --> 00:17:13.320
Gina DiNardo: It really is.
00:17:13.320 --> 00:17:16.300
Arden Moore: I mean, they're so popular, but what happened?
00:17:16.300 --> 00:17:18.600
Arden Moore: They get beat out by the Havanese.
00:17:18.600 --> 00:17:22.660
Gina DiNardo: They get beat out by some of the more exotic breeds.
00:17:22.660 --> 00:17:30.800
Gina DiNardo: Doesn't mean there aren't good Labradors out there in the dog show world, but some of the other rare breeds do seem to rise to the top most frequently.
00:17:30.800 --> 00:17:34.280
Arden Moore: So do you ever have like a best in show party or something?
00:17:34.280 --> 00:17:37.980
Arden Moore: Or are you able to say who you're rooting for as a breed or not?
00:17:37.980 --> 00:17:40.280
Arden Moore: Because you do represent the AKC.
00:17:40.300 --> 00:17:40.700
Gina DiNardo: Right.
00:17:40.700 --> 00:17:49.660
Gina DiNardo: So if I'm at a dog show, I'm pretty neutral, but I do have, you know, just from watching a million dog shows and knowing, you know, a fair bit about dogs.
00:17:49.660 --> 00:17:52.880
Gina DiNardo: I have my favorites always, or the ones I think should win.
00:17:53.560 --> 00:17:57.000
Gina DiNardo: That's like everybody's a dog show judge outside the ring.
00:17:57.000 --> 00:17:59.480
Arden Moore: So who do you have as personal dogs?
00:17:59.480 --> 00:18:01.160
Arden Moore: Who are your four-leggers?
00:18:01.160 --> 00:18:03.160
Gina DiNardo: I have five dogs right now.
00:18:03.160 --> 00:18:05.380
Gina DiNardo: And I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
00:18:05.380 --> 00:18:06.740
Gina DiNardo: I have a Pharaoh Hound.
00:18:06.740 --> 00:18:07.860
Arden Moore: Oh, nice.
00:18:07.860 --> 00:18:08.160
Gina DiNardo: Yep.
00:18:08.160 --> 00:18:10.100
Gina DiNardo: I have a Glenevam All Terrier.
00:18:10.100 --> 00:18:11.740
Arden Moore: Oh, a friend of mine has one of those.
00:18:11.740 --> 00:18:12.360
Arden Moore: Yeah.
00:18:12.360 --> 00:18:12.640
Gina DiNardo: Yeah.
00:18:12.640 --> 00:18:17.700
Gina DiNardo: I have an English Toy Spaniel, which is like the precursor to the Cavalier King Charles.
00:18:17.700 --> 00:18:20.540
Arden Moore: We call Cavaliers a love sponge, right?
00:18:20.780 --> 00:18:20.960
Gina DiNardo: Yeah.
00:18:20.960 --> 00:18:21.560
Gina DiNardo: Yeah.
00:18:21.560 --> 00:18:23.960
Gina DiNardo: Then I have a Toy Manchester Terrier.
00:18:23.960 --> 00:18:24.800
Arden Moore: Whoa.
00:18:24.800 --> 00:18:28.680
Arden Moore: What's the difference in the Toy Manchester and I guess the Pharaoh?
00:18:28.680 --> 00:18:29.840
Arden Moore: Who's the biggest, the Pharaoh?
00:18:29.840 --> 00:18:30.900
Gina DiNardo: The Ridgeback's the biggest.
00:18:30.900 --> 00:18:32.440
Gina DiNardo: She's like 95 pounds.
00:18:32.540 --> 00:18:37.720
Gina DiNardo: Then the Toy Manchester is about six pounds, maybe eight pounds.
00:18:37.720 --> 00:18:40.440
Arden Moore: What's the six-pounder and the 95-pounder's names?
00:18:40.440 --> 00:18:42.520
Gina DiNardo: The 95-pounder, the Ridgeback is Kingsley.
00:18:42.520 --> 00:18:43.080
Arden Moore: I'm Kingsley.
00:18:44.500 --> 00:18:46.420
Gina DiNardo: The Toy Manchester's name is Jeep.
00:18:46.420 --> 00:18:46.980
Arden Moore: Jeep?
00:18:47.040 --> 00:18:47.900
Gina DiNardo: Yep, like the car.
00:18:47.900 --> 00:18:50.200
Arden Moore: Front-wheel, four-wheel drive, all-wheel drive.
00:18:50.220 --> 00:18:52.060
Gina DiNardo: It's all-wheel drive all the time.
00:18:52.060 --> 00:18:54.840
Arden Moore: So who is the boss of the bunch?
00:18:54.840 --> 00:18:56.120
Gina DiNardo: The Ridgeback for sure.
