Meet Animal Shelter Innovator - Dr. Gary Weitzman of the San Diego Humane Society
In this special Oh Behave Show episode, host Arden Moore travels to San Diego to interview one of the country's leading forward-thinking veterinarian: Dr. Gary Weitzman, president of the San Diego Humane Society. And, yes, this is a bit of a reunion as Arden used to live in San Diego County and adopted Pet Safety Cat Casey when he was a kitten from SDHS. Gary Weitzman, DVM, MPH, CAWA, joined San Diego Humane Society as president and CEO in 2012. served as chair of the board of the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and is currently serving as a board member for California Animal Welfare Association (CalAnimals), Shelter Animals Count and Mama’s Kitchen, a San Diego nonprofit committed to providing food for people with chronic illnesses. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he earned a double BA in biology and English from Colby College, a master’s in international public health from Boston University and his DVM from Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Gary was the former co-host of the nationally distributed public radio program “The Animal House,” which ran for seven years, and is the author of eight books published by National Geographic, including “Everything Dogs,” “How to Speak Dog,” “How to Speak Cat,” “The Complete Guide to Pet Health, Behavior and Happiness,” and from National Geographic Kids are “Dog Breed Guide” and “Cat Breed Guide.” His latest books from National Geographic on dog and cat behavior, “Fetch” and “Pounce,” were published in August 2020.