00:18:56.120 --> 00:18:59.380
Gina DiNardo: She is the queen beast, but they all get along.
00:18:59.380 --> 00:19:02.020
Gina DiNardo: I make them all get along.
00:19:02.020 --> 00:19:06.120
Arden Moore: Do you walk all five of them down the streets of New York City at the same time?
00:19:06.120 --> 00:19:06.540
Gina DiNardo: No.
00:19:06.540 --> 00:19:10.360
Gina DiNardo: I live in the suburbs, so I let them run in the backyard.
00:19:10.360 --> 00:19:11.660
Gina DiNardo: That would be a lot.
00:19:11.660 --> 00:19:12.120
Arden Moore: All right.
00:19:12.120 --> 00:19:20.460
Arden Moore: There's another thing that I wanted people to know, and you, in 1982, I understand, opened the Dog Museum of America.
00:19:20.460 --> 00:19:21.060
Arden Moore: Talk about that.
00:19:21.060 --> 00:19:24.960
Arden Moore: If people are getting a trip to the Big Apple, they should maybe make a little time.
00:19:24.960 --> 00:19:25.440
Gina DiNardo: Yes.
00:19:25.440 --> 00:19:28.000
Gina DiNardo: It originated the AKC Museum of the Dog.
00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:29.940
Gina DiNardo: It started in New York City.
00:19:29.940 --> 00:19:38.940
Gina DiNardo: It moved out, and then back in 2019, we moved it from Missouri back to AKC's headquarters.
00:19:38.940 --> 00:20:02.280
Gina DiNardo: At 101 Park Avenue on the ground floor is the AKC Museum of the Dog, which has just one of the largest collections of dog art in the world, and lots of educational interactive displays, programs for children, a great place to stop right outside Grand Central if you're a tourist in New York City.
00:20:02.280 --> 00:20:04.560
Gina DiNardo: It's a fun way to spend part of your day.
00:20:04.560 --> 00:20:05.940
Gina DiNardo: It's open to the public.
00:20:05.940 --> 00:20:06.700
Gina DiNardo: That's cool.
00:20:06.740 --> 00:20:08.340
Gina DiNardo: Tuesday through Saturday.
00:20:08.340 --> 00:20:08.880
Gina DiNardo: Yeah.
00:20:08.880 --> 00:20:11.600
Arden Moore: I think next time I go, I'm going to give it a check because I like it.
00:20:11.600 --> 00:20:16.360
Arden Moore: I get my hot dog on the street, and then I'll eat it, come by, and then stop by.
00:20:16.360 --> 00:20:22.520
Gina DiNardo: AKC's offices are on the same building on the fifth floor, which are open for people to tour as well.
00:20:22.520 --> 00:20:23.840
Gina DiNardo: So we can make it a two-fer.
00:20:23.840 --> 00:20:24.680
Arden Moore: That's right.
00:20:24.680 --> 00:20:32.320
Arden Moore: Now, I understand 1956, almost 68 years ago, the five millionth dog was registered.
00:20:32.320 --> 00:20:33.660
Arden Moore: Do you know what I'm talking about?
00:20:33.720 --> 00:20:34.100
Gina DiNardo: Lassie.
00:20:34.120 --> 00:20:36.900
Arden Moore: Yeah, talk about this dog.
00:20:36.900 --> 00:20:41.520
Gina DiNardo: Well, it was the actual, the official Lassie was registered by AKC.
00:20:42.740 --> 00:20:44.480
Gina DiNardo: His dog number five million.
00:20:44.480 --> 00:20:47.100
Arden Moore: He wasn't in the well when he got the news, was he?
00:20:47.100 --> 00:20:47.940
Gina DiNardo: No, no, no.
00:20:47.940 --> 00:20:50.400
Gina DiNardo: But we've registered last famous names.
00:20:50.400 --> 00:20:52.480
Gina DiNardo: We've actually registered a non-living dog.
00:20:52.480 --> 00:21:04.060
Gina DiNardo: We actually registered Snoopy at one point, where Charles Schultz actually submitted a registration certificate for Snoopy, and we created a registration of official for and foreign.
00:21:04.060 --> 00:21:09.280
Gina DiNardo: That's the only non-living dog AKC has ever actually registered, but that's a fun little fact.
00:21:09.280 --> 00:21:09.900
Arden Moore: Oh my gosh.
00:21:09.900 --> 00:21:12.000
Arden Moore: I wonder if, what's his name?
00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:15.060
Arden Moore: Woodstock probably was dancing on top of the dog house, right?
00:21:15.060 --> 00:21:16.060
Arden Moore: With joy.
00:21:16.060 --> 00:21:23.100
Gina DiNardo: Yes, and if you actually go to the museum, there is some stuff about that in the museum to look at, so it's pretty cool.
00:21:23.260 --> 00:21:23.940
Arden Moore: Wow.
00:21:23.940 --> 00:21:31.840
Gina DiNardo: And so our five millionth dog in 1956, and then our 25th million dog in 1981, if you can imagine that.
00:21:31.840 --> 00:21:33.180
Arden Moore: Wow, that's a fast ratio.
00:21:33.180 --> 00:21:34.300
Gina DiNardo: Yeah.
00:21:34.300 --> 00:21:39.200
Gina DiNardo: We were doing like the million, over a million a year, so it just keeps growing and growing.
00:21:39.200 --> 00:21:42.080
Arden Moore: Do you have any idea how many have been registered now?
00:21:42.080 --> 00:21:44.780
Gina DiNardo: Well, if we say a million a year and that was-
00:21:45.380 --> 00:21:46.060
Arden Moore: 81.
00:21:46.060 --> 00:21:46.880
Arden Moore: I would say-
00:21:46.920 --> 00:21:47.280
Gina DiNardo: Wow.
00:21:47.280 --> 00:21:48.640
Gina DiNardo: 81, 91, 01.
00:21:49.140 --> 00:21:52.160
Gina DiNardo: We got to be like 40 billion?
00:21:52.160 --> 00:21:52.500
Gina DiNardo: Yeah.
00:21:52.500 --> 00:21:53.920
Arden Moore: You're getting probably 50 million.
00:21:53.920 --> 00:21:54.380
Arden Moore: Yeah.
00:21:54.380 --> 00:21:55.380
Gina DiNardo: Yeah, maybe.
00:21:55.380 --> 00:21:56.200
Gina DiNardo: Do the math.
00:21:56.200 --> 00:21:57.800
Arden Moore: I'm throwing a lot of things at you.
00:21:57.800 --> 00:21:59.920
Arden Moore: You are a walking encyclopedia.
00:22:00.340 --> 00:22:01.940
Arden Moore: I really do like it.
00:22:01.940 --> 00:22:07.520
Arden Moore: Now, 1974, the first women delegates were admitted.
00:22:07.520 --> 00:22:08.600
Arden Moore: Come on, boys.
00:22:08.600 --> 00:22:09.520
Arden Moore: What were you doing?
00:22:09.520 --> 00:22:10.060
Gina DiNardo: I know.
00:22:10.060 --> 00:22:12.760
Gina DiNardo: Get rid of the program people.
00:22:12.760 --> 00:22:13.400
Arden Moore: Talk about that.
00:22:13.400 --> 00:22:14.320
Arden Moore: That's pretty historic.
00:22:15.240 --> 00:22:15.800
Gina DiNardo: Yes.
00:22:15.800 --> 00:22:23.920
Gina DiNardo: Up until that time, from 1884 to 1973, only men were allowed to be AKC delegates.
00:22:23.920 --> 00:22:25.760
Gina DiNardo: Each member club of AKC.
00:22:25.760 --> 00:22:27.760
Arden Moore: Kind of like the Augusta Golf Tournament.
00:22:27.760 --> 00:22:28.580
Gina DiNardo: Yeah, kind of.
00:22:28.860 --> 00:22:30.900
Gina DiNardo: At least we did it in the 70s.
00:22:30.900 --> 00:22:31.320
Arden Moore: Yes.
00:22:31.320 --> 00:22:32.180
Gina DiNardo: Yes.
00:22:32.180 --> 00:22:38.640
Gina DiNardo: But interesting, I am the first woman executive secretary for the company in all of the history of the years.
00:22:38.640 --> 00:22:39.700
Arden Moore: Wow.
00:22:39.700 --> 00:22:41.140
Arden Moore: Well, we've come a long way.
00:22:41.140 --> 00:22:41.880
Gina DiNardo: Woof.
00:22:41.880 --> 00:22:42.200
Gina DiNardo: Woof.
00:22:42.340 --> 00:22:43.080
Gina DiNardo: Yeah, exactly.
00:22:43.280 --> 00:22:43.920
Gina DiNardo: Thank goodness.
00:22:43.940 --> 00:22:45.840
Arden Moore: You obviously love dogs.
00:22:45.840 --> 00:22:49.640
Arden Moore: The American Kennel Club is historic for all the things.
00:22:49.780 --> 00:22:58.400
Arden Moore: People now need to know you're so multidimensional, and you're appealing to all dogs, the purebreds and as I call them, whereas Dr.
00:22:58.400 --> 00:23:01.800
Arden Moore: Marty Becker calls them canine cocktails, the mutts.
00:23:01.860 --> 00:23:14.380
Gina DiNardo: Yes, we call them all Americans, AKC, and almost all of our programs and our sports are open to both purebreds and mixed breeds, just not our field trials or the confirmation world.
00:23:14.380 --> 00:23:20.620
Gina DiNardo: But there are so many things that you can do with your dog and be in the world of AKC.
00:23:20.620 --> 00:23:32.640
Gina DiNardo: Then if you just want to learn about it, we're saying we mentioned the website, but AKC back in 2018 launched our first over-the-top network, television network called AKC TV.
00:23:32.640 --> 00:23:38.300
Gina DiNardo: And so there's lots of great programming and videos and information about that.
00:23:38.300 --> 00:23:54.660
Gina DiNardo: And with that, we now have a syndicated weekly 30-minute television show called Good Dog TV that you can find on your television stations all around the United States syndicated now in about 120 different cities.
00:23:54.660 --> 00:23:56.820
Gina DiNardo: So check your programming.
00:23:56.820 --> 00:23:58.320
Gina DiNardo: It's called Good Dog TV.
00:23:58.320 --> 00:24:06.160
Gina DiNardo: And it's like a magazine, informational, really fun, just a 30-minute show about AKC and dogs.
00:24:06.160 --> 00:24:07.880
Arden Moore: It's like entertainment tonight with a bark.
00:24:07.880 --> 00:24:09.080
Gina DiNardo: With a bark and a dog.
00:24:09.080 --> 00:24:10.360
Gina DiNardo: Yep, exactly.
00:24:10.360 --> 00:24:12.200
Gina DiNardo: So check out Good Dog TV.
00:24:12.200 --> 00:24:14.020
Arden Moore: So, you know, I'm going to ask you this.
00:24:14.020 --> 00:24:16.000
Arden Moore: We're talking with Gina DiNardo.
00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:18.200
Arden Moore: You could come back as a dog.
00:24:18.200 --> 00:24:19.500
Arden Moore: What breed would it be and why?
00:24:20.020 --> 00:24:23.340
Gina DiNardo: I think I would come back as my first love.
00:24:23.340 --> 00:24:25.660
Gina DiNardo: My first breed is the Doberman Pinscher.
00:24:25.660 --> 00:24:26.820
Gina DiNardo: I would come back as a dog.
00:24:26.820 --> 00:24:29.520
Gina DiNardo: Sleek, elegant, smart.
00:24:32.040 --> 00:24:33.260
Gina DiNardo: Lots of great qualities.
00:24:33.260 --> 00:24:35.620
Gina DiNardo: Dependable, reliable.
00:24:35.800 --> 00:24:38.820
Arden Moore: I think I would come back as a Pembroke Corgi.
00:24:38.820 --> 00:24:39.280
Gina DiNardo: You would?
00:24:39.280 --> 00:24:39.480
Gina DiNardo: Why?
00:24:39.480 --> 00:24:45.520
Arden Moore: Because I think they're a cross between Robin Williams and the Three Stooges, but they're very smart, right?
00:24:45.560 --> 00:24:46.760
Arden Moore: And they got that butt.
00:24:46.760 --> 00:24:47.800
Arden Moore: They got that butt.
00:24:47.800 --> 00:24:50.840
Arden Moore: That wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle butt.
00:24:50.840 --> 00:24:55.600
Arden Moore: So if we ever see each other as Corgi and Dobie, I hope we'll both say hi to one another.
00:24:55.600 --> 00:24:56.280
Gina DiNardo: Absolutely.
00:24:56.280 --> 00:24:57.900
Gina DiNardo: Well, we absolutely will.
00:24:57.900 --> 00:25:00.980
Arden Moore: I really appreciate you being on our show today.
00:25:00.980 --> 00:25:04.300
Arden Moore: We're speaking with Gina DiNardo of the American Kennel Club.
00:25:04.300 --> 00:25:05.960
Arden Moore: Please go to akc.org.
00:25:05.960 --> 00:25:10.800
Arden Moore: You're going to see a whole bunch of cool things that they do for all people who love dogs.
00:25:11.820 --> 00:25:15.340
Arden Moore: This has been one of my most fun episodes, I must confess.
00:25:15.340 --> 00:25:16.860
Arden Moore: Gina, you survived.
00:25:16.860 --> 00:25:18.980
Arden Moore: It wasn't like going to the dentist, hey?
00:25:18.980 --> 00:25:21.620
Gina DiNardo: No, it was a pleasure.
00:25:21.620 --> 00:25:25.960
Arden Moore: At this time also, I want to give a shout out to my producer, Mark Winter.
00:25:25.960 --> 00:25:29.740

00:26:00.600 --> 00:26:04.160
Arden Moore: And we go all over the world by Zoom and in person.
